On Sunday afternoon and evening, Swami Purnamritananda Puri from Mata Amritanandamayi Math was a guest of honour at a record-setting event at Tanah Lot Temple in Tabanan Regency. Swamiji was accompanied by Agus Indra Udayana (spiritualist and humanitarian, founder of Ashram Gandhi Puri), and joined Eka Wiryastuti (Governor, Recency of Tabanan, Bali), Dr. Arya Wedakarna (local political activist and youth leader, grandson of Indonesia’s first President), and a number of scholars, sannyasis, and other VIPs. Surpi Arya Dharma, who is a youth activist in Bali and who is part of Amma’s Bali Group, spearheaded and coordinated this event which saw over 8,000 people gather to chant the Bhagavad Gita in its entirety. The kind, innocent, and devotional nature of the Balinese, their resolute faith, and the preservation of their culture is beyond remarkable - it's extraordinary! After the chanting of the Gita came to an end, there were a number of dances and performances related to Krishna and Arjuna’s interactions in the epic story. A number of the dignitaries commented on the Gita and were involved in the formalities which an event of this magnitude commands.

Tamil Rajas didn't spread Hinduism in South East Asia. That region was already Hindu-Buddhist by that time. Cholas of Thanjavur, Palas of Bengal all had trade relations with Sri Vijaya empire of present day Sumatra region, Sailendras of present day Java region. The region which comprises of Vietnam, Laos, Thailand was under Khmer Dynasty or Angkorian dyn. The Angkor Wat temple was built by Raja Suryavarman of Angkorian dyn, which was a Hindu-Buddhist dynasty. They all had flourishing trade relations with India in the medieval era

I'm from Indian state of Odisha, earlier known as Kalinga. We had deep cultural and trade relationship with Bali. Out sailors used to go with native goods and return back after few months to sell goods from Bali. Evry year, we still celebrate Bali trade festival, the largest trade festival still in Odisha, but now you will find sell & purchase of local hoods only. We also still celebrate a festival that bids farewell to out sailors and wish them goodluck for journey, although the traditional trade link between Odisha & Bali is long dead. But even today when we look at Bali, we feel this connection where our ancestors used to sail everyyear.
