Reverse weeding works for adhesive vinyl because of how and when you put the transfer tape on the vinyl. It will not work to weed heat transfer vinyl.

If parts of the vinyl are coming off when you weed them, then either you had a bad cut (not deep enough or wrong blade offset, leaving gaps in the cut) or your vinyl's backing sheet isn't very good (on the first peel, it should be a _lot_ stickier than transfer paper).
This technique might help with the latter (though you should really switch to a different vinyl supplier), but won't to anything to fix the former. If the cut isn't deep enough or if the different segments don't meet, the design will still come off when you weed it, whether it's from the front or the back.
For reference, I have no problem weeding Siser PS Film (a.k.a. Easyweed) even with details as small as 0.5 mm, cut on a Roland plotter (Stika), as long as cut depth and tool offset are correct.

Please share what transfer paper you are using! Mine does NOT stick well at all. When I transfer a design I have to help along each and every single piece to make it stick and it's maddening!

If you are losing pieces on this size cuts (which are not actually that small), your cutting force is way too high.

I use Oracal adhesive vinyl most of the time.
I call that a large print, would like to see you do a monogram for a ring
Or a teeny tiny nose or eyebrow
Use a sewing needle to weed out the bits.. so much easier
If you heat press this wouldn't the glue from the transfer tape stick to the gourmet??
Heat transfer vinyl & adhesive vinyl are completely different
What vinyl is this I used siser and not worked. Can you do smaller lettering it’s still large the font you are using
You only want to reverse week with adhesive vinyl. I use Oracal vinyl. The font I'm using is pretty small - look at the periods :)

I have tried this technique but the vinyl doesn't seem to stick to the transfer tape when reverse weeding...the design just comes off with the vinyl is this because the design is not cut deep enough...or am I weeding incorrectly? Im new to the whole process....thanks.

What kind of transfer tape do you use? Several people have asked... I didn’t see any answers. Seems to be a common problem when weeding... because my transfer tape is not as sticky as yours. Or I have the other extreme and its way too sticky. Please tell us.... we beg of you. HaHa
The Cricut tape is perfect - but ugly.

No you can not reverse week with HTV.
