  • After his successful album “Mendelssohn”, the Canadian pianist now dedicates his recent album to the five Piano Concertos by Ludwig van Beethoven - once again in the double role as soloist and conductor, accompanied by the Academy of St Martin in the Fields.
Jan Lisiecki believes that “Beethoven certainly did not conceive the 5 concertos as a cycle. In spite of this, they belong together because they reveal such a differentiated picture of Beethoven, starting with the Piano Concertos No. 1 and 2”, which still disclose the legacy of Mozart, the very different works No. 3 and 4 up to the majestic Piano Concerto No. 5 in E flat major.

I heard this young man on the radio today perform Beethoven’s 5th Piano Concerto and was blown away. I have not been this pleasantly shocked since I heard Augustin Hadelich on the radio about 15 years ago. I thought I was hearing Emil Gilels play, but then I heard the audience explode in applause and immediately knew it couldn’t be him. Jan Lisiecki is now my favorite pianist and look forward to hearing him play the Rachmaninoff Concertos. I hope he comes to St Petersburg to play with The Florida Orchestra someday!

Amazing how he has changed since I saw him when he was 13 years old boy from Calgary. His intelligence formed him a fine and fine looking young man as he ages.

I've played most passages of all the Beethoven piano concertos. Agree w/ his remarks about the 3rd. Can't say I agree about the 5th, which I think is even more "out there" than the 4th.
The 4th is downright weird/frustrating; specifically 1rst movement: in some respects it's simple, in other respects - especially the long-range overall interpretation & polish - it's very challenging (I can't say I've mastered it yet). Ironically, it has about the simplest development of any of his P.C. first movements (along w/ #1). But aside from its playing mechanics, the 4th is indeed a treasure to listen to - I'd have to say the loveliest of all his P.C. works.

Зачем же так бежать. Достаточно играть ритмично в жанре танца.
