- In what would have been a disturbing turn of events, James Cameron actually met with another famous name before casting Arnold Schwarznegger as what is now one of the most iconic film roles, The Terminator. Before retiring from American Football and the alleged murders, it turns out O J Simpson was actually considered to play The Terminator due to his size and physique, however, director James Cameron gave the role to Arnold because he felt O J was “too nice” to be believable as a killing machine. Before both were considered, it almost had Lance Henriksen as the Terminator and Arnold as Kyle Reese.
I saw that too! Lance would have been a kind of preemptive T1000 I suppose.
Lance would have been awesome! He would have been a more practical choice. The T-800 model 101 is supposed to be an infiltrator, meant to blend into a crowd. If you see Lance Henrikson, he looks like an average human being. You look at Arnold Schwarzenegger, he looks superhuman - he does not blend in at all. Nothing about him his typical. In the future of the Terminator time-line, after the nuclear war, all humans are malnourished and sickly. It's a struggle to stay alive from day to day and the bodies of the humans reflect this. Terminator 1 showed this well. Kyle Reese was probably the best example of what the best state of health could be achieved in the future. Whereas Arnold Schwarzenegger's physique would be impossible to achieve in the harsh future conditions.
From a dramatic standpoint, Arnold's physique and screen presence helps reinforce the idea of power and fear, of something unstoppable. For dramatic purposes, Arnold works better.

Arnold also completely earned the role, i remember hearing in an interview that he was originally being considered for Kyle Reese but he came to Cameron with so many ideas on how the terminator should be played (i.e. how a robot should walk, talk, never be seen breathing, etc) that Cameron just gave him the role

I’ve read Arnies book, and he said OJ was supposed to be the Terminator and Arnie was to play Kyle Reece, but when he was talking to James Cameron over dinner about how OJ should move his body and head and how he should speak, James just said hey why don’t you just do it?
And so history was made into pop culture thanks to that change of mind. 😎

They also considered Lance Hendrickson. James Cameron spoke with Arnold at a party about The Terminator. Arnold said a robot wouldnt blink when shooting a gun, James liked that imput and decided he was perfect for the role.

I can't remember where I heard it but wasn't Lance Henriksen considered as well. Because the original idea was to have the terminator able to easily move through crowds and not stick out.

Well this decision to not use him aged well. No, I say this unironically. What hasn't aged well is his comment about why. It's especially ironic as OJ basically proved to be good at blending in when he apparently had the heart of a killer - qualities that would have made him an excellent Infiltrator T-800 in reality.
