The title probably requires a modification, as most of these grounds do still exist in some capacity. Maybe "10 AFL stadiums that are no longer used for games" is more appropriate
The Junction Oval could make a come back as a smaller stadium (~25K) that Victoria really needs with the MCG at 100K & Docklands at 50K. It wouldn’t hurt the St Kilda Cricket Club and would give it a true purpose during the winter months.
This video is mostly correct but some of the grounds do still exist but are just no longer used for AFL games. Unfortunately there are a number of mispronunciation. Also Essendon have not used Windy Hill as a training and Administration venue since 2013 when they opened the Hangar (NEC Hangar).
TBF it would love to live next to that. Just grab the sherrin and head down with some friends. I used to live in a towerblock next to a somewhat disused Rugby pitch in southern japan and it was awesome. Goal practice after schools.
Waverly Park/ VFL Park was initially intended to have 150,000 seats. But the premier of Melbourne was also an mcc member & was concerned that this stadium would overtake the mcg for sporting events- thus he cancelled any maintence. With the construction of docklands/ marvel stadium underwater & waverly park having drainage/ sewage issues it was decided to decommission the stadium & use the land for residential housing.
Some of the grounds still exist, and they now have the AFLW playing on them, the 2024 AFLW Grand Final was played at Ikon Park (Princess Park), there was no mention that Hawthorn uses Waverley (AFL) Park as a training facility.
This American thanks you for the education about beloved former venues in your Australian Football League. When I first saw the title, I thought this video would be about extinct venues in the American Football League, a 1960's rival to the long-established National Football League, which merged with the older league in 1970.
Sad that more teams don't have a traditional home. A quarter full MCG can be pretty depressing especially last year watching Richmond struggle! Will be struggling in the Marvel on Sunday lunchtime in 2025!! Here in Scotland the soccer grounds are essential to the identity of the clubs. I support Aberdeen, Pittodrie is pretty run down, no facilities, not even a big screen but get 20000 at an Aberdeen v Rangers game and it's bouncing. I do think Geelong and Brisbane in particular do get a slight advantage playing at home. It's great that the biggest games are played at the MCG so people can go watch but I miss the variety and unique venues I used to see on TV in the 80's.
@Yellowandblackscot Pretty depressing watching Richmond at any time. We're broke in the 1980s and should have been moved on to the Federal League or some other lower association. Saved by money from interstate licences but now falling into irrelevance, despite a short revival under Hardwicke. No future for this club especially with expansion of AFL into Tas, NY and North Queensland. Along with North and Essendon will be kicked out of the AFL within 10 years.
@@peterfreeman1585I really hope you're wrong but after a long hiatus of the game being on UK TV I did wonder who the Gold Coast Suns are, actually where is the Gold Coast!!? Western Bulldogs? Where are Fitzroy! Yup North will probably go. Richmond has maybe because of the success and membership numbers added a bit of time. I don't see expansion as the panacea the AFL think it is. For me tradition is more important than expansion. If you wanted the best competition then you'd introduce promotion and relegation. You can't control it but if you go down, you can come back up. They'd never do that.
@@Yellowandblackscot The Gold Coast is in Queensland, South of Brisbane. Fitzroy merged with the Brisbane Bears to become the Brisbane Lions And yes a promotin/relegation system would be good, as long as it was open to ALL the leagues: Eg: WAFL, VFL, SANFL... But this will NOT hapen while 10 of the 18 (soon to be 19) clubs are based in Melbourne [Don't say that Geelong isn't in Melbourne. If they get a "home" final it isn't played in Kardinia Park, but at the MCG]
I agree with you Shane but in fairness to Kaleen he just suggests that this is a list of 10 grounds he has selected. He doesn't claim to include every ground no longer used as an AFL venue.
I’d love a retro round each year, but like Gather Round, where each club uses their old home ground. Well, each Melbourne club anyway, though having Brisbane fill Brunswick Oval would be interesting. Places like Arden St would need a fair bit of scaffold seats and I don’t know how safe remaining stands like the ones at Vic’ Park, Glenferrie or Windy Hill would be, but one can dream. For those who argue the venues wouldn’t be able to sit everyone, I know that, but TV coverage would make up for bums on seats losses.
@Wingyy1995 Those grounds were getting fairly tired (nice way of saying dilapidated) before they ceased to cater to AFL games. Poor and insufficient seating, pathetic players amenities and change rooms, parking limitations wereva turn off factor for all of them. To bring them up to scratch and then maintain them at that level would be unprofitable - therefore against everything a voracious AFL represents. Another likelihood that it is almost certain is that the AFL will not continue to tolerate (let alone support) the poor playing results, boardroom shenanigans and poor financial returns from clubs like North Melbourne, Richmond, Footscray, Essendon, and Melbourne. Short (1 or 2 year) death twitches by these clubs will not be used to save them. With the demise of four or five of these Melbourne based clubs, the old mud heaps shown in this video will no longer have sentimentalists looking for their retention and they can then be developed to ease our housing crisis.
Bring back all the venues for afl Waverley Park, Windy Hill, Victoria Park ect to have every team to have their own home grounds. The Old days are the best!

No the title is perfect as it is since most people don't have autism. "Duhh but muh intricacies!"
“More Abbon” oval was a great ground 😂
😂😂
This vid should be renamed "A collection of weird pronunciation"
Where is this tool from? Victoria Pork, Moor Abbin WTF?

most, and possibly all, of the images that you say are the East Melbourne Cricket Ground, are actually depicting the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
This video is mostly correct but some of the grounds do still exist but are just no longer used for AFL games. Unfortunately there are a number of mispronunciation. Also Essendon have not used Windy Hill as a training and Administration venue since 2013 when they opened the Hangar (NEC Hangar).
They turned Football Park into apartments :(
So many great memories in the 90s.

Good video. Bombers haven't trained at Windy Hill for over 10 years though!!

This video should be called grounds where VFL and AFL games were played that won’t be used for regular season matches in 2025.
Lol
Keep up these off season videos👍

Many of these grounds exist. You also used a picture of Princes Park when discussing Windy Hill.
And Victoria PORK while talking about VFL PORK...
At 0:27 you used a picture of Waverley Park in Sydney while discussing Waverley Park in Melbourne.
What about the WACA?
Punt rd,western oval
Glenferrie Oval , Arden Street?
THE AFL SHOULD USE IKON PARK AGAIN :(
Totally agree! 👍 Go Blues!

I’m getting pretty sad that these stadiums Dion’s exist anymore but I’m glad some teams use it for their training
Need to change the title to grounds the AFL does not use. Ikon park just hosted the AFLW final.
AFLW has about as much relevance to Australian Rules Football as a Diana Ross concert.
@peterfreeman1585 😂
What about Glenferrie Oval ?????
Imagine if we used even a third of the VFL fields in this video throughout the season instead of having 150 games at Marvel and the MCG... every year

Missing the WACA.
There's at least another 10.
I don't get why the AFL has 5 team play at one place. Give your teams a actual home ground
Unfortunately it's all about money for the AFL. Maximise crowds in fewer venues!
Disproportionate public resources go into this stuff…geez

What happen to ARDEN ST home to nth Melbourne kangaroo football club .. Who ever put eastern football in surely doesn't know his grounds very well.
