It's worth it in Suship because the Normal Summoned monster effect lock is irrelevant and the archetype lacks a decent omninegate, which Wandering Gryphon Rider can provide. Your Gunkan Suship Sharis can also serve as targets for Dracoback and you can't really go wrong having extra bodies on board for the OTK.

I think it was removed to make room for the Adventurer engine.

I find that the field spell is a terribly mediocre extender. You'll more often than not load hands that don't get you to the field spell at all, and when you do if you didn't just hard draw it you have to have additional extension after making Ikura-class Dreadnought for it to be of any use. Most of the time it just fills up the Field Spell Zone so Ikura-class Dreadnought gives destruction immunity, so I'm not surprised some lists cut it.
