I think it's a clean execution of this famous theme, thanks for sharing such a lovely music.

I’m not a trombone player but a flutist and love this song as it reminds me of my dad but this was done in a lower key! Heard it right away. It didn’t have that high pitch that I was hoping for. Still nice.

BB is as a good as key as any.. That cat is smooth.

Wow, you guys in the comments are brutal! Sure wrong key and all that, but it is nice that Mr. Dorsey is still remembered and admired 80 years later.

Very nice job. Some people coming down hard because of the key. I’m sure the band that hired him was simply using the arrangement available. I’ve played this arrangement myself. The style was perfectly fine minus the fast vibrato that they used in the dance band era. If you want to hear a really unmusical version from another great trombonist check out Christian Lindbergh.

Yes, very nicely done. But since it was a straight rendition of Dorsey, I was expecting him to play in D, the Dorsey key. Bb is a lot easier, but just does not display the range of the trombone.

Lovely, fine band, fine trombonist: not easy to play: the high a is crucial

Close your eyes when listening and I don't think you can tell the difference between Ian and Tommy 🙂 Great job!

Except Tommy Dorsey played it in the key of D major, not Bb as here.

@@nanmaddox Touche' although I have no doubt that Ian could have handled it regardless of the key.

      @@nanmaddox Correct - High D - a major third higher.

Yeah, Ian wouldn't have been able to handle the d major. He's good, but not good ole days of trombone good.

@@Stonebone-nu8dkhate to break it to you but Ian Bousfield is far better technically than any of the trombonists back in the day. Doesn’t mean you can’t prefer Dorsey’s playing though.

The original is in D, a major third higher. This is a stock arrangement, the original is much better.
Well played, but stylistically kind of lame.

Nice playing but big bore gear doesn’t sound so romantic as a small jazz horn on this. Big horns sound log a hog on ice in this setting.

If you are going to imitate the master and directly fall under his shadow, you damn well better do it right! You can't fake the key (transpose down a M3), because the arrangement was written with that specific key in mind to display Dorsey's control over the lower high range. And, you can't fake his presence. Dorsey's sound was commanding and had real presence with more dynamic and far superior control of decay. This player, not bad, but very lacking compared to Dorsey. I am not old enough to have heard TD live, but I did work with Paul Tanner, another spectacular trombonist that played with G Miller for a number of years, and he could really play this tune in Dorsey's key with complete presence. Paul was an amazing player. Buddy Morrow, another really fine bonist, could approach Dorsey also. And, I heard him many times live.

Believe me Ian has NO Lack of upper register. He could have easily played it an octave higher. The reason he's playing it in this key is because it's the standard arrangement made in the transposed key (not Dorsey s) because that's what the rest of the band had. This arrangement is for High School, College, and Community Big Bands. It is and has been readily available through any music publisher for more than 50 years.

@@zimnochmusic No, I am not going to believe you. I wrote for Rex Allen when he conducted the TD orchestra, and also played tener bone intermediate college level. Now I publish with Universal Editions (but only orchestral music). It's all in the ear. Nothing else needs to be believed. Also, if you were a bone player you would immediately notice his alto register is fairly thin, and lacks overtones. Doesn't matter how high you can play. What matters is the beauty of a full tone in the register you can perform. And, also, if you are going to conduct famous works by the TD orchestra (not alone his signature song), you are not going to defer to High School arrangements. You will go for the originals. When I was with Rex I only handled original arrangements. Anything less is just rank amateur. But, thanks for your kind comment.

@@zimnochmusic Oh, well thanks for that information! I directed high school bands for a number of years, and if I had a really good bone player, I would shoot for this work. Thanks again.

Strange critique? Ian’s clearly not imitating Dorsey but playing the solo arrangement handed to him in his own way. His playing is beautiful and faultless. Truly one of the best trombonists out there currently…..
