Terry ,Kilkenny beat Kildare in the League just before Micko arrived.Micko often referred to that when he brought us to a league final and the 1998 All Ireland. In the 70s Dublin arrived in Kilkenny to Play them in the league or O’Byrne cup match. There was a good crowed on their way to the Ground which surprised the Dubs. The curtain raiser to this game was a minor hurling league final between to local clubs. When this game was over only ca a hundred people remained for to see the Dubs. The Kilkenny people had no interest in Football even when Heffo’s Army was playing.
To be fair Marble City bar would be more known for it’s food than as a drinking pub. The Left Bank, the Blue Bar or J.B Burke’s would have had it on and a crowd. As a northern in KK there’s plenty of footballing ability down here but the small ball takes priorty as you would expect.
I understand the most popular sport in Kilkenny a hundred years ago was, ... cricket ! Big changes in Ireland over that time from every angle, politics, economics, social, religious, ... it's a different world. I think that hotel was Greg Flannery's before being redeveloped, ... the Carmel Hotel or something like that ? Thank you, I enjoy your video's.
Not surprised regarding the attitude there to football. A few years back a friend of mine was based in KK & was inveigled into taking over their Senior side he had his doubts but hoped to establish a base. Three months later he rang me & said I am telling the Board I am quitting & said the immortal ''they wouldn't kick snow off a rope''
Ah Terry, the same happen to me recently in an Aldi. Came to €20.20 and I had a €50 note, so to avoid the change I gave her another 50c. She proceeded to give me back the 50c and then a bucket load of change. My brain couldn't compute what was happening; neither could hers it seems!
