I know that all the Gospel Marys can be confusing sometimes, but the story in John 12 clearly refers to Mary, the sister of Lazarus and Martha, not Mary Magdalene. Still, this is powerful stuff. As a Gospel message it's not about wasting money, but that service for Jesus is completely priceless. Sydney Carter's penultimate verse also references Matthew 25:40. Thanks for posting this; I rediscovered it this year after a 30 year lapse. Beautiful.

I'm well aware of the accounts in Luke but the Luke 7 story has no mention of Judas, nor is the name of the woman given, though traditionally it was thought to be Mary of Magdala. Likewise the Luke 10 story, set at the Bethany home, has no mention of oils nor is Judas named (though we suppose he was there). Of the 3 Biblical accounts, Carter's song is clearly a setting of the John 12 and is about Mary of Bethany. Love and Peace x

It was Mary of Bethany that's correct!

Luke 7 & John 12 are distinct events, with some shared features. Mary of Bethany/ Luke 10 learns at Jesus' feet, & in John 12 is a worshipping saint. In Luke 7 a repentant sinful woman receives salvation, forgiveness, &peace from the Lord's own lips in Simon's home. The Luke 7 woman is a "500 pence" debtor, who uses tears to wash, hair to dry& *then* myrrh. Mary - a "300 pence" worshipper, uses costly pure nard to anoint, then wipes: no wash, no hair. It is indeed she Judas argues with.
