  • Looking at my two types of buccochromis today. It's funny that at first I worried I wouldn't be able to tell the two species apart. I have three buccochromis rhodesii and two buccochromis nototaenia. I should not have worried. As juveniles, they were impossible for me to tell apart. Now, grown up a bit, they look quite different. The noto's have a much more pointed head, while the rhodesii have a very blunt head.
I had the noto's in another 210 gallon with younger fish, but when the big male started eating his tankmates, I added them to my other 210 where the three rhodesii were. I hoped they would help cut down the number of yellow tail acei fry that keep popping up. No luck so far trimming down, but I still have hope for subsequent batches of fry. Likewise the golden saum have had three batches of fry so far, which have been nicely consumed after a few days of being guarded.
The larger nototaenia is getting his color, but the others show very little. Other than the one noto male, I'm not certain of the sex of the rest.
