I met Warren Mitchell in Jersey years ago! He spoke so differently than his portrayal of 'Alf Garnet'. He was a real polite gentleman ! He played Garnet so well, it was hard to believe him as anything different!

Of course Warren Mitchell was a leftie. Friends in real life with PM, "Darlin Harold Wilson". And his "Scouse git" son in law was the father of Cheri Blair, wife of Tony Blair, PM.

Great I agree and lets face it we whites got back as much as we gave. I was never racist in that era wouldn't ever think about it, in fact these woke and Anarchists are mostly white and copycat from America. It's not about colour for me it's how I am treated that matters. ❤

    • @jameswalsh477

The point of the programme, albeit rather clumsily, was to highlight how stupid racism was.
He's so ignorant he doesn't realise if it wasn't for the great soldiers of Pakistan, India, Bangladesh and Burma, Japan would have taken over Asia in WW2. He then gets Indian's and Pakistanis mixed up, all the while presuming he can't understand English.
Always shows the racist to be the fool.

Your response was the closest to ration debate on this webpage, and I agree with such of what you said. As a Black britain, I loved TDUDP, and appreciated the that the mickey was taken out of Alf. However, those on the right, as well as those on the left did not understand the subtlety in the writings, and took Alf as their standard bearer. Also these nuances were lost on the younger generation who had a whole new vocabulary of insults to throw at the likes of me, and hindering race relations. As much as I loved the programme, (although not all the racially charged language,) I would say we have to admire the programme, but recognise, along with Benny Hill, The Black and White Minstrel show, that were of a different time, and reflected different values, celebrating them within their historical context. It is of course right that those shows should not be public broadcast, but those of us that can still relate to them, watch them on websites like this one.

I was with you all the way until you invoked the "PC brigade" argument. PC has no meaning. You I'm sure would not want ISIS, or paedophiles to promote their bile on television, so censorship has, and always will be an important element of public broadcasting. It wasn't that the authorities didn't understand the writer's message, it was that many of the viewers didn't, and it added to their vocabularies words which were then aimed at people of colour. It's unfortunate, but the majority often have to suffer because of a few.

Once upon a time the British public were allowed to make their own minds up and use the "channel change" or "off" button if they didn't like something. Today the PC Thoughtmeisters are in control, which is why "Till Death us do Part", "It Ain't Half Hot, Mum", "Pete and Dud" and many other series will never be shown again on BBC. It's our loss.

The speach has been taken out of context by the media. There is a very good interview on youtube where he explains it in detail. The attitude Britain had of it's self and her citizenship stretched around the world encompassing the empire. It thought of all the dominions as Britain and therefore the people in those countries where British. That is why so many migrated to her shores. He just said that British culture will become eroded away to a point that the indigenous peoples will react. We can not judge history and historical events on the standards of today! Time and tide wait for no man and we will see if Powell's speach serves as a warning from history!

No one was ever offended back then. Now you have to be so PC that everyone is afraid to say anything so as not to ‘offend’ anyone. What a ridiculous society we now live in.

Comedy at its best, I'd like to know who These people are who seem to think it's offensive. Ah , the good days when we were allowed to laugh.

Alf Garnett isn't banned - currently showing on Freeview TV here in UK.......there is a difference between "banned" and "no longer widely shown".

Nah, shouldn't be banned. Alf represents people who lived through 2 world wars, and were understanably scared of change in their own country. Racism, in it's most extreme form, usually means violence, and I've never seen Alf raise his fists to anyone (although I suspect he gave a clump to the odd Millwall supporter in his time).
    UP THE HAMMERS !!!

They should also ban a lot of 21st century 'comedy' such as 'Little Britain', 'The Mighty Boosh' and 'The League Of Gentlemen'. Not to mention Jimmy Carr, dapper Laughs and Russell Brand.

Alf was a funny character. He made a lot of us laugh. People today may well disagree, but unless you lived in that time, you don't know. Interesting that the actor is Jewish.
