I've just bought my first dulcimer after listening to your songs. I haven't played anything for 30 years but I'm encouraged to start again. I'll probably never reach the Pinnacle you're at but it's a goal I needed, thanks.
I'm doing fine, Aries! :-) I've just been spending more time teaching private lessons and workshops than creating new video content. I will have a new book and perhaps a new album before too long. :-)
Thank you! I don't have tab for this piece yet; I usually like to learn songs by ear. However, I have been working on writing several pieces of tablature for traditional songs lately, so I may tab out this cantiga one day! I first heard it played by an ensemble called Broceliande, which specializes in Medieval and Renaissance music. Which Sephardic songs do you like to play?
Beautiful work! Most players never consider playing this kind of thing on the dulcimer, though the instrument, being modal, is perfectly suited for it. Do you have tabs for this piece, by any chance? (I play a couple of old Sephardic songs on mine.)
This is the single most beautiful piece of music I've ever heard performed on Dulcimer. I'm a fumbling learner but to play with even a shade of your talent would please me!
Thank you so much, Adrian! If you’re interested, I’ve been hosting many opportunities for growth in mount dulcimer playing, including workshops, lessons, and festival courses. I tell more about these at my website: www.JessicaComeauDulcimer.com
I have been listening to dulcimer music for about an hour now, going through videos and links to find something that caught my ear. This did the trick! Wonderful!
I appreciate your stopping by to listen, Craig! If you're interested in learning how to play this song, I have included it in my new mountain dulcimer book and DVD set, "Mountain Dulcimer Wildflowers." You can find out more about it here: www.JessicaComeauDulcimer.com/products.html (I also have a trailer on my channel!) Again, thank you so much for your kindness!
Here I was listening to lyres, harps, mandolins, guitars, ukuleles, trying to find a new instrument to learn. Then I fall on this video and I'm sold with the first 30 sec. I really want to learn to play the mountain dulcimer. Wow what a sound, it's like exactly what I was searching for without knowing what I really wanted! Thank you Jessica!
How exciting, Noir! Thank you for sharing your story with me. Perhaps you might enjoy my “How to Play the Mountain Dulcimer” videos that are on my channel as well. :-)
That's awesome, Noelia! Your country has a rich musical heritage, and the beautiful melodies of the cantigas have inspired my own arrangements. Thank you so much! :-)
Wow! Absolutely beautiful. You have been very richly Blessed with a rare and enchanting beauty and talent. That beauty and talent in turn is a very rich gift from the Universe to all of us that have been lucky enough to find you. You are a genuine treasure. Thank you.
"Cantiga #1" is now featured on my new album "Songs of the Earthly Pilgrimage: Medieval and World Folk Music on the Appalachian Mountain Dulcimer." :-) You can listen to samples here: th-cam.com/video/30kwRtXCNek/w-d-xo.html and to find out more, you can visit www.jessicacomeaudulcimer.com.
Got my first dulcimer 18 years ago and have just picked it back up after a long break. I mostly played celtic stuff until I saw this and it blew me away. I have also bought the cantiga cd with this one on it. What is the tuning you use, I can follow your fingering as I don't read music much just go by ear. Well done.
That's wonderful news, Joe! Our Pensacola Mountain Dulcimer Wildflowers "Dulcimer in Your Closet Project" is dedicated to encouraging people to bring out their dulcimers from hiding and play them and to celebrating those who have done so, so I'm happy to hear that the mountain dulcimer has re-emerged as a bigger part of your life. :-) Did you happen to find Broceliande's "Cantiga Medely"? That's the recording that familiarized me with this particular cantiga. Enjoy exploring the world of medieval music on the mountain dulcimer!
I like playing them as well. In addition to ballads from the British Isles, I enjoy also playing renaissance music on the dulcimer. I think I have a couple videos of those on my channel... gotta get the camera out more often. LOL
Have you explored some of the other cantigas de Santa Maria? IIRC, these songs were popular with pilgrims on the road to Santiago de Compostela, and it was El Rey Alfonso (El Sabio, the wise) who collected them in written form. I'm sure they were danced as well as sung.
I don't have a transcription of my arrangement for Cantiga #1 yet, but I am so glad that you enjoyed it! Thank you for your kinds words and for your willing ear, Lynn! :-)
I thought you might like to know that "Cantiga #1" is now available in intermediate and advanced arrangements in my new book and DVD set "Mountain Dulcimer Wildflowers." You can find out more about it here: th-cam.com/video/UxVnyOs4BIs/w-d-xo.html
Absolutely stunning. Are the instructions for this song included in your wildflowers song book? Would love to learn to play this song one day, if I decide to learn to play the dulcimer.
Thank you so much! I do have tablature for this song in "Wildflowers" as well as two new and improved arrangements in my digital book "Cantigas de Santa Maria": www.JessicaComeauDulcimer.com/products.html
I'm glad you enjoyed my song, Bob! I'm not certain which cantiga it is, but I first learned this particular cantiga from the band Broceliande's original title recording. :-)
Thank you! You are very kind. I don't have a tab for this one at present, but I first learned this cantiga from Broceliande's original title recording. I was then inspired to create my own arrangement.
watching your fingers and listening to the sweet sound kind of had me transfixed. this song would be great as a video in a different setting. very pretty...the music too. :)
This is awesome! I'm probably betraying my musical naivete, but I really liked the way that for certain portions the lower strings acted almost like drones while the higher string was the melody. Beautiful sound.
Yes, you are exactly right about the drone strings! :-) Usually we call the string or strings closest to you the "melody" strings, and then you have the bass and middle strings. I appreciate your thoughtful feedback! Thank you.
I bought a mountain dulcimer last year and meant to spend some quality time with it, but ended up focusing more on my guitar. Watching this makes me think maybe I should pick up that dulcimer again :)
Claire Fossey Yes, there's something uniquely special about the mountain dulcimer, and the worldwide mountain dulcimer community is a warm, diverse group to associate with.
+Gary Leavelle I was very happy to find out that cantigas felt at home on the mountain dulcimer. :-) I do love to play ancient, minor key pieces... Thank you so much, and thank you for stopping by to listen. :-)
All the mountain dulcimers that I play in my videos are made by McSpadden Dulcimers. The instrument in this video is an all cherry wood dulcimer that I named Rosie. :-)
Thank you so much, Dominique! In this video, I am playing my first instrument, a solid cherry wood dulcimer by McSpadden Dulcimers: www.mcspaddendulcimers.com. :-)
I love this (and all the others from your album), and have started seriously working on it. Looking forward to seeing you at Stephen Foster and taking some of your classes.
I, too, am looking forward to the Stephen Foster Dulcimer Retreat, Jon! Thank you for listening! I hope you enjoy the process of learning this song as much as I did. :-)
My friends and I started playing a role playing game called Dungeons & Dragons. I opted to play a Gnome who is a Bard. During my character creation I was given the option of an instrument to play so I selected the dulcimer. Not knowing what that is, I googled it and your video popped up and so I thought that your music would be perfect to play during the game to provide another level of experience. Then as luck would have it, I was able to find your ablum on iTunes (which is really awesome). We played our game this past weekend and everyone loved it. Your music was enjoyed by the group as they envisioned my bard being the musician while I played the music from my iPhone. Thanks again for your music and allowing us to enjoy it during our game.
What a wonderful story, Chris! Thank you for sharing. I am glad that my music is interwoven with the story of your life and with imaginary adventures with your friends. :-)
NEW DIGITAL BOOK... I am excited to announce the release of my new book for mountain dulcimer players: "Cantigas de Santa Maria: A Selection of Medieval Songs for Mountain Dulcimer." This video is the reason I’m buying a dulcimer
I cannot think of a more beautiful sound. Thank you.
All the range is something, the depth the space inside the song
At some point between a key board and a guitar. 👍
I do love to play medieval songs, especially songs in a minor key! :-) Thank you for listening!
That smile in the end when she knows she nailed it.😄
My aunt played a lap dulcimer.
What did it look like? :-)
Allan saved my life in December 2022. Through his words, actions and Music. 'NEVER ALONE' I am still here. Bless you all
There could be no greater advert for this type of instrument than this. Beautiful.
