  • This video outlines the changes I made to the LEGO Dragon Dance set (80102) to make the motion of the dragon flow more smoothly. Also a rudimentary guide to hiring good dragon dancers. :)
    Building instructions for the modification can be found on my website:

    Build a longer one out of two sets. Get a complete wave back.

    • @tyrant351
      @tyrant351 5 ปีที่แล้ว +47

      better-- scale the amplitude of the wave up too, get that serious animated undulation going.

    • @technicallypossible
      @technicallypossible 5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      You could use pulleys (part 4185) alternately offset by 90 degrees and you'd get 12 positions around one rotation as well as a higher amplitude, OR don't offset the pulleys and have 2 waves with 6 positions per wave... The model would have to be 12 dragon segments long though

    This is hilarious and amazing because the idea that ninjas wear all black comes from kabuki theater. Audiences were trained to ignore people in all black with their faces covered because those weren’t characters in the story they were puppeteers/special effects for generations. When one of them suddenly joined the story and attacked it seemed to audiences like he’d just popped out of thin air.
    So by having ninjago puppet the dragon you’ve brought them full circle!

    I think the point is that the minifigs are creating the motion by jumping, not slowly levitating up and down. But it's still a really cool modification and mini engineering lesson that can definitely be used in other Lego creations!

    Excellent Work again!! I've a tron set with your modification and love it. this is now also on my list :D
    I'll never understand why Lego don't give all fans a chance to get the set but ok making yourself scarce will certainly increase your turnover..not. since i'm interested in lego again, it's also noticeable that some things that would sell really well, such as things from the comic con, on ships, in shops or here countries etc. have such an exclusivity that without the internet you would probably never know that they exist at all and the short life of many sets where you never want to look back anyway cause it hurts.

    Stumbled on this very late on the game after building a version of the kit using several mods due to part limitations on my end. I am familiar with some of your other work and this is impressive as always. I enjoyed your detailed discussion of the physics and math behind the effect you were going for. I have to say that my biggest issue with the set is the small overall vertical travel. Perhaps I’ll remedy that! Thx for the inspiration.

    One thing I would guess is that since the set has to be able to be built by young kids who may have no background or interest in mechanical engineering (The set's recommended age range is 9+), the mechanics have to be simple to understand despite it being clunky. Your model looks super smooth and really nice, but perhaps the complexity of something like that may be too much for a young child.
    Of course, any LEGO fan should feel free to make any changes they like to suit their preference, and I'd say it should even be encouraged. I like to think that LEGO sets that are simple like this are just the starting point for fans to build off of it. If LEGO made your complex version as a set, then we wouldn't have inspiring LEGO Fans like you to express creativity in going further than the instructions.

    • @JKBrickworks
      @JKBrickworks  5 ปีที่แล้ว +43

      Absolutely, I don't begrudge LEGO for designing it this way. The original is easy to build, solid and performs very reliably. I'm sure those were all factors in the design. Thankfully, I do not have to operate under such restrictions. :) One thing I hope to encourage by making these videos is for people to think outside the box. Just because the instructions tell you to build a set a certain way doesn't mean you actually have to. That's what LEGO is all about!

    • @joshc19991
      @joshc19991 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I disagree because a 9 year old building it may not care about the motion as much as such not putting the axels on that 45 degree tilt. I think it would have been smarter to do it this way and allow the builder to decide how they want it. Lets be honest here if somone cared enough about it they would do it themselves so at least that way youre giving people a choice. With that alone in peoples reviews it would sell like hotcakes

      When i was about nine, i did my first solderings....so please don´t say "...kids may be have no...." they do have..usually when i show kids how to solder a simple blinking circuit together with thier own hands they always are super happy....if something moves, blinks or making noise kids are always interested...;) :) kids really makes the world turn, if you only let them try ;)
