    I just want to correct one thing, the roots style was used in Detroit diesel engines because they were 2 strokes and didn’t have an intake cycle, so no vacuum to intake air. Instead after the exhaust valves on top opened the port at the bottom where open by the piston, that’s when the roots blower would do it’s job of scavenging the last of the exhaust by forcing fresh air in its place. Later when they introduced turbos to the equation they learned the blower itself was a restriction as it didn’t create any pressure just move air, so they added a bypass valve to bypass the supercharger when the turbo was building enough pressure and flow to scavenge and supercharge the engine .

      I personally hated the supercharged/turbo charged Detroit used by the military. The CAT I6 turbo that replaced it was such a better experience in both operation and maintenance. Turbos also can run a much higher pressure ratio efficiently as well. Good catch on the info.

      @@user-cq6fk5go3syep! I loathe a 2 stroke Detroit. The most efficient engine ever made at turning diesel fuel into noise, black smoke and nothing else.

      @@user-cq6fk5go3s I spend many hours behind 7 tons. I’m sure glad I got to experience the CAT C15 noises and not the Detroit. Also the LAV-25 still uses 2 stroke detroits. I think it’s the 6v53, and they’re slow as f*ck

    I put on a used 64 mm Precision turbo on my Honda prelude with H22a my best dyno run 407 whp. It's been pretty reliable past 4 years. I bought used rods pistons that were in great shape. The springs and retainers I bought new. I am happy with the car.

I have a 2005 Ford Excursion with the 6.0l Powerstroke, and would love to see upgrades for that engine, or even just basic troubleshooting for things like reduced power, without having to spend a ton of money on a diagnostic machine!

    I sure would like to see you guys able to take another 1970s inline 6 cylinder that is a 300 cubic inch and bore it out to 312 and adding, 2 Cobra Jets carburetors on it and see how much Hores power will be able to do. If something like that is able to be done. And keep it old, Skool style. Because I have grown up during the early days of the 60s and throughout my life in 70s era's and 80s. Because of that, we didn't have any other options as well as where for today. So love the old Skool type of engines.

    Turbo good for most power. Supercharger for quick response and no lag to keep up the boost. Turbos can use antilag to keep boost built up but at risk of higher Mechanical wear.

    2 stroke diesels don't self scavenge, so a blower on them is needed to make them really run at all. A 6V71 (or whatever) is considered NA if it only has the factory Roots blower, it gets a T with a turbo and A for charge cooling

    If I was rich, I would definitely want to build a big block with a roots blower. If I had a cheap car i wanted to drag race occasionally, and it wouldn't ruin me if I blew it up. I would do a turbo setup. But neither of those pertain to me. So if I ever get the inspiration to boost something. I'll probably just go with a regular belt driven supercharger for it's simplicity. But most likely I'll just stick with naturally aspirated engines.

    SO IN GENERAL, turbos and centrifugal SC benefit from high rearend ratio and or higher stall convertor to keep engine higher up in Rpm band where Hp N Tq really start building?
    Roots type blowers make instant TQ so dont need as much rear gear or stall?
    if correct those factors need to be taken into account overal for build specs and extra costs
    not to mention special camshafts

      Supercharger. It takes 100+ HP to spin it. That means the engine is under a higher load

    The roots style blowers on Detroit diesels were just that, blowers. They were not used as a supercharger or a power adder. A two cycle diesel engine will not run without air being blown in by a blower.

    Can you test those intercooler coolers? Co2 spray on front of an intercooler and I saw a video on social media there was a nozzle spraying something in the turbo inlet. What is that?

  • @bmstylee
    @bmstylee 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Wouldn't mind adding some boost because the Chevy 5.3L can handle it. The 6L80.....not as much. You can add a bit of power but it's not exactly the toughest transmission out there.

  • @freedomfighter5095
    @freedomfighter5095 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Don’t forget about turbine drive pressure! If you have 20PSI of exhaust pressure driving the turbine then you have 20PSI acting back on the piston and this takes power from the crank as well! No such thing as a free lunch right @GaleBanks!

  • @georgelookas4694
    @georgelookas4694 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    The two stroke detroits needed it to run at all. With out a blower it will not run. That’s a natural aspirated two stroke Detroit, if you wanted it turbo charged you need and intercooler under the blower and a turbo on top of the blower.

    Superchargers exist for applications where turbos don’t don’t package well. Otherwise a turbo is superior in my opinion.

    Why never a performance 4 cylinder?.. It's been proven that they can make power and be badass...
    You'd take and make 500-600 hp building a v8 and you can do it with a 4 cylinder too..but you don't.. v8 is easier but it isn't necessarily ha4d to make comparable power with half the cylinders and a DOHC setup.. and...more people are building 4 bangers these days that it wouldn't be and un-relateable build...
