  • *Ireland has four provinces; Leinster (East), Ulster (North), Munster(South) and Connacht (Irish) or Connaught (English) is in the West of Ireland, where many parts were considered poor for farming etc.
    Rothe House is a restored late 16th-century merchant's townhouse complex located in the city of Kilkenny. The complex was built between 1594-1610 and is made up of three houses, three enclosed courtyards, and a large reconstructed garden with orchard. The Rothes were thought to have been involved with the Confederation of Kilkenny; formed as a provisional government to protect the Catholic religion. For this they would pay, when Oliver Cromwell would seek revenge on the Irish for their support of the Royalists during the English civil war.
    The house is the only remaining example of a complete burgage plot in Ireland and considered to be nationally significant because of the range of original post-medieval features that survive. The property is owned by the Kilkenny Archaeological Society and acts as a museum, which is open to the public.
    The garden to the rear of the house has been reconstructed to reflect a typical 17th-century garden. Kilkenny's medieval city wall forms part of the House complex.

    Welcome to my channel, that is dedicated to the history and culture of Ireland.This is not set out to be a history lesson, but a ramble through some stories you might find interesting about Ireland from an Irishman! Ireland has so many connections throughout the world from the emigration from this country over so many centuries, but those with Irish blood in their families always have a yearning to know more about their "old country", this is my attempt to bring some of the history and culture they left behind. So if you fancy some tales about horsemen and highwaymen, banshee's and fairies, soldiers and rebels, legends and folklore, saints and scholars, please like and subscribe. I post once per month. Thank you for watching. Ronan.

    Thanks so much for this. I've been trying to wrap my brain around this particular historical period, and this video just clarified in a few minutes, what hours of reading couldn't.

    Very interesting. I'm American of Irish, Scots-Irish, Czech and Welsh descent. Most of my ancestors moved to America for economic reasons but my Catholic Welsh ancestors became so-called Cavaliers in the Catholic Maryland colony, coming to America right after the English Civil War. It seems they were people of substance as they brought some very nice furniture with them, my favorite being a Gentleman's Sword Chair, a chair where one of the legs sits between the gentleman's legs such that he could sit there with his sword still strapped on. The indication is that Cromwell made the whole area uninhabitable for Catholics.

      Thanks for the input, yes there was great persecution of the Catholic faith at this time.

      Cromwell and his army massacred whereever they went, his intention was not to make catholics uncomfortable and submissive to a brit crown, it was to massacre and genocide tje irish catholics , majority of them descendants of the old Gaelic order who held righteous and ancestral inheritance to the land of Ireland. He was a beast and all who fought evidence to him.

      Oh and it has never happened in reverse has it ? Not one Catholic-and certainly not it's leaders ! - have ever done anything similar . And before you accuse me of being a raging Prot, I am not . I do not follow any organised body that describes itself as a " religion " .

      Thanks for the compliment, TBH I'm not sure of the links with the Rothschilds but enjoy your trip to Kilkenny, worth doing some research first to appreciate the ground you walk on, as I walked the house, I couldn't help thinking about the family angst as the Cromwell forces approached!

    There's a street, a building and a rifle range named Connaught over here in Ottawa. I wonder if it references Connacht?

    • @primalireland-histcult
      @primalireland-histcult  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes it does, there are two spellings, the first one you have is how the English would spell it, the second is accepted as the Irish way.

      Connaught is the Irish language version, Connacht is the English language version.
      Connaught is original, native you could say👍

      @@primalireland-histcultWe pronounce Rothe house Row-th house here in Kilkenny not as you pronounce it but I think they try to pronounce an English name just with an Irish sound so it's sounds stupid. The Roth's been around gathering wealth a long time.
