Mayonnaise, it is getting ready to be summer and I need a vegan version for tomato sandwiches, potato salad, etc. I like the way that you tell the whole story... With options for everybody 🙏
Derik! This is epic. I was literally at my grocery store 1 hour ago and I ALMOST bought this because of how much you use it… I decided not to buy it because of the ingredients and the price… I’m so glad to be able to check out this tutorial thank you!! 🙏
It's honestly incredible how hard your videos and recipes go sometimes. I've been cooking most of my life and am continuously surprised by the techniques you use, the ways you prepare things, and cracking the code on beloved condiments like bachan's. Well done as always 💖
My hero!!!! This sauce is so expensive here and obviously not the healthiest but soooo good. I kept meaning to write you to request a homemade version. Dream come true! You're the best!
I just bought some of the og sauce and really just tastes like high quality ginger teriyaki sauce tbh. Definitely good but I've had it before in other brands.
Can you answer my question, is it true that mirin is supposed to be naturally sweet without added sugar? All brands in the Asian stores in Seattle contain sugar or high-fructose corn syrup. The only one I've found that's just "water, organic rice, sea salt, koji" is Eden Mirin at Whole Foods ("product of Japan"), the one Derek is using. Do most mirins in Japan have sugar, or not?
Would love it if you would demo orange sauce or how to make a vegan version of orange chicken without mushrooms. Also a sweet and sour sauce to drizzle over veggie stir fry would be great. Love your videos! Thank you for making them.
After hearing about it from you, I vaguely remembered seeing it at Costco. The last time I went to Costco I went looking for it & there was none to be found. I'm in Ontario. Definitely worth making as it will be 100% healthier. Thanks!
It's everywhere where i am in the States but expensive for a much smaller bottle than the one you were holding. Thank you bc we use this sauce on soy curls when making poke bowls. It's really good and the healthier option is perfect! 10/10!
Thank you soooooooo much Derek! You are a life saver! I adore your videos! You are really inspiring and talented! I have been watching your videos since the beginning! Time goes by so so fast! ❤😂
Made the “Date” version yesterday. Ate it today in a stir fry. I added the rice wine, because I had it in the pantry. It was friggin awesome. Thanks so much for sharing your wisdom! From the left coast of 🇨🇦
this is great! and if u dont wanna blend up dates you can always try maple syrup ;) I love a good maple note in asian sauces with garlic and ginger it just is so good to me!
DEREK! I found a date syrup at Costco the other day! You can obvi use whole dates like you did in your recipe but I know a syrup can come in handy! It’s literally JUST 100% organic dates in syrup form! Keep your eye out for it! It’ll likely disappear just like this sauce did but.. worth a go anyway!😍
Yayyyy, so happy you took the time to deconstruct the recipe for the sauce. I havent seen this sauce in germany yet so am super happy to be able to make it at home now. Thank you so, so much 😃🥰
I’m definitely making the second one in our meal plan next week!! Thank you for sharing!! Video idea…could you show us how you use the instant pot for making up your own recipes? Is there a basic setting or method of dry to wet ingredients that you do?
I was having trouble finding this tahini salad dressing (Annies Goddess) and back in January I concocted my own version and after quite a bit of trial and error and persistence, I actually came up with a recipe that I like even better and I'm hooked on it. Not to mention it also saves a lot of money from buying the Annies. It's also a very fast and easy recipe. So lately I've been thinking of ways to reverse engineer some other sauces like the Iron Chef General Tso's sauce and something like the Organicville BBQ sauce. It's the best BBQ sauce in my opinion it's just harder to get and they don't sell it locally or anywhere near here.
I tried recreating the miso Bachan’s a few weeks ago for the reasons you mentioned as well as the price, and I was frustrated with the way it came out. Thank you for this amazing video!
I like how you break it down and explain your process 👍 1:42 you can substitute mirin with a cheap medium sherry. Personally I don't care for the sweetness of mirin and use chardonnay instead.
Great healthy version recreation. I have a soy sensitivity/allergy (I break out in bad rashes), so I can’t use this myself, (so obviously I also avoid all things soy, including ToFu). As I eat a whole food plant based diet myself. it would be nice if I didn’t react to soy, but it is what it is.
Awesome! I love this sauce 🤤 I’ve actually been wanting to ask if you could make a healthier “firecracker sauce”. I love it but it’s got 1/2 cup brown sugar in it. Thx in advance! (Recipe below) 1/2cup brown sugar 1/4 Buffalo sauce 2tbs rice vinegar 1tbs crushed red pepper 1tbs garlic powder 1tbs ginger powder Salt & pepper (there’s no measurements I just sprinkle some of both in haha)
I stocked up on Bachan's when it was on sale at Costco. Planned on experimenting to make my own before it runs out. Now I don't have too! Thanks for doing it for us 😊. Excited about the date version!
Hey I did try this and it turned out great! There is a dressing/dip/sauce that I cannot get where I live and I’m wondering if maybe one day you could give this one a shot and try to remake? It’s called Umami crave the fifth curried maple
Oooh yay! We love this sauce and stocked up on it while it was on sale at costco, but now of course it’s gone. Definitely gonna try the date version! ♥️👍
So way back when I was first cooking asian dishes, I couldn't figure out why my teriyaki sauce didn't taste more like takeout. Then I discovered mirin and that really made a big difference. It is a bit pricey, but it has become an important addition to many of my asian-inspired sauces.
I love this stuff! We put it on everything. I can get it easily here in the states, but it's still expensive. Looking forward to trying the homemade healthy version!
In Seattle I get it at Costco but I've seen it at a couple other stores. I bought it for a while but then stopped in order to focus on less-processed sauces (soy sauce). I make a comparable flavoring with 1 unit of mirin, 1 of rice vinegar, and 2 of soy sauce, but of course it doesn't have all the nuances of the flavor.
Can you maybe show some substitutes using umme plum for tart/ acid. I am allergic to vinegar and lemon juice doesn’t always sub. Maybe a paste to add to sauces? Super healthy!
I just recently bought that sauce for the first time. Yum! It will be interesting to try making a healthier version. Speaking of yum, have you ever had Cafe Yumm’s Yumm sauce? You can get it in Cafe Yumm & select grocery stores in the PNW US. So good - that would be a great one to deconstruct.
Bonjour! Fellow Canadian here 💪 from the Atlantic living in Ottawa :-) Im loving your videos man! Your petsonality, your products, the info you share. My girlfriend and I are learning good stuff -- and I actually found this Asian sauce today in Gatineau 😊 I would have maybe skipped it unless I seen your previous video using, but then I noticed it and thought of you being vegan and checked it out. Turns out the ingredients were pretty good -- and some organics ingredients. Im loving the tests. Im excited to see more healthy options we can get here in Canada. Thanks friend! ❤
Hey Derek, someone may have already asked this, but I didn’t see it…what about date syrup in place of the dates? How much would you suggest? I was thinking it might be a little thinner like the original, and possibly a little sweeter than with whole dates. 🤷🏼♀️😊 Thanks so much for this recipe, all your sauces are amazing!! 🤩
Thank you- I have always wished I could get hold of that sauce but living over in Europe I can’t find it anywhere. Can’t wait to try it! Thanks so so much for your efforts👍❤️💪
Perfect. I couldnt find anything like these sauces in Denmark. So this is perfect. I really would like you to make a video about different breadspreads like you can buy them. Often based on chickpeas or sunflowers with tastes like "Toscana", ...
Hi, How long is it good for in the fridge once made? Is it better to store it in an air tight jar vs a squeeze bottle (like the refillable condiment type). Thanks
BRUH…the timing of this video was perfect! I just finished up my Bachan’s Japanese BBQ sauce I got from Costco! And now I’ve got 2 versions to make!🔥 Seriously thank you so much for this recipe! Can’t wait to try it out! ALSO funniest part of the video is your reaction at 1:51!😳🤣
I don't know. I would think at least a week. But probably longer with all that sodium. First look for any mold, then smell for any weird smells, then a little taste to see if it tastes okay. If they all check out just giver.
By the way Trader Joe’s soy chorizo makes an amazing chili just sauté up some onions, peppers add a can of fire roasted tomatoes and some kidney beans.
Love your channel. Regarding your e books - Are the recipes printable as I prefer to read from paper rather than from a screen whenever possible. Hope one day you will write a cookbook. Thank you.
Thanks for healthy version recipes . If your local library has Thug Kitchen cookbook it’s worth checking out and trying their ginger-sesame tofu marinade as it has similar taste. That's one problem with Costco, things are there for a long time and then they are gone for months. They had the Primal Kitchen Avocado lime dressing. I finally was able to get it a couple of times. It has been gone for months. Right now is the Primal Kitchen buffalo sauce. I have to go to a store a half hour away to get it since Costco doesn't have it.
Hey Derek love this with the healthier version included! Is it true that a lot of sugar is still made with bone char in the whitening process because ew even if not trying to be healthy we don't want anything to do with that
Would love to know how to make the sunflower cookies and the snickerdoodle cookies from Trader Joe’s. They’re vegan and seem to have a pretty decent ingredient list, but I hate all the plastic packaging. Would love to figure out how to make them! Also, Simnett sauces are the best!! 🤘🏾
Mayonnaise, it is getting ready to be summer and I need a vegan version for tomato sandwiches, potato salad, etc. I like the way that you tell the whole story... With options for everybody 🙏
Yes pls!!!!!
Yes please 🎉
Mayo, yes! In past I've made homemade mayo but it takes eggs
Silken tofu blended works well for a sandwich spread, if you add some seasonings
Vegan mayo tastes gooood
Derik! This is epic. I was literally at my grocery store 1 hour ago and I ALMOST bought this because of how much you use it… I decided not to buy it because of the ingredients and the price… I’m so glad to be able to check out this tutorial thank you!! 🙏
Awesome, I hope you like my version :D
btw it’s Derek not Derik

My hero!!!! This sauce is so expensive here and obviously not the healthiest but soooo good. I kept meaning to write you to request a homemade version. Dream come true! You're the best!
i have never even heard of this sauce but now i wanna try it, which is exactly why we need videos like these, thanks man!
I just bought some of the og sauce and really just tastes like high quality ginger teriyaki sauce tbh. Definitely good but I've had it before in other brands.
I rushed to my kitchen to make your second version. It's fantastic! I don't have dates and used two small sweet apples. Thank you so much, Derek.
oh wow, apples are a great substitute. Glad you liked it!
I was going to ask about this. Korean bulgogi sauce uses Asian pear for sweetness. Cool to hear apples worked. What variety did you use?
I’m Japanese, so I’m glad to watch this!! Thank you as always!!

It’s true.
However, it is called hon-mirin, and most of the other types contain sugar and additives.
@@snoopy.358 Thanks. I found an article explaining hon-mirin and what it calls "mirin-like seasonings".
I love watching your videos with my mother.
Would love it if you would demo orange sauce or how to make a vegan version of orange chicken without mushrooms.
Also a sweet and sour sauce to drizzle over veggie stir fry would be great.
Love your videos!
Thank you for making them.
AGREED!!
Oh yeah I third this. No mushroom orange ‘chicken’ would be AMAZING.
Genius at work! Thanks for the healthier version. Much appreciated. 🙏🏻
After hearing about it from you, I vaguely remembered seeing it at Costco. The last time I went to Costco I went looking for it & there was none to be found. I'm in Ontario. Definitely worth making as it will be 100% healthier. Thanks!
The only place I’ve seen it is Amazon.
I especially like the use of fresh ingredients!!
I bought that bbq because of you I was literally using it every day it taste delicious when you added to crispy tofu.
it's so good!
It's everywhere where i am in the States but expensive for a much smaller bottle than the one you were holding. Thank you bc we use this sauce on soy curls when making poke bowls. It's really good and the healthier option is perfect! 10/10!
You’re the best Derek ! Thank you for doing the work for us !
Mirin substitute - medium sherry works great in all asian food - it is sweeter and heavier than sake.
Thanks so much for sharing your wisdom!

this is great! and if u dont wanna blend up dates you can always try maple syrup ;) I love a good maple note in asian sauces with garlic and ginger it just is so good to me!
Thank you for taking the time to make these healthier versions then so kindly sharing your wonderful recipes.
I think your twist with the dates will be the one I trye 😊
Amazing, the replica and the healthy version, thanks Derek!
I love this sauce! The Costco size one is in my fridge right now. I'm excited to make a healthier version, thank you for cracking the code!!!
I bought this brand because of you. In the US I get mine in Walmart. I recently bought the miso flavored one.👍🏾

Cool. Good to know. I live in Italy now so there is no Costco here though.
I'm glad I stayed until the end to see the date sauce because I almost left when I saw all the sugar at first! Good work, Derek. A+
So timely! I almost bought this at Costco the other day, now I can make the healthier version! Thank you, Derek! You never disappoint!❤
Wow, this was absolutely awesome! I was wiping out the pan with my fingers it was so good!
which version did you make?
The ones with dates. It was super easy and blended up quickly.@@sweetpotato1357

Ya it's very seasonal in Canada . Seem to find it in S. Florida Costco's . Awesome stuff.
This looks interesting, haven't seen it here in Spain so will be making some. You can never have enough sauces, thanks for sharing ❤
I tried recreating the miso Bachan’s a few weeks ago for the reasons you mentioned as well as the price, and I was frustrated with the way it came out. Thank you for this amazing video!

YES!! I've been looking for a good sauce-dressing with dates. Leave it to Simnett to come up with one. I cannot wait to make this. Top priority.
🤩AMAZING 🤩

Thank you for cracking it!! I have been wanting to make this.
Thanks for all the hard work in getting the recipe together.
Do you have any idea how long it would last in the fridge.
Great job! Thanks for figuring it out! 😊
My Costco in Ottawa never had this sauce 😅
You can always use date powder. I buy it from Amazon
Thanks for a great recipe!!!.Sounds like it will be a good alternative sauce. God bless you from grandma Katie in Oregon.

Thanks Derek! The sauce is still available at my Costco in Virginia, USA, but I’ll be making yours after I use it all up!
Thank you!! Its a great base for me to work around to make even more low sodium for my AHF heart!
Hello from Germany. Thanks for this recipe. This was so incredibly expensive i never bought it. Now i can make my own. Thanks 😊
I think my Costco still has that but it's great to create ur own and I love that u made a healthier version.

Thanks so much for this recipe. I bought some at Costco because of your recommendation, but I don’t usually like to eat gluten. 😊
In addition to this I’d love to see a vegan ‘Yum Yum’ sauce. Tangy mayo like condiment to drizzle on Asian foods (or any food!)
Hi. I made it and its really delicious. Do u know how long does it last in the fridge? Coz i made a lot. Thank you. Appreciate all your vids. 🙏🏼🎉
Can’t wait to try this sauce! Thanks for sharing your this recipe :)
It's also fantastic on MEAT!!
Sriracha, please! The healthiest brand I have seen which is not sample sized is Sky Valley but even that has cane sugar.
