Painting Realism: The Power of Value

Color, meaning hue, is not that important, But it is the observance of VALUE that makes for a good painting. Value is, how dark or light a color is.
It is when dark color transitions to light color that you see the form of an object. The values don't have to be matched exactly, as long as their is value separation in the mixed paint you will have a realistic looking object.

So the best way to practice this concept is to
1) Choose a single colored still life object
2) Create 3 piles of colors - Dark Value, Middle Value and light Value (You can further subdivide and tweak as you go)
3) Place the colors going from Dark Value to Light Value, don't worry about the border of the values that much. Blend the borders, but don't over do it, where it is ultra smooth.
4) Put the colors down boldly, don't pick on it or be careful, unless until the end.

COLOR MIXTURES:-
Pepper Mixtures: (Use your judgment to get the mixture right)
Dark Value: Ultramarine Blue, Light Yellow Lemon, Burnt Sienna
Middle Value: Viridian Green, Light Yellow Lemon
Lightest Value: Viridian Green, Light Yellow Lemon, Titanium White
Background Mixtures:
Light Value: Titanium White, Portland Gray Deep (Gamblin)
Middle Value: Same as above but mor Gray.
Shadow of pepper: Tit. White, Portland Gray Deep and Blue
