Year 20XX is meant to prevent the 'Star Trek paradox' crap of the third world war and eugenics wars all happening by the year 1996......which hasn't happened. So 20XX is always gonna be in the future, no matter when you watch the show (Until the year 2100, but by then odds are Mega Man either won't be a thing anymore, or will have an updated and rebooted system with a new year in place)
I'm honestly offended with your friend's attitude when it came to viewing the stats and history of the Mega Men. I understand that not everyone appreciates the same things as others, but how about keep your complains to yourself? Sure, it's tedious and frustrating if you're not a fan, but keep in mind of others' opinions.

I know that there was a lot of analysis going on in this particular fight since there were five combatants. But you really should pay attention to the details because otherwise you get the situation that you were just in where you’re going: “oh wow he won? I never would’ve called that.”
oh yeah cause it's such a dumb concept that maybe in another timeline they worked on the cyber space and AI but it's not wild when the robot timeline has robot people living in Human's shoes. look, I'm not the biggest fan of the series (i enjoy it to a degree, but i haven't played every game and read/watched everything from the series) but even i think it's cool they have differing timelines exploring advancements in both robotics and AI, something we are still doing even if we fear we might create something Hollywood made us fear in the first place. Even if Megaman.exe and the timeline itself sounds dumb you have to admit most of the series is silly or insane with how it portrays how we might make these in the future. and frankly: i like the Megaman Network series since i grew up on the show. it was cool.
than again, what series do you like that has some stupid story or insane story with BS powers? i can already name like 10 of my head and i can still enjoy them. just because it sounds dumb or is weird doesn't mean it's bad.

I get you but with both EXE and Starfoce being able to hack Machines and take them over none of the Robotic Megamans ever had a real chance of winning. Even the Mother Elfe is no help ther because we know it can be hacked and corruptet as Weil showed us in Megaman Zero
