I really am pleased to find a sailing channel that provides information and unique scenery rather than some type of reality-TV format. The practical “how to” info on a range of topics is like gold! ; tips on sailing, fishing, cooking, provisioning, maintenance, ropework, etc. It’s just brilliant! Likewise are the insights into the history, biology, geology and weather of places you are visiting. I wonder if you would do more of a review of the pros and cons of Moorool’s behaviours in different points of sail and sea states. I ask because I’m seeing how relatively easily you appear to be helming in following seas. I struggle with a similar traditional 30ft boat; a significant difference being the rudder (barn door vertically hung on canoe stern). Regards, Russell

My favourite quote for the day: "Were just rounding a headland; there's a few rocks we'd prefer not to hit." Probably good advice for anyone travelling through life at the moment.

I got bruised, battered and a little shell shocked from cruising in Tassie. We ended up being scarred from rapid wind changes, massive gusts, really strange weather, localised downdrafts and poor holding and of course the worry of Bass Strait. We have cruised north 6 times and love bushwalking multi day treks in Tasmania, but I don't think we will ever sail to there again. I couldn't relax and our boat was a millstone around our necks. Whereas when cruising in Queensland a boat gives you the freedom to visit places no one else can visit, Tasmania has wonderful mountains in the distance, like Haartz mountains, Mt Field or Adamson's Peak and Mt Wellington, that we could not visit without putting our boat on a mooring, hiring a car and then being with all the people with cars. In onme instance we were trying to cruise the Dentrecasteu and it was blowing dogs off chains and there was snow on Adamson's Peak. In the end, we gave up, put the boat in the marina, hired a car and within 3 hours we were in the relative warmth of Bicheno with no wind and sunshine. Having fun instead of clenching my teeth with every gust.
Then again, there was one day - from St Helens to Schouten - never have I seen a mega pod of dolphins, clouds of sheawaters and flocks of albatross. Another highlight was the seal colony on the bottom of Bruny, we spent a couple of hours there just watching, amazing stuff. However, I will next visit Tassie by car, with backpacks in the back and sea kayaks on the roof and leave the cruising yacht at home. It pains me to say, but sometimes a boat is not the best way to travel.

I do like how you combine a lot of techniques that have fallen out of common use to free yourselves from frequent shopping, like; pickling, sprouting, live culture yogurt, kimchi, sour dough baking...

I use aloe vera as sunscreen - from the plant not a bottle. I haven't used chemical sunscreen in over a decade and I may have gotten semi burnt twice then applied aloe vera again to help with healing and its fixed- no chemicals :) It has to be applied every couple of hours though and does not last long when swimming maybe an hour before needing reapplication.

Not sure if it was the new recording equipment you have, but the sound of that wind , you could of been a lot further south! but what made it weird for me was the zinkoxide and the hat and not the usual palm trees rustling in the background.
