Marco Venustus It's one of those things where it's literally cheaper to buy a Defender overseas and import it. Defenders in Britain can be had for $2k easily, even less if you really look
BeardedBrawler I am sure the Jeep with 300,000 miles is now a good contender reliability wise for a new Defender. Which will break first? We already know Doug's Range Rover has been less than trouble free.
Haha, except I doubt anyone other than maybe Land Rover dealer would give you a bumper-to-bumper warranty on a used Land Rover. CarMax must have lost their asses on Doug's Range Rover.
BG Customs Nothing a few wood staples and some duct tape can't solve lol. For $300 and putting $1400 into it, that's as good as you're gonna get dude. I can't think of another vehicles that would match that in terms of price capability and condition.
John Doe I get it. The point is he's got another problem if the roof is leaking to the point the headliner is stained like that.... and without a sunroof no less.
When I was 19, I had a cherokee. One day at the sand pit/shooting range, some dudes with everything overbuilt Chevy's challenged me to make it up the hill climb that had just taken them several attempts. Me, in a stock ride, stock treads, five speed made it up on the first pass. NEVER underestimate a cherokee! 14 years later, I just bought another one, they due hard!
This should be in the greatest hits category. I was looking back to see how long I’ve been watching. I didn’t realize it was almost the beginning. Thanks for the many years of greatness!
I think your highly underestimating the advantage of lockers, in your jeep, when your off-road, you will only have 1 tire in the front, and 1 in the rear being powered, but he will have all 4 tires powered. Locking differentials make night and day difference in off-road capability.
True, but I think the challenge was also how much less he spent compared to Doug. Plus I'm pretty sure that barring intensive uphill rock climbing the Jeep will manage to pull through.
I'd love to see a drag race between the Jeep and the Defender. I already know what the outcome would be (Jeep wins by a considerable margin), but the look on Doug's face would be priceless.
He's got auto and brakes. I've also seen people with 2wd outwheel people with lockers. If he's good enough driver and better than his editor he has a good chance of beating him.
Headliner is a bit of a pain, too. It takes quite a while of scrubbing with a grill brush on the fiberglass roof panel once you take the headliner off. She does look sharp, though! I highly recommend you get the Hella headlight upgrade that you can get from Amazon for around $100 or so. Way better than stock and road legal.
Doug could have bough 41 Jeep Cherokee's for the price of that overpriced Defender.. Luckily he showed that himself when comparing it to a similarly priced '13 Range Rover in his last video.
I just finished doing the same thing with a 2000 WJ, which had 220K miles. I spent $900 CAD on the car with a bad motor. I knew the engine was going that's why the cost was so low. The Jeep had very little rust, 2" lift, 2" spacers, winch and other goodies. Sure enough the motor blew a month later. So i replaced: - motor - brakes (rotors, pads, brake lines, calipers) - new 31" all terrain tires - shocks - CV boots - muffler fix - differential oils - some rust fix So now I'm $5300 total into it ($3870 USD) but i have a perfectly running Jeep with many new parts :) I could also sell it for what I have into it too, so im happy with it. Love these old jeeps.
Depends on your point of view. You can buy new for around $25,000 or you can sink under ten grand into your current rig and come out with a great machine that is cheaper to license and insure... AND no car payments. But if you like that new car smell... Frankly, I like vehicles where I can open the hood and actually see the engine.
Those 4 litre straight 6 engines were insanely reliable. I did 280,000 miles in mine and it was still good. I had taken it apart at 150,000 miles and it had no measurable wear. It was the best car I ever had, and if they still made something like it today I'd buy one like a shot instead of my car-like 2007 Grand Cherokee. The weak point was rusting roof - hence his headlining problem, like mine.
You have done well on this, and very smartly, I applaud you! I used to own a transmission shop in Florida, and I have grown a bitter hatred toward Land Rover/Range Rover more than any other car manufacturer. Why? You can just forget about taking a trip to Pep Boys if you need to replace a simple part. Not even Mercedes, BMW, or VW are as bad as these guys. On one occasion, I can recall not being able to replace a faulty transmission sensor for a customer's Freelander. Land Rover doesn't sell them, you have to buy a new transmission for over $6000! Fortunately and by a miracle, I was able to locate one off a recent wreck and save the poor guy a considerable fortune. The guy was so ecstatic, he called them to say he wasn't going to buy a new transmission, after all. Can you believe the nerve that the people from Land Rover actually called me, demanding to know how I got a hold of a sensor? I was very polite in saying NOYB, while restraining myself from telling them something else. Quite simply, an overrated and grossly expensive set of wheels in my judgement!
I know this was posted awhile ago but I just started to watch your channel and this Jeep Cherokee is what caught my attention. I just bought a 97 4 door automatic 2 wd for 200 dollars. the Jeep has 150k miles but the engine is less than 2 years old and a rebuild. the previous owner said it had a blown head gasket and he didn't want to waist his time fixing it. well it's not a head gasket, it's the head itself. so I'm going to pony up 480 dollars for a new cast iron head that is far superior to the aluminum head that the factory put on it.... I hope this makes a stronger and longer lasting motor
YES! I want the 70 000 $ Land Rover vs 1 700 $ Jeep challenge. First a review of the cars quirks and features. Then challenges including off road obstacles, 0-60 drag race etc. Finally a review of the two owners quirks and features. Bring it on.
LMAO those cows thought 'WTF?!' haha Another great video, you're one of my new favourites on TH-cam! Had Doug taken up the challenge yet? Maybe you should drive over another crappy Audi! That I would LOVE to see!!!
Jeep guy here...you can staple that headliner back to the roof with a regular old office stapler. I couldn't stand having that thing in my face all the time. It's an old trick used by taxicab fleet owners. Oooorrr...you might be able to find a headliner, or an interior shop who could restore it, all depending on how much time and money you want to spend.
I keep seeing comments about wondering where he gets all his money to this. I'm assuming it's part of his job with Autotrader and the Oversteer section of their website. Drive traffic to the website using fun and entertaining TH-cam videos. It's a good and proven strategy. So while he jokes about crippling debt, you have to realize that a lot of the money probably comes from a budget within the Oversteer website to make these videos. While I'm sure he has a lot of freedom to make what he wants in the videos, I'm assuming this is primarily a job for him, which is pretty sweet. It's just interesting to me when I see comments about "how can he afford all this?" but people don't connect the dots and don't notice he references the website and to always go check it out.
My first car was a 99 Jeep Cherokee with 188,500 miles on it. Bought it for 1400$. I put a 4.5 inch lift kit some 31 inch tires on 16 inch wheels. Only problem(s) Ive ever had is no heat, and the crank shaft sensor needed replaced. But I Still drive it (my profile picture) I love it!
97+ fix er upper Cherokees are one of the best values in an offroad vehicles. The aftermarket support is everywhere, parts are cheap, and they are easy to work on. The AW-4 is bombproof the NP231 is kick arse, and most of them don't have the putrid Dana 35. The pushrod 4.0 is even ok for offroad torque.
that 3 inch kit you got hopefully came with an adapter bracket or longer track bar as it makes your front axle move towards the rear and also moves it over towards the passenger side about 2 inches, the track bar and trailing arms need to be lengthened as you raise it up.
The cows be like - "Guys there some kinda mental ill homosapien on loose better watch ya baks and the hell outta here before he starts making more weird noises". Also cows - Run (music playing)
Sounds like a smack-down in the mid-west could be in the works. To get the edge over the Defender, you might just have to include some farm chores like milking cows and baling hay and add them to the typical truck feats.
Doug will win the challenge because of the diff locker. Just add a $250 lockrite to the Jeep and you'll be right there with him. Or better yet a $1500 ARB rear locker.
I can't wait for Doug to tell us about Hoovies weird quirks and features.
Matthew Z you'll have to read about it on autotrader.com/oversteer
Matthew Z You'll only get to see more of his thoughts on a u t o s t e e r . c o m / o v e r t r a d e r
Matthew Z "and yes, there are many of them"😂
😂😂😂😂😂
Subscribing to this channel was a good life decision.
I waaaaant to see the cheeroke vs defender video
Yes, one is 200 times as expensive as the other.
actually only like 41x more expensive!!
Jessie Ferreira Only? Jajaja
Yes
Marco Venustus It's one of those things where it's literally cheaper to buy a Defender overseas and import it. Defenders in Britain can be had for $2k easily, even less if you really look
Yes please lets this challenge happen. It'll make for great entertainment.
BeardedBrawler I am sure the Jeep with 300,000 miles is now a good contender reliability wise for a new Defender. Which will break first? We already know Doug's Range Rover has been less than trouble free.
Kevin MacNutt that's why every Land Rover ownet should get a bumper-to-bumper warranty!
Haha, except I doubt anyone other than maybe Land Rover dealer would give you a bumper-to-bumper warranty on a used Land Rover. CarMax must have lost their asses on Doug's Range Rover.
playing moo cow while wearing a leather jacket? no wonder they looked concerned! :-D
"It's good as new" he says with a stained, saggy headliner literally 4" from his head.
BG Customs 360k miles, but no worries, 1700 was worth sinking into it!
That would drive me nuts. One of the first things I would have done is find a good headliner at a pick-n-pull.
Just buy a new headliner,
Your headliner needs emptying
Probably keeps his stash up there. Explains his behavior hahaha
hes funny as hell but wtf is up with that voice
This channel is one of the rare, justifiable exceptions to click on that bell icon.
ya same here
My money is on the jeep. The defender is no match. He doesn't even have air conditioning! Savage!
1963 continental have you seen the panel gaps on a 90? One thing it doesn't need is air con.
definitely true.
Uniroyal Mish Well actually they are both 4.0Ls the Land Rover is a v8 instead of a i6 though
and moo man's Jeep has a real roof.
woah, only $45 labor to install the starter!? you found a good one, that mechanic is a keeper.
John e Is Kansas...
Those cows are like "LOL there's the idiot from oversteer, let's get the fuck outta here"
When I was 19, I had a cherokee. This is better than American Top Gear.
This is better than The Grand Tour, by far. Hoovie's actually funny, unlike those 3 imbecilic wankers, passing themselves off as car journalists.
No way Top Gear USA and The Grand Tour are way better. But that is to be expected because they are professional shows with big budgets
I'd rather walk around during a cat 5 hurricane then watch top gear America lol... Would be more entertaining
emathew97 everything is
Ha! Funny seeing Tyler scare the cows away. I wish I’d found a Cherokee like that for $300.
Before and after repairs that's a damn good deal
Right on! But that headliner would drive me nuts!
It's basically having 2wd vs 4wd
True, but I think the challenge was also how much less he spent compared to Doug.
Plus I'm pretty sure that barring intensive uphill rock climbing the Jeep will manage to pull through.
I'd love to see a drag race between the Jeep and the Defender. I already know what the outcome would be (Jeep wins by a considerable margin), but the look on Doug's face would be priceless.
Great videos! My parents had an 86 Cherokee that they sold with 280k miles and they still drive a 97 Cherokee with 215k miles.
That ending is legendary.
lockers take 4x4s to a whole nother level, dont bring a dull knife to a knife fight,
destroyeverything34 how much would locking diffs cost for that car?
he's spent money on worse :P
He's got auto and brakes. I've also seen people with 2wd outwheel people with lockers. If he's good enough driver and better than his editor he has a good chance of beating him.
What if the guy with a sharp knife doesn't know how to knife fight?
always assume your adversaries are as well or better prepared than you are
God I Fucking love this channel!! and that is one of my favourite cars! Have a sweet spot for Cherokees
i love these videos, this guy is funny as hell without being cheesy.
kevin soos really, I thought he was funny for the excessive cheese 🧀
Not compared to his boss
I agree, this guy is watchable and certain other people named Doug are totally unwatchable.
Are you sure about that?
the 3 inch rough county lift is freaking awesome for jeeps. Highly recommend
This has become my favorite car video channel
Fix your damn headliner!
Gosh dang I laughed so hard when your camera fell over. "And good byyyeee!" You're hilarious man.
I love your videos and are glad to see that your channel is gaining some traction!
Keep up the good work.

I highly recommend you get the Hella headlight upgrade that you can get from Amazon for around $100 or so. Way better than stock and road legal.
They should do some Top Gear style challenges together to see if the Cherokee is as good as the Defender
You're starting to become one of my favourite youtubers, love you content!!

I don't like most people but your channel is great! keep up the good work
That roof liner though... and Mooooooo! One awesome channel
This channel is underrated
Love the build, see forward to the next episode, subbed :)
Love your channel. Reminds me of spending my summers in Newton.
You can always install a mini-spool in the rear for that offroad challenge.
Then remove it and reinstall the spiders when done. Quick and simple.
I don't know if anyone else got it, but i loved the "Dodgeball" reference!!! Can't wait for the Doug/Defender cameo
Your videos are very entertaining. Please don't break this car!!!
I have a 94 GC and I've been fixing it and it's so worth it. less issues then a new car that I own.
The whole video is great and funny, but the ending is beyond hilarious!
You have done well on this, and very smartly, I applaud you! Awesome as always can't wait to watch this play out.
your vids r worth every second!!!
Doug it's going to be running like those cows at the end! Lol
Dude you shoot some awesome shots
I love it! I have had 3 Cherokees (at the same time) and when your XJ was at the shop it was parked next to my car...04 Deville DHS, same colour too!
I know this was posted awhile ago but I just started to watch your channel and this Jeep Cherokee is what caught my attention. bro you deserve more subs lolll
my 800 dollar jeep never let me down. the harder you drive it the better it runs
MOO!!! on every doug video, we must
YES! I want the 70 000 $ Land Rover vs 1 700 $ Jeep challenge. First a review of the cars quirks and features. Then challenges including off road obstacles, 0-60 drag race etc. Finally a review of the two owners quirks and features. Bring it on.

Had a farmer friend tell me that is how you get a date on the farm. The cows must not think you are handsome enough.
dafuq Hoovie
OHHHH A DOUBLE DOG DARE!
I think you mean Double Doug Dare.
It's not official, it doesn't have a bumper to bumper unlimited mile warranty.
Voug Diper
Lol the cow's at the end 4:07 even realize how weird he is. They're like NOOO RUNNNNN

It's so cool you're from Wichita! Derby Ks checking in.
I love Doug and you my sir have earned a new sub (:
Love these old jeeps. I'm on the look out for a clean ZJ Grand Cherokee for my next car.
I like the way you scared the cows away in the end. They didn't seem to care much about you or your Cherokee.

3:44 I exploded in laughter.
I laughed for about 5 minutes after this happened.
And goodbye, my stomach hurt I was laughing so hard, so happy I found your channel
The defender doesn't have locking diffs, it just has one in center, which makes it perform the same as a part time 4wd system in 4high or low
Hoovie your a good guy for repairing that jeep just give it to someone who needs it and you'll be a fantastic guy too someone out there 👍
Can't believe I've only just found this channel. Now instead of wishing Doug still made fun videos I can just watch these instead. Yaay
The Car Wizard just needs to be on the payroll lol. Many cars, One customer.
Did you put new leaf springs on the back with that RC suspension upgrade?
This dude is quite interesting. Great content!
Love the quick shot of Wizard
Can't wait to see the off road battle.
Gosh. I can not stop laughing, when you speak. Talking to the 🐄 was the icing on the cake.
that 3 inch kit you got hopefully came with an adapter bracket or longer track bar as it makes your front axle move towards the rear and also moves it over towards the passenger side about 2 inches, the track bar and trailing arms need to be lengthened as you raise it up.

"Aaaand goodbye!" Haha laughed so hard there :D
I feel like I now have a face for that voice in my head that, on seeing an ad for a $400 old car, says, "get it! You can't lose!"
You deserve more subs :)
Loved that camera topple.
"It only cost ABOUT......96 dollars and 69 cents."
Doug will win the challenge because of the diff locker. Just add a $250 lockrite to the Jeep and you'll be right there with him. Or better yet a $1500 ARB rear locker.
those cows are like "why is he telling us to go over there."
cows: " hey Bob you see anything over there?"
this challenge will certainly be better than the recent bisforbuild vs tavarish
Your TH-cam videos man they are dankkk
Awesome, I love this model
The start of Car Wizard. 👍🇺🇸👍🇺🇸
Doug should start refrencing hoovie like the crooners used to on their radio show
This guy's voice is perfect... Please speak at my funeral..
I like these jeeps. On a budget they are great. Minus the MPG of the good ole 4.0L
"Lazer! BLAZER!"
"Nobody makes me bleed my own blood!"
