honestly, this is my favorite bass line of all time - so beautiful and melodic, and really compliments the song throughout all its three parts. simple or not, they don't make'em like this anymore.
beautiful example of how bass is the hardest instrument (takes the most inventiveness). Thank God for the people willing to undertake this daunting task. Beautiful, baby!
Christine McVie wrote a real gem with this song, it's one of her biggest hits in fact. But I think it's pretty widely recognized that John's bass line pretty much drives the song from beginning to end. I think you're right too, it may be the busiest song for the veteran bass player, and he's been performing it for over 3 decades.
Not that Im a hardcore Fleetwood-Mac fan, but I seem to favor the Christine McVie penned songs for some reason. Maybe John put a little something extra into those.
Got to admit, those gliss's in the song are what is memorable about the melody and the song itself. It may be a simple bass line/playing, but it absolutely carries the song and makes it special.
I really enjoyed this one a lot, Troy. I've always liked this song, and it's true that it is one of Mr. McVie's busier lines, but still totally appropriate for the song. Bassists like him are the true underdogs of the recorded music scene. I was playing along to "Gypsy" from their underrated "Mirage" album the other day, and really loved the economy of approach McVie used yet again. Your description here really brought up good points as well. I always found it impressive when usually busy (but still tasteful) players would totally change their approach to suit the song, proving that they were more versatile than originally thought. Chris Squire's line on "Owner Of A Lonely Heart" is a good example. Sure, it was originally Trevor Rabin's idea, but for Chris to lay back like that and totally serve the song was pure genius. Playing to the song is really the most important maxim when it comes to being an effective bass player. Nice job!
Thanks. I played "Gypsy" in the last band I was in and enjoyed it immensely. It's amazing how, when you play more supportively and more sparsely, the music seems to open up. And if and when you do get around to throwing something tasteful in, it really stands out. Of course, on TH-cam it's always more interesting to see someone play the more acrobatic stuff but, like you alluded to, it sort of misrepresents the core function of the bass guitar. "Owner..." is a great example of a player taking one for the team and doing the right thing for the song. I don't know if it's an age thing or what, but, when I was young, I couldn't grasp the concept of "less is more." Thanks for suffering through the whole narrative there.
McVie always plays whats required for the song, yet gets in his subtle licks. Troy's ear is so good, he always grabs the slightest nuances out of thin air, and shows you how its done.
Love my Rush, love my Yes, but I absolutely adore John's playing, especially on this song - nice work nailing it, Troy. Love those fills driving the tune forward. It always seems that he doesn't play one note less or more than what's needed. "You Make Loving Fun" is another good one that shows his ability to pick the right note at the right time.
Kudos brother..What I Love so much about your lessons is that you can actually hear the bass when you’re playing along with the record. There have been other lessons that I have looked at on other TH-cam channels and you can’t hear the base, thank you so much for a great balance of everything that you do on here 👊😎
Nice one. You're so right about the challenge of playing not. Sometimes it's hard to wait for your turn to play those few notes. I experienced this with ac/dc.
All I can say is "WOW" Troy!!! I have ALWAYS "LOVED" this Fleetwood-Mac song (mainly due to Christine Singing it! She's got a BEAUTIFUL voice!) And yes,I'm aware of the "cocktail" drum-sets! When I still played in my funk-jazz group,we'd always play before or after certain groups where the drummer used those compact-sets. Anyway,as You said, most of the "bassline" in Fleetwood-Mac songs are LOST due to John blending his bass so "perfectly" within the melodies of the songs,so when I watched YOU play this,I could SEE how eloquent the bass was played in this!!! AWESOME JOB Man!!!
Thanks. I mentioned before that most of the songs I like the best from Fleetwood Mac seem to Christine McVie's. That fellow's cocktail set really seemed to suit the songs well, but after I joined up with them, he was replaced by a revolving throne of drummers.
Doing a Fleetwood Mac tribute show in Arizona in a few weeks. I have played all of these songs for years, but always missing a few details here and there. Your videos are saving me a lot of time. Thank you !
Nice work! John McVie/Dreams is what got me to pick up the bass some 40 years ago. One of the smoothest bass lines ever imo. While I love the busy bass lines,, I can't deny I always go back to the Mac.
Like what you said for 'Love Will Keep Us Together" the John McVie line I knew by heart even before I picked up a bass was his line in "Sara." Between his line and MF's brush work on drums I can't think of a better example where the bass supports - propels, in fact - the song without getting in the way or overshadowing the melody. I appreciate your thoughtful approach to bass and I especially like your comments framing the song in a context.
Really great job with this one, and I really appreciated the written intro (What would John McVie do?). John McVie has always been a favourite player of mine, and it never fails: whenever I mention him, the person I'm talking to gets a quizzical look across their face as if saying, "Huh? Are you nuts?" But once you key into what he's doing, you never hear the song the same way again. Subtle, understated, but magic. Thanks!
I have a few Q's about the bass: 1) Do you ever play chords like guitar players do? 2) Is having 5-6 strings better then the standard 4 strings or do more strings just make it harder to play because it would make the fretboard too crowded because the strings are so thick already? 3) Unfortunately, the bass is not heard as prominently in rock bands. For example, if you listen to City Pop Japanese music you DO hear it very prominently. But in many other rock bands you don't really hear it unless you have really good speakers or a FLAC track or a DAC. Do you think the bass is purposely not heard as easily in these rock bands because it was recorded this way to be less prominent? (You can compare Anri - Remember Summer Days; Tatsuro Yamashita - The Door Into Summer ; to American 70's-90's bands as an example).
1. Not usually, though some guys do at times. 2. The more strings, the wider the neck, so the string spacing on a 5 or 6 string is similar to that of a 4 string, though some 5 & 6 string spacing is a bit tighter. 3. I'm not sure if I agree with that, but I'm not really familiar with City Pop Japanese music.
wow, that's right where I'm at right now. Playing in a band that covers 50-60's,and it is making Me re-think all my playing/style. Here I've been doing all this slap style and 16th note playing over the last year or two,and I'm not using any of it the past few months. But I'm digging these more simple bass lines also, they serve the song and not The ego! ♪♫ Keep up the good work♪♫
TJH3113 haha, yep. I've been playin for a lot of years and still tryin to "figure sh8 out". By the way....I've owned a ton of basses and that one you got there is tops,it was the last one to go before my Warwick love affair. But,I still keep a good Fender or two around. I shoulda kept the damn EB,your's is sounded perfectly ballsy and rippin some mids too. Anyway's ..peace and keep layin back in the grooves. It is tough to not throw a damn ghost note or triplet in there!
I was finally able to put a band together of likewise Fleetwood Mac enthusiasts when the covid struck back in March. We were looking to do primarily Bob Welch-era covers when John had a busier sound to his playing. Would love to hear/see one of those covers, like "Believe Me", "Just Crazy Love", and "Hypnotized". Thanks! And yes, we WILL get that band back together when we are all safe again!
Awesome! FM are a pretty popular band to tribute and I wish you much success with the project, though you might be selling yourself short by forgoing the Nicks/Buckingham era. I'm not really familiar with much of the older stuff, but I will check out your suggestions. Take care!
@@TJH3113 While the singer would prefer the Bob Welch era music, I am hoping to work in some of the buck/nicks era as well definitely some tasty bass lines in there. BTW, a FM suggestion from that era would be "Angel" from the Tusk album, would love to see a breakdown of that, John is playing all of these incredible fills that I have been trying to duplicate, and that is not even talking about how the bass totally drives this song. Check it out and let me know what you think!
Troy.. I couldn't agree more with your thoughts on playing the bass. I too had to stop playing 9 billion notes in every song and finally learned how to support the song. Took a while but its the right thing to do. Most people never noticed how "good" I was or cared anyways. Now when I want to play a billion notes, I play along with some rush or yes at home.. alone. And that's just fine.
Cool and thanks for sharing that. One thing I noticed when I started to curb my playing a bit was that when I did play a riff or a fill, it really stood out.
Great cover. And you mention John McVie, Leeland Sklar, or Paul McCartney, and Mike Mills. Those are my three top fave bassists. Esp McVie! A great study and very underrated, unless you know him like Mick Fleetwood.
great job troy! I ve always loved johns playing its so subtle but yet still harmonic and fits right into the mix. I always like playing Fleetwood after I get done playing rush or yes as cool down or mellow out session, even though totally different styles between them , I think my favorite songs from Fleetwood are "you make loving fun" and 'the chain' great basslines for both' go your own way' is a great bassline too
Thanks. It took a long time for me to appreciate this style of playing. When I was young, I think my philosophy was "If I can play the hard stuff, I can definitely play the simple stuff." Unfortunately, it doesn't work like that. Those other Fleetwood Mac songs are good aw well, I'll have to take a listen to them.
Ok,I don’t usually comment, but i keep running into you in my searches, and i got to tell you,you got the entire package going. Excellent tone,i mean KILLER tone, and you always seem to NAIL the little details that make all the difference. Im not a bass player, but a lead guitarist and you can join my band ANYDAY...lol. Great job Ps... im not even going to ask about the awsome masks behind you,but im willing to bet an Artistic mind as yours you probably made them. Subscribed!!!!
Awesome job on this one Troy. I look forward to each and every one of your videos, and this one does not dissappoint. I've been working on covering this bass line myself since yesterday, and I've almost got it. It's actually a lot simpler than it sounds! Keep up the nice work, looking forward to the next one!
Thank you so much for doing this video, I'm in a Fleetwood Mac tribute band although for some reason I'm not allowed to say that but I needed to learn this song very quickly and your video helped me massively, glad you're doing these videos your talent is too good to waste plus I love looking at your masks in the background makes me want to find out what face belongs what TV/film anyway thank you very much and ps your rush covers are perfect and I'm very jealous of your Captain Spalding mask I need to get one of them. Anyway Thank again you are an inspiration and for that I salute you 😁
Excellent. I'm glad the video was helpful. Most of the masks are original sculpts/characters, but there are a handful of movie characters. Thanks again.
Neil mentioned in one of his instructional drumming videos that he frames his drum parts to serve the song (I assume Geddy and Alex do as well). John did this consistently throughout the entire Fleetwood Mac catalog - the music remains timeless and a joy to listen to. I only hope that he can win his battle with cancer and make his way back onto the 'lighted stage'.
I think Neil "serves the song" in a different way than John McVie or Mick Fleetwood do. It's strange how they haven't let out what type of cancer McVie is suffering from. I hope he pulls through as well.
TJH3113 - Simple and remarkable is why we are not ex-guitars players. We are bass players. Mike Inez of AIC calls the bass "the sexiest instrument." Your bass and tone and playing, and nice haircut amongst all those "Iron Maiden Eddies," is lookin' there yer good. This bass line is as skiing a foot of new in the sun with a nice girl.
Was it hard to play this song when you played it for the first time? I'm having on the chorse about the 2:48 mark. But sense I'm playing it on a 5 string i like to use the low B sometimes and use it on this song (i wonder if the low B can be used on the chain? Or if John mcvee ever used a 5 string? 🤔)
What is your favorite Fleetwood Mac song to play? I want to ad one to my repertoire. The Chain has one of the most iconic bass licks in popular music but I find the rest of the bass part a bit boring. I’d love to know what Fleetwood Mac song you think is the most fun! Thank you!
I was wondering if you could do the fleetwood Mac songs 'save me' in a bass cover some time And the first chain song on a bass it's called 'keep me there'? it was the first draft of the chain.
very melodic bass line. are you tuned standard? Nice job. thanks. think Lindsey would get onto John to be less busy on the Bass, but John really shines on this one.
I don't think I've ever heard the song. I'll check it out. Actually, Fleetwood Mac is one of the Top 5 bands in terms of making life heard for people posting covers.
Thanks. This bass sounds a bit "flatter" than the Jazz basses and suited this song better. The only eq-ing I might do to my sound is to back off the highs a bit.
T, Why did you choose the MM for this cover? Unless I missed it, you did not touch the B-string. McVie's part sounds scooped a tiny bit on the original, and so does your MM, a tiny bit. Great job again; and an important lesson from the university of "less is more".Best regards/G
I rarely play the B string. Mostly it's used as a thumb rest. I used the MM because I wanted a bit of a "flatter" less "in your face" sound, which the MM can do easier than my other basses.
Btw,I just listened to Liz's song (from the link ya gave above) and OMG,she DOES INDEED,sound A-LOT like Natalie Merchant!!! I mean........A.......LOT like her!!! Lol.
What would John McVie do? He'd marry a hottie singer babe, and then after she joins his band wind up divorcing her, but be professional enough to continue playing with her on and off for decades.... When I was a teenager my band covered Still Loving You by the Scorpions. For a guy who learned bass listening to Rush it was tough for me to play that simple and slow, but it pays to learn to leave space in a song like that.
Couldn't imagine the drama that went on in that band. I had a really hard time playing the simple stuff too and ruined more than my fair share of songs by overplaying.
Great cover. John McVie is criminally underrated in my opinion.
Thanks. I agree.
honestly, this is my favorite bass line of all time - so beautiful and melodic, and really compliments the song throughout all its three parts. simple or not, they don't make'em like this anymore.
What you described are all the trademarks of a John McVie bassline and I couldn’t agree more. Thanks and take care!
Amen!
Love McVie , you are right , he always plays exactly what the songs needs
...and never gets in the way.

Masterful work! Super useful to help me learn, thank you.
Thanks. Great to hear.
another masterful job on a classic line. Keep 'em coming!!!
Thanks, will do!
Just what I was looking for. Perfect!

I do enjoy the bass line on this song especially near the end 👍👍

Thanks Captain!
Thank you. You helped me fix a little big part I’ve been playing wrong. Nice tone too. 😁
Happy to help!
That outro really seals the deal

TJH3113 - Simple and remarkable is why we are not ex-guitars players. We are bass players. Mike Inez of AIC calls the bass "the sexiest instrument." Your bass and tone and playing, and nice haircut amongst all those "Iron Maiden Eddies," is lookin' there yer good. This bass line is as skiing a foot of new in the sun with a nice girl.
Can someone please tab out the chorus for me? I've looked via google for these tabs, but I can't find this version.
Everything is hard when I play it for the first time.
What is your favorite Fleetwood Mac song to play? I want to ad one to my repertoire. The Chain has one of the most iconic bass licks in popular music but I find the rest of the bass part a bit boring. I’d love to know what Fleetwood Mac song you think is the most fun! Thank you!
I was never a big Fleetwood Mac fan, but I always liked this song.
@@TJH3113 Thanks! And having this video will be a big help!
o true man less is more in the right situation. for me i always gravitate to original bands. but when i want to learn a cover i turn on the TROY
Thanks!
It is, isn't it? Yes, standard tuning on this one.
John McVie is amazing
Big truth
Could you maybe do the version from "The Dance" sometime? I'd like to hear and see how you would change it up.
How can I learn this song? any lessons?
What do you recommend to get that tuba sound out of your bass?
Signature sound
More mids, less highs, a bit of low-end.
Hi, there! Do you do any session work by chance?
Hello. No, not really, unless someone happens to catch me at just the right time.
Troy, why can’t I find ANYTHING for Hold me on bass? Is Stevie Nicks that uptight about her song? Nobody said a word when you covered Go your own way.
I don't think I've ever heard the song. I'll check it out. Actually, Fleetwood Mac is one of the Top 5 bands in terms of making life heard for people posting covers.
your bass work is phenomenal :) would love to see you play Toploader's Dancing in the Moonlight
Thanks a lot. That's not a bad idea.
Do you ever write any of these bass lines out in standard notation or tab?
No, I play by ear and memory.
Ok thanks
ever notice how the bass lines to he songs that Christine wrote were a bit more interesting, a bit more complex, than the ones that she didn't?
Definitely. I'm not a big fan of the band, but the songs I really like tend to be Christine's songs.
Really nice job - as usual. You get very different tonal styles out of your basses - do you any effects for this, or it all done through finger style?
Great stuff, I have a request. Could you please do a cover Of "Is This Love" by Alison Moyet?
❤️
Thank you
This is a fantastic bass cover what bass is it
Thank you. This bass is a MusicMan Stingray 5 string.
Can you make one elvis Presley"you dont have to say you love me"???
I'll check it out.
Btw,I just listened to Liz's song (from the link ya gave above) and OMG,she DOES INDEED,sound A-LOT like Natalie Merchant!!! I mean........A.......LOT like her!!! Lol.
She does...right?
TJH3113 OMGOODNESS "YES"!!! Lol.
You are the coolest guy ever
You don't get out much, do you? Thanks.
TJH3113:)
Plz cover “ Over My Head “ Fleetwood Mac … plz ! … thx
I'll check it out. Thanks for the suggestion!
This bassline in my veins pls
Very cool.
Thats the Mike Mills quote haha
Yes, it is. I've quoted it in just about every Fleetwood Mac cover I've done. Words to live by.
Now your using a Music Master one pic up. So what’s the deal with all of your gear ??? They all sound the same
What would John McVie do? He'd marry a hottie singer babe, and then after she joins his band wind up divorcing her, but be professional enough to continue playing with her on and off for decades....
When I was a teenager my band covered Still Loving You by the Scorpions. For a guy who learned bass listening to Rush it was tough for me to play that simple and slow, but it pays to learn to leave space in a song like that.
Couldn't imagine the drama that went on in that band. I had a really hard time playing the simple stuff too and ruined more than my fair share of songs by overplaying.
Who the F thumbs downed this???
Amazing how one of his best bass lines is a song that his wife wrote about the man she was cheating on him with
Wow, I did not know that. Did John McVie know?
I believe he did. The guy was part of their road crew.
