I think every bin man can relate to that with people parking on or too close to junctions. I remember one particular road where the residents hadn’t had their general bins emptied in over a month because of the same van and car being left blocking the end of a junction on the other side of the road, the only way to get to the bins was to reverse all the way down a very long alleyway and said vehicles made that reverse swing impossible. I remember inadvertently wasting a few bins when we finally got down there as they were so heavy that two fell in the hopper and one split in half hitting the top bar.
@@wheelerd02 I remember one time where we had to drag all the bins from a difficult alleyway due to this and one of the bins split like that, it was on the lifter right next to the offending car as well, showering it with horrible, foul smelling bin juices. I couldn’t stop laughing, poetic justice!

33 years driving these...now only work 2 days a week driving it..although on Trade Waste now. Originally in 1989 had 4 loaders on black bags then eventually went down to 2 loaders on wheelie bins. Driving a merc 70/30 split like at the moment but with the Zoller? lifts, can't beat the Terbergs though. Got to have the patience of a saint I've realised over the years or you could quite literally fall out with someone every half hour.
Good to see how your trucks work I live in Australia our trucks are a single side loader hydrologic powered only requires the driver picks the bin with a hydrologic arm controlled by a joy stick in the cab and my council operates 1 Dennis Eagle truck

My grandad use to be a dust man for a company down In west sussex and he has been doing it for years and before that he was in the fire bridge but on the dust and he was on the garden bins he loved the job like you guys and he has so many good mates on there as well
There is a good and varied bunch of characters on the bins Fire Brigade is a very hazardous job I imagine but truly a live saving profession. I always try to nod or wave whenever I see an "appliance"
You should get someone to change those screws on top of the green bin for dowels so the bags slide off easier when you remove them. Will make unloading smoother and not as harsh on the wrists.
We use 21 plate Dennis Eagle Elite's (Rear Steer, 26 tonners) in Dumfries & Galloway, but they're dual lifter not a triple, and every single house has bins, no bags, bi weekly general, monthly Cardboard&Paper, monthly plastics. (General Week 1 / CB Week 2 / General Week 3 / Plastic Week 4) Lads are basically out walking every single bin, Drivers usually just stay in their seat since the lorry is only moving forward 15-20 feet every 30 seconds lol, Unless we're in a bigger dead end cul-de-sac and the folk are kind enough to pile all the bins up there, gives the driver a chance to get out and help and stretch their legs, it's very monotonous sitting there all day watching the camera to make sure everything is okay to move forward again. 34 M, Driving RCV's for 2 years, loaded them for about 8 years before that. Illegally parked cars are literally the bane of our job, making it way more difficult than it should be.
Thanks for watching 👋 🏴 Couldn't agree more with what you said my guy. As shown in my videos I am very hands on and helped the loaders whenever practical. Bins, bags & boxes down in Chelmsford. Double lift black bin motors, dual lift recycling, side lift glass & cans. 33 M.
With the buzzing while u reversing our problem in our truck is the lifts won't go up when reversing straight away so if u put it back into neutral then in reverse again before u move the lifts should go up that should stop the buzzing
Mate, I have been watching and it has been refreshing to watch a fellow steering wheel attendant say it as it is - took my mind off loads of crap. Put a smile on face. Nice
Many others have said otherwise "These bins are on the vehicle when we arrive in the morning, 3×360l Green bins raised fully on the lift into the hopper. The loaders walk around emptying paper sacks into the bin and hang plastic waste on the screws around the rim. This is done to keep the work flowing and reduces the frequency of bin tipping. If we didn't hang the plastic recycling sacks on the side, every sack would need to be thrown into the back before moving onto the next house. This procedure is sanctioned and acted upon by instruction, by no means does the general waste get collected in this manner."
13:16 As a bus driver myself, see this all the time, got to get in front of that bus, in your case bin lorry. Got to get past that bus / bin lorry as quick as possible, not planning how to get round esc
Looking at the end of their bonnet, maybe 1 car length ahead Drives me nuts when 1 car overtakes too fast then 2,3,4 more follow despite not knowing what lies ahead
At 39:00 you were turning right and a car behind was going to overtake you . I had the same in a dustcart waiting to turn right but couldn't because of parked cars and traffic coming out , a woman tried to overtake but met an emerging car from the junction. An impasse occurred , nobody could move anywhere and cars started to build up behind both vehicles. Horns were sounded , as if this would make an improvement 😂😂 some people don't look passed the end of their bonnet.
I went on take out return in 2016 to get my bins collected but half the time they were getting missed. I got so fed up I got my local councillor involved now they don’t get missed at all so I’m happy Mate. 👍
@brummyuk I couldn't have put it better myself. I'd caution people self funding their own training and do lots of research first. It isn't driving around arm on the window sill getting a tan, listening to BBC R2, cups of tea and forklifts all day. @@noooo_safechat2589 Waste management s extrememly dfferent among all 50 states. Every cities collection varies. It's so complicated that i don't know everything. A lot of private companies plus public. This COVID thing is not helping whatsoever with workers getting sick everyday and the garbage is everywhere.
Loving your videos. Cannot wait to see you on food waste and glass/can collections. I find the conversation insightful and interesting. Keep up the good work. :-)
Bins are not like this near me in Liverpool. They have to be left out with no bags anywhere. If we hang a bag on the wheelie bin they wont even take them. If the bins are slightly in your drive they wont take them.
Interesting the bin placement is an issue, we _ask_ they are kerbside but that has a wide interpretation throughout our working area. Anything beyond a meter or so within property is deemed "not out" in our eyes. If we damage anything or injure ourselves _apparently_ company insurance won't cover you as it is private property
We at council placed the screws on to help load more plastic sacks throughout the run without stopping. There is no limit to the recycling that a resident can put out. General waste however is in wheelie bin only with lid shut and no extras. Some crews are more accommodating than others
@@wheelerd02 Well...south Ayrshire limits you to a single bin for recycling and another for paper. Extra bags aren't taken. Same with refuse bin. If the bin is overflowing they don't take it and will charge you if you ask to come back and pick it up.
I always give the bin men £20 at Xmas. I once worked for Biffa and I know only to well what they go through. Cars parked in ridiculous places and why do some have drives to park on but don't? I admire these guys and many never even think about the work these men have to do. Having said that I have seen on the odd occasion some women doing this job as well and just as good. Well done ladies proving true Equality there. Admiration from me all the time you guys. Take Care all of you.👍
As an ex-Work Study person (Hiss, boo) , I'd say you more than earned your wedge. Mr productivity. And the running commentary, superb. i imagine you keep pretty trim, fitness wise
Complimentary thank you. The job certainly keeps you moving and I am driving the thing. The loaders are outside for many hours dashing and darting about. A vastly under appreciated lot
If we hanged bags like that on the side of our bins in my part of North London our bin men would leave the bin and wouldn't empty it sometimes they don't even empty them if lid on the bins arnt shut properly.
Council instructions for recycling crews to operate like this. General waste, no extra waste would get left. Not to say the full bin would be left, that's silly.
@@NUBBY39 that is not good to hear, they are paid to empty the bins. Not an unreasonable request, leave extra waste I can understand but still empty the bins at least
This is so weird to me. I’m used to Australia where the driver never gets out of the truck. An arm just comes out to grab the bin it empty’s and puts it back drives off to the next one
Astounded how much stuff you accept. In my area if the bin lid isn't closed fully down it doesn't get taken. Absolutely no loose plastic bin bags are taken. And the driver doesn't get out. And if the wrong stuff is out it doesn't get taken. Put cardboard in land fill, nothing goes.
In Germany the driver is the sole person working, if you don't place your bin correctly at the side of the st. Then it don't get emptied. He sits in the van drives up the side grabs the bin is emptied automatically.. Bin midst be placed correctly facing forward.. ✌️🇬🇧
@@wheelerd02 watched the rest and can conclude another excellent video mate well in, love the dog at the end too. maybe that 15plate is due to be replaced end of this year or next with typical 7-8 year life expectacy?
New to the channel, only watched 8 minutes of it and I'm loving it, very insightful. Didn't think id be so intrigued into driving a bin wagon to be fair. You've gained a subscriber
Am i right in thinking those green bin with the screws around the top are something you guys have come up with to round up all the bags and the cardboard in one go?
Been a bin man for over 23 years one of my big bug bearers is when you’re reversing into a cul-de-sac everyone wants to come out just as you’re getting near the top
The Chelmsford refuse philosopher, big thumbs up, found you by accident, love your sunny warm attitude, you guys do a great job, it looks reasonably cushy on a nice day, but, how many would want your job in a thunder storm or heavy rain? Fabulous video, all the best to you and yours, thanks for the video.
Mad type of rubbish collection there. Are those big green bins communal? Then bags left out at the houses? In Glasgow we have 4 different bins now, rubbish collected every 3 weeks, garden/food 2 weeks, paper & plastics 4 weekly 🙃 ** got it now; the green bins are yours, paper in sacks at side of the road 😁

What a hard way of working here in Copenhagen denmark we use 1 truck for paper 1 for plastic 1for cardboard 1 for household waste 1 for metal and 1for green household waste.
Know exactly how you feel about cats was school coach driver through 4 villages every day somebody parked in the way just used to sit there with horn blaring at 730 am till they come out
Had a few years on the trucks, always made harder when you spend most of the time thinking for everyone else around you, even worse now cos of the hood up headphone in mentality. Keep it the good work mate.
Loved the video! I think your reversing noise issue could possibly be because the lifts are on travel mode (someone's pressed the black button at the top of the button panel), so the truck thinks you’ve forgotten about the bins attached to them. If the lifts are on auto or even just being manually buttoned up and down like they were yesterday it should ideally solve the problem mate, hope that helps 👍
One more comment from me. According to Fife Council you can recycle ♻️ plastic bag’s when I don’t know if you can to be honest. So if the beautiful Oceans 🌊 get clogged up with plastic bags blame Fife Council . Plus they want us to put the empty juice cartons out to the plastics greenbin because they have a bit of plastic in the carton Same with Amazon boxes 📦 which I put in either bin greenbin for plastics & tin’s while the the black bins you put your paper & cardboard in Mate. 👍
@@rossmcgarrie9787 Tetra Pak is 99% paper it's ridicilus that they tell you to put them with plastics 😅😅😅🤣🤣 where i live they accept them in Paper and amazone boxes have 0% plastic do they count the printing as plastic or something ? 🤣🤣🤣😅😅
Mate! You need more staff. And your punters(haha) need more tubs. Raise the bin fully on manual before you reverse then its clamped and the noise might go off too.
Perhaps D Of T could ammend the Highway Code and detail a special procedure for cars passing public service vehicles at work. Bit of ommission really . . As DOT seem to be very good at responding to the demands of other vested (Two wheel) interests.
Bin loaders are pedestrians and should be accorded the same distances and courtesy This does not happen, we are a burden and an obstacle to the commuter
Astounded how much stuff you accept. In my area if the bin lid isn't closed fully down it doesn't get taken. Absolutely no loose plastic bin bags are taken. And the driver doesn't get out.
Drivers are loaders too in their job role here. If we refused lids up very little would get taken. Open a few inches? Okay. Open fully with sacks piled on top is pushing it abit when you see all the neighbours have managed without doing that. The loose plastic sacks are recycling amd it's the only way it can be taken. If it was general waste then no, they cannot expect it to be taken. Some crews are more accommodating than others.
Hey can you show us in a video what you do with all the waste like where does it go and does the truck unload the waste Like walking floor or hydraulic ram

6:53 I think those Tetra-pak cartons are made with several layers of plastic as well as the cardboard as they are usually listed on the list for plastic for recycling.
They go in the plastic sack in chelmsford
@@suffolkessexrefusecollecti3607 aye though so it's just he a comment about putting cardboard in with plastic as he picked it uk
The carton itself just said "Check local kerbside recycling" and didn't specify it's material
I have been humbled and learned something new today
Afternoon my garbage friends love and like the videos that you do on your channel I used to be a binman loader myself years ago for serco though agency love the footage and opportunities to say great job that you and your crew do greetings from Denmead in Hampshire in the UK love the way you talk through the video of yours many thanks for letting me join your channel merry Christmas and a great wounderful new year too

My grandad use to be a dust man for a company down In west sussex and he has been doing it for years and before that he was in the fire bridge but on the dust and he was on the garden bins he loved the job like you guys and he has so many good mates on there as well
There is a good and varied bunch of characters on the bins

Just asking how often are recycable collected ? Is it a daily collection or a twice or thrice week collection
Once fortnightly, alternating week collections.
Card & Glass
Plastic & Paper
You should get someone to change those screws on top of the green bin for dowels so the bags slide off easier when you remove them. Will make unloading smoother and not as harsh on the wrists.
Wow this is far more difficult than I envisaged. Massive respect!
Thank you, isn't for thr fainted hearted or work shy
We use 21 plate Dennis Eagle Elite's (Rear Steer, 26 tonners) in Dumfries & Galloway, but they're dual lifter not a triple, and every single house has bins, no bags, bi weekly general, monthly Cardboard&Paper, monthly plastics. (General Week 1 / CB Week 2 / General Week 3 / Plastic Week 4)
Lads are basically out walking every single bin, Drivers usually just stay in their seat since the lorry is only moving forward 15-20 feet every 30 seconds lol, Unless we're in a bigger dead end cul-de-sac and the folk are kind enough to pile all the bins up there, gives the driver a chance to get out and help and stretch their legs, it's very monotonous sitting there all day watching the camera to make sure everything is okay to move forward again.
34 M, Driving RCV's for 2 years, loaded them for about 8 years before that.
Illegally parked cars are literally the bane of our job, making it way more difficult than it should be.
Thanks for watching 👋 🏴
Couldn't agree more with what you said my guy. As shown in my videos I am very hands on and helped the loaders whenever practical.
Bins, bags & boxes down in Chelmsford. Double lift black bin motors, dual lift recycling, side lift glass & cans.

With the buzzing while u reversing our problem in our truck is the lifts won't go up when reversing straight away so if u put it back into neutral then in reverse again before u move the lifts should go up that should stop the buzzing
This was the only vehicle out of 15+ I drove that did it
Different world that we don't normally see- looking at it from a car driver / passenger point of view ! Well done guys.. keep it up :)

Glad you enjoyed and thank you for watching
It isn't enough you spend all day doing it but now you watch my brand of nonsense. You are to be commended
Great video as always buddy it’s amazing how you bring so much positive energy to your videos and your team around you 👍
That bin idea with the screws is a revolution
Many others have said otherwise
"These bins are on the vehicle when we arrive in the morning, 3×360l Green bins raised fully on the lift into the hopper.

Looking at the end of their bonnet, maybe 1 car length ahead
Drives me nuts when 1 car overtakes too fast then 2,3,4 more follow despite not knowing what lies ahead
If not beyond the end of their bonnet then certainly not beyond their phone screens which await the feverish attentions of a impatient driver
I went on take out return in 2016 to get my bins collected but half the time they were getting missed. I got so fed up I got my local councillor involved now they don’t get missed at all so I’m happy Mate. 👍
1:01:25 That's incorrect now. You can go straight to class 1 as per the changes brought in earlier this year
I stand corrected, indeed you are correct
The test for driving and reversing are very seperate as well now no?
@brummyuk a good friend and I have discussed this.
I am staggered how they've streamlined and reduced the testing process
@brummyuk I couldn't have put it better myself.
I'd caution people self funding their own training and do lots of research first. It isn't driving around arm on the window sill getting a tan, listening to BBC R2, cups of tea and forklifts all day.
There is a lot of hard, dirty, hazardous work out there, doing all the hours in naff motors.
Judging by your remarks you must be a HGV Driver too. Thank you taking the time to comment.

Our binmen won't lift a bin if the lid isn't shut let alone one with twenty bags of crap on screws around the top.

@@wheelerd02 I'm not lying I don't know where the bin men in this video are our bin men are lazy gits in my area anything to get out of doing anything
@@NUBBY39 that is not good to hear, they are paid to empty the bins. Not an unreasonable request, leave extra waste I can understand but still empty the bins at least
Great video, you got recommended to me on youtube, you make driving a bin lorry so easy lol. Love your attitude, great youtuber
Thank you for your kind words
This is so weird to me. I’m used to Australia where the driver never gets out of the truck. An arm just comes out to grab the bin it empty’s and puts it back drives off to the next one
Would be simpler but our streets aren't laid out in a convenient manner, plus with on street/pavement parking it would never work
Astounded how much stuff you accept. In my area if the bin lid isn't closed fully down it doesn't get taken. Absolutely no loose plastic bin bags are taken. And the driver doesn't get out. And if the wrong stuff is out it doesn't get taken. Put cardboard in land fill, nothing goes.
Most crews are quite accommodating, unless it's a really hectic pile of mess
You guys are so fucking under appreciated it's criminal.
Thank you for the appreciation, to waste collectors everywhere
In Germany the driver is the sole person working, if you don't place your bin correctly at the side of the st. Then it don't get emptied. He sits in the van drives up the side grabs the bin is emptied automatically.. Bin midst be placed correctly facing forward.. ✌️🇬🇧

Been a bin man for over 23 years one of my big bug bearers is when you’re reversing into a cul-de-sac everyone wants to come out just as you’re getting near the top
A common occurrence
Big, white, noisy with many lights but now is the time to reverse out the driveway and near miss my loaders

Thank you for the kind words and your viewing.
Rain and wind make it decidedly unpleasant proposition. On nice days life is well, one bin at a time.

Try it, you may disagree.
It does have it's moments
What a hard way of working here in Copenhagen denmark we use 1 truck for paper 1 for plastic 1for cardboard 1 for household waste 1 for metal and 1for green household waste.
Continental Europe is much more logical than the UK in various things
(Source: various city breaks and holidays)
Why doesnt your council mix paper and plastics? In Edinburgh/Lothians all dry recycling can be mixed except glass.
Money is suspect, less loses if we seperate rather than the sorting centre

Less than 2 mins in and you’ve smashed it I love the video already.. definitely subscribing for more of this!!!
Is that one houses rubbish hanging off the bins in plastic bags? Genuinely never seen that anywhere before.
Plastic recycling sacks, paper goes in the bin, sacks hang on the side. Enables the loaders to do more houses before emptying

Had a few years on the trucks, always made harder when you spend most of the time thinking for everyone else around you, even worse now cos of the hood up headphone in mentality. Keep it the good work mate.
Thank you for watching
Loved the video! I think your reversing noise issue could possibly be because the lifts are on travel mode (someone's pressed the black button at the top of the button panel), so the truck thinks you’ve forgotten about the bins attached to them. If the lifts are on auto or even just being manually buttoned up and down like they were yesterday it should ideally solve the problem mate, hope that helps 👍
I was just thinking that
Buttons, engine on and off, no improvement
No other lorry offers this many problems
Hell great da free video love real nice
One more comment from me. According to Fife Council you can recycle ♻️ plastic bag’s when I don’t know if you can to be honest. So if the beautiful Oceans 🌊 get clogged up with plastic bags blame Fife Council . Plus they want us to put the empty juice cartons out to the plastics greenbin because they have a bit of plastic in the carton Same with Amazon boxes 📦 which I put in either bin greenbin for plastics & tin’s while the the black bins you put your paper & cardboard in Mate. 👍

It's Faun Zoeller/ Merc lorries I work on what is the Terberg lorries like mate.
They work well enough, I haven't operated any other bin lift equipped vehicles. Straight forward to use, pretty reliable and minimal fuss.
Mate! You need more staff. And your punters(haha) need more tubs. Raise the bin fully on manual before you reverse then its clamped and the noise might go off too.
That vehicle would do it whatever the lift situation. No others in fleet do it as often.
More staff? No kidding

Perhaps D Of T could ammend the Highway Code and detail a special procedure for cars passing public service vehicles at work. Bit of ommission really . . As DOT seem to be very good at responding to the demands of other vested (Two wheel) interests.
Bin loaders are pedestrians and should be accorded the same distances and courtesy
This does not happen, we are a burden and an obstacle to the commuter
Hydraulic Ram on these vehicles
Your voice and way of talking reminds me of Russell Kane a bit. Also nice to see you picking up the random bits that fall out I don't think all do.
Can you explain the strategy behind plastic bags hung around the recycling bin? Seems to defeat the point of a bin.
These bins are on the vehicle when we arrive in the morning, 3×360l Green bins raised fully on the lift into the hopper.
The loaders walk around emptying paper sacks into the bin and hang plastic waste on the screws around the rim. This is done to keep the work flowing and reduces the frequency of bin tipping.
