Please don't underestimate how huge South America is/ how long it takes to get around! I've backpacked both SEA and S America and whereas SEA is quite compact and quick to travel around, in S America you are going to get very tired/ not see very much if you pack in too much. Overall spent 5 weeks in Colombia, 4 weeks in Peru, 5.5 weeks in Argentina, about 8 days in Bolivia and it really wasn't enough!
You have to understand how huge LATAM is compared to SE Asia- I am from Uk live in Costa Rica. It’s 10 hours of flying minimum to get just from CR to Argentina. And can be up to $1k dollars to get there. We are going to Argentina from Costa Rica next month

Nicaragua Guatemala Costa Rica were my top favorite trips i’ve done 🫶🏻
I recently went to Costa Rica and my top tips are to visit Treetopia in Monteverde, Jaguar Rescue Centre in Puerto Viejo, stay in a hotel with access to hot springs in Arenal and take binoculars for sloth/animal sightings
Nicaragua was my favourite place to visit ever!

So exciting that you’re going to South America!! I’ve lived in Uruguay and Argentina and got to do lots of travel in South America. For a tourist I would say Uruguay is really really not worth it is it is super expensive and there is not a lot going on there unless you know people, especially in Montevideo. If you do really really want to visit I think you could do maybe a day in Montevideo then go up the coast to punts del este, la paloma and Cabo polonia, but all in all I wouldn’t recommend it. Argentina, Brazil and Peru however I would really really really recommend. I lived in Buenos Aires until the start of this year and have some fun recommendations I can send you on instagram of my favourite places in the city. I think it is honestly my one of my favourite cities in the world very vibrant with loads of things to do!!! Argentina is also really worth doing lots of, going up to salta and jujuy, down to Patagonia. I would say iguazu falls is also a must see - you only need a day or two here but I really really recommend it. Brazil is incredible, the people are so warm, Rio is isanely beautiful with really good vibes. It is really unsafe so be really really careful but as long as you stick to touristy areas and are really really be careful with your things it’s be okay (I can also send some Rio recs on insta) Peru is probably the most touristy so probably easier to research, one thing to really be careful of/ aware of is altitude sickness in and around Cusco, it is super super high so make sure to give yourself a couple days to acclimatise (speaking from experience of throwing up walking to Machu Picchu 😅). I would also say skip Lima, really not good vibes. If you’re in Cusco it could also be worth thinking about going to Bolivia, the salt flats are insane there, literally feels like you’re on a different planet. I saw someone else comment this but one thing to really think about in comparison to se Asia is the distances, South America is HUGE, something I didn’t realise til I went but its actually massive so for the time frame defo look at flights.
