  • Here we see a Royal Canadian Air Force Boeing CH-147F Chinook Helicopter 147301 visiting CZNL in Nelson, British Columbia. This video includes the full engine start-up procedure and the take off.
    It was very impressive to see this CH-47 Chinook twin-engine, tandem-rotor, heavy-lift helicopter of the RCAF visiting Nelson!!

    My son in the US Army had a massive TBI and was rehabbing at the Polytrauma Center in Tampa. Also there was an Army officer who took a bullet to the head while flying a Chinook in Afghanistan. I don't want to say his name, but if you're reading this, thank you for your service and looking after my son while in Tampa. You really helped him stay the course and positive.

    We (particularly us aviation nuts) are so accustomed to this and other helicopters it's almost commonplace, but if you step away then come back and view this thing like someone who's never seen one it is an ungodly contraption - huge spinning blades inter-meshing, the whole thing looking as heavy as a classroom building, making chopping noises that change in pitch and volume, blowing everything around it away before lifting into the air as effortlessly as a helium party balloon! What an amazing species we are that we can imagine and build something like this ...

    They pass my house on a regular basis in the village I live in The Netherlands. Last year there was a funeral of a retired helicopter squadron leader in a graveyard further in our street. A Chinook showed respect by doing a low pass over the graveyard and doing a 'wing-wave' which was pretty awesome!

    I can always tell when a Chinook is going to overfly my house by the super fast and deep egg beater sound. Once I saw a mixed squadron overfly of 4 and 4 blackhawks. Awesome engineering, over 50 years on.

  • @deanhayden8681
    @deanhayden8681 6 ปีที่แล้ว +130

    After the APU starts they set all of the avionics (radios, gps, altimeters), emergency system checks (engine fire handles/bottles), Hydraulic systems checks (2 main hydraulic systems) thats when you see the blades move up and down but not rotate, the blade pitch is controlled by hydraulics. Then you hear the #1 engine start, #2 engine start (both are also hydraulically started). Once both engines are started the ACFT is in "Ground" condition, all instruments for engines, transmissions, hydraulics, electronics are checked. Pilots are listening to the "tower information" which gives them wind speed, wind direction, altimeter settings and any notices to airman. Then the engines go to "flight" condition. After that any delay in take off is only getting/waiting for clearance from the tower for take off. The Canadian Army took delivery of those CH147F's in 2014, I believe they were all new build aircraft.

    • @laz288
      @laz288 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      hydraulically started? I did not know there was a system like that. I though the engine used bleed air from the APU or a already started engine?

      @danielseguin6389 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      how many chinooks do they have in the canadian forces Dean ?

    • @deanhayden8681
      @deanhayden8681 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@laz288 The APU supplies 3500 psi hydraulic pressure to start the engines. The 2 main hydraulic systems provide 3000 psi and you "can" start one engine off the other in a pinch but they require 3250 psi to start under normal conditions. The APU on the Chinook does not provide bleed air. The engines also do not provide bleed air for heating like many other helos, the Chinook has a stand alone heater that provides 200,000 BTU's per hour.

My memory of it was when the rotors engaged the vibration was really noticeable in the back then when it got to a certain rotor speed it went all smooth. Great aircraft and as we flew the back door was half open so you could see the scenery of South West Scotland passing by. In case you haven't noticed I'm right into helicopters, lol. Next day we were taken in a Super Puma low level through the glens to North Connell where we boarded a C-130 down to West Freugh near the border with England and back to Prestwick in a Wessex which I think equates to an S-58 in the US.

      I'm a Chinook Mechanic and the rotors are aligned or we call it "phasing the blades. One blade will be over the tunnel cover and one is pointing directly centered on the nose. the only way blades get out of phase is either a seized transmission or broken driveshaft. Either one of those situations occurs and the helicopter will crash regardless
