I didn't really like it until I sat in one. The interior "atmosphere" is really comfortable and nice. It feels modern, yet sensible. For someone like me who LIKES spending time in a car but can't justify driving around in the most expensive car possible, this is a good alternative.
The main let down with the i40 is the autohold feature which automatically applies the handbrake when you come to a stop and firmly press the foot brake, but it disengages it as soon as you touch the accelerator. You are supposed to find clutch biting point first, but many people do not do that. It's hard to get used to and possibly dangerous even. The electronic handbrake is annoying in general, the stop start system never activates. The clutch system goes wrong on early cars (pre 2015 I think) and you have to upgrade the parts from Hyunda (about £220 for upgraded clutch pressure regulator and master cylinder). The gearbox is abit notchy, but made much better if you change fluid to redline mt85. There can be some rust bubbling through above the windscreen, and the various jubilee clips and bonnet catches seem to rust. Timing chain can rub on a part inside the engine casing, but it's unusual for it to either happen or it takes a very long time to cause serious damage. No cup holders as such in my one either. The good points are excellent flexible diesel engine with enough poke even in the low power model. Expect 38+mpg local, 48+normal motorway, 65+mpg nursing it on motorway. £30 to tax in the UK in manual form. Ride quality is lovely, seat comfort excellent, road noise low. Audio system is OK, has usb and Bluetooth which is easy to setup. Even the voice command call system works fairly well. Interior space is excellent. Handling is adequate. Its a car that would of been alot better had hyundai focused on the simple things and sold it for a lower price. Should of given it simple analog technology like a proper handbrake. We don't need auto lights, auto handbrake application, e handbrake, fog lights that come on when cornering, a tune that comes on when you start or shut down the car etc etc. And maybe they should of made all of them with a torque converter automatic seen as though the manuals and the DCT dual clutch automatic system both had issues.
10 years and 107 thousand later I can agree with that review and everything works still, drives well and still get great MPG. Only ouch was a offside rear brake caliper it was very expensive.
I don't deny that it's an interesting car with some good perks. But my biggest concern was where Mat pointed out that visibility (especially where the rear is concerned) isn't so great.
+eternalhalloween1 Loads of manufacturers do the same thing, sweep the rear metal upwards to make it more stylish, and slope the rear so it looks sporty, BUT you reduce rear visibility AND you reduce your usable luggage space. My old V70 was boxy and ugly, but visibility was awesome and the square rear end was designed for carrying stuff, which I did regularly. That's why I bought a wagon!!! That said, it's down ot this or the Mondeo for my next family car, with the Mondeo a nose in front before the wife and I test drive them. I'll be interested to see which car wins for us.
I am currently on my 2nd, they are an absolutely fantastic car, the sound system is amazing, especially if you turn up the bass in the sound settings and the sound gets even better when playing music over the Bluetooth audio!!
Paul Deasy I purchased a saloon in 2012 new and then bought another one in 2017. They are an absolutely brilliant car, they are extremely spacious inside, brilliant quality, lovely to drive. I currently have the SE Nav model and I think it is the perfect medium, it has all the kit you will need including Heated front seats as-well as heated steering wheel which are absolutely brilliant for winter, electric handbrake with auto hold, reversing camera which comes as standard with all models, the SE Nav models have front and rear parking sensors and I am extremely happy with it. The 1.7 Diesel 115 BHP I find is perfect, brilliant for all kinds of driving, good economy and performance. The car also has auto stop/start which helps to save fuel and is a useful feature. So I am personally thrilled with it and I would definitely recommend it. The saloon is brilliant and I’m sure the estate will be as amazing. So in my opinion they are a fantastic car. What year are you thinking?
I also bought a 2012 executive 1.7 136 sedan is very nice, but the suspension is a little hard, maybe the thickness of the tire sidewall is less so it feels uncomfortable on a little rough roads what is the thickness of your tire
this 1.7 crdi 65 mpg Engine is Banned on the U.S . 90% of fuel efficient cars are banned in the U.S I think you can get a i45 in the U.S with 2.4 turbocharged engine which can do 30 mpg
its so difficult to pick an estate now with this, the ford mondeo and the skoda superb being so close. i40 has the best guaranties and standard equipment for the lowest price, ford mondeo the best driving dynamics and all round best drive(and a new stunning model on the way might put a dent in the i40 and superb's sales stats.) while the skoda superb offers amazing space and quality feel for the money.. picking one is going to drive you maaad :)
My Hyundai i40 tourer 2011, is pulling to the left. And still pulling to the left after four wheel alignments by hyundai..! After googling the problem there are thousands of Hyundai customers talking about this fault online. I would be very happy with this car, if it could just find the road and wasn't actively seeking out poles and ditches to the left... Of course at Hyundai main dealership which I have gone to two, have said "that's strange we've never heard of that problem before" and still getting the excuses it's a safety feature or road camber.. Buyers Beware... I'm bringing mine back to the dealership again. If anyone has any solutions on this I'd be happy to hear them...🤦🏻♂️..?
AMAZING REVIEW! It would be amazing if you were a US Top Gear host, hell, you could be an original Top Gear presenter and make it better! When the Toyota GT86, or Subaru 86 comes out, you should review it!
hhmm, can't say I noticed much wind noise at all on the i40, love the cool blue dash lighting on our Elantra, perhaps you should have lowered the brightness, as for the interior quality Hyundai have excelled themselves with design, ergonomics and build quality.
theres so many strong points with the i40.. it's got good engines which doesn't cost a fortune to run, excellent ride, alot of space, quiet at speed, ALOT of equipment as standard, better warranties than pretty much any car in its range & the design is also way better than alot of its rivals (as long as you go for the bigger wheels, the ones in this review looks horrid) but I suspect it won't be so refreshing once the new mondeo comes out in 2013 some time. downsides, well. handling? thats it
i wish these hyundai's were in america. this would be the sonata hatchback n i would have no problem choosing this over the accord crosstour or toyota venza. the i30 or elantra touring is great too
Great car but clutches, master cylinders, regulators, and pressure plates are very problematic. Also the 5 year unlimited mileage warranty is a bit of a joke as something's such as clutch is only covered to 50k. I've had 2 and had alot of bother with each as have friends. Lovely car but too unreliable and dealers don't seem interested when you have repeated issues. Also Korean parts are an absolute fortune! 2.5k for clutch and flywheel vs £500 for my vw cc
At last someone mentions the clutch issues. We had to buy the upgraded clutch pressure regulator and clutch master cylinder for our 2014 model. They cost £220 from Hyundai, and we got a local independent mechanic to fit them for cheap. Been fine since but very annoying that hyundai designed it so poorly in that regard.
@@99ron30 poor reliability is the main reason it was dropped from uk market in 2019. I'm will never for near another Korean car. Everyone I know that had them has major problems and very expensive! Lesson learned for me. Stick to VAG
The side windows are so small that you feel like imprisoned :( Its incredibly dark inside ... Also the aggresive front dash woudl fit in some sport car but not in estate family car. And does it seems only to me or the front windows is also very small. At 1:16 it looks like the dash is incredibly tall compared to window.
Be aware buyers, some i40s have intermittent steering issues, pulling to the left It took Hyundai 5 wheel alignments to fix mine and its still not 100%
Romano i have same issue , first they said it need wheel alignement , after that they said it’s some mechanics in steering which may cost a lot of fortune so I have left it as it is .? How did u fixed yours ? Can u explain more
@aszkanfederation28 If you are correct, then the old Verna design should match with new one.But it was not. The new designs of Verna,(2011) , eon ,i10 are all now improved design which matches almost each other and they gave a little sporty look , unlike early models like Santro or sonata.
Well I don't see how going to school is supposed to be an insult to a COLLEGE student. You're probably done with school, my advice is to not using insults as your last ditch effort.
It looks very cool, but it is very big!I would like a car with the same looks, but smaller...I find the i30 to be ugly. Also, why doesn't hyundai put turbocharged engines in their cars?
Tested one today. Dynamic wise... Ok-ish. Interior however, feels really upmarket and nice to be in. In fact, I actually like it.
I'm definitely considering this car when I change my mark one Peugeot 308.

Everything you have said went wrong on my car 😂🙈
I hired the 1.7 diesel version a while ago and was extremely impressed with it, I'd buy one if I had the money
Hurray! I've always wanted to see a review of this car.
Exellent, Mat. As always :D
10 years and 107 thousand later I can agree with that review and everything works still, drives well and still get great MPG. Only ouch was a offside rear brake caliper it was very expensive.
Excellent review.
Certainly my pick of the estate cars, stunning good looks, space, quality interior, Hyundai can do no wrong!!

YES... This is the review I was waiting for 4 months :)))) Thanks Mat, you are full of epicness.
Matt, as usual a great video and review.
P.S: try make videos more often because we're all waiting unpatiently :)
Of course! This may be the most beautiful wagon ever designed.
no way
I don't deny that it's an interesting car with some good perks.
But my biggest concern was where Mat pointed out that visibility (especially where the rear is concerned) isn't so great.
Visibility isn't epic, but it in no way affects safety when driving unless you're useless.
***** I guess that's why a lot of the newer cars are coming equipped with rear view cameras as well as parking censors. :)
eternalhalloween1
I reckon people are just worse drivers nowadays, why a 3 door Fiesta needs backup sensors is beyond me.
***** Very possible.

I recommend buying this car it's amazing and the sound system is great aswell
Ghost Asf I think the sound system is actually quite shit :D otherwise nice car.
TheLeewi98 My dad has the 2015 model and the sound system is really good

As I heard The clutch and the DMF is a big issue with these cars. Some cases clutch needed to be replaced after 20k
Finally, hyundai and makinging very good looking cars :o)
@changke I'd say that it's always cloudy, it doesn't rain as often as you'd think though.
great review again Mat , You helped a lot to choose our next car!(no not Hyunday), many thanks!
Its a bloody good sports tourer.
Used 2012 Toyota Avensis vs 2012 Hyundai i40. Which one is better and more reliable?

@boy638 No, we don't have it yet - neither do we have Genesis saloon or coupe nor the Equus.

When the Toyota GT86, or Subaru 86 comes out, you should review it!
"In fact in terms of styling, you could argue they've edged ahead"
Sure their design studio full of Italians has.
This guy loves his storage cubbies.
I found the seats in the rear a bit too low, it made it a bit uncomfortable at times. But, there is still loads of room.
Yes, but those cars mentioned, Ford, VW aren't as reliable so given the trade off I'd take the i40
