  • In this video, I complete the build of the mobile chicken coop by adding the watering system. The system consists of rain collection from the roof to a 16 gallon storage tank inside. The tank then feeds the auto-filling bell waterer mounted on the outside of the coop.
    Specialty Items I used for watering system:
    1 1/2 Inch Bulkhead - amzn.to/3rS8hXE
    Bulkhead Strainer - amzn.to/3rS80E6
    16 Gallon Water Tank - amzn.to/2PPX5gZ

    If algae becomes a problem in the tank, you could try running a strip of duct tape up the middle of the bottom of the tank before painting it. That should leave a smaller "window" for light to get in the tank while at the same time allowing you to see the water level.

    Those will be some spoiled chickens !
    Pipe hanging tape to support the PVC "Roost".
    Zip tie an old piece of teeshirt over your vent pipe or mosquitos will fly in.
    To keep out smaller gutter debris you can slip a sock over strainer. - Hopefully a washed sock. -KJ

    If you put RV levels on the front and side of the coop (making sure the coop is actually level before you apply them), you can quickly and easily level the coop every time you move it to a new location. Then, you will never have to worry about whether or not your drainage system is getting water. Great design and build BTW! That's the nicest (and best designed) chicken coop I've ever seen.

    • @bobcriss600
      @bobcriss600 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      RV levels,am very sure, are quite insufficient for the task on probably 90% of Troy’s property.

    • @billmandaue2168
      @billmandaue2168 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bobcriss600 The kind of level I'm talking about is the little bubble levels that allow you to judge where level is. I seriously doubt there is anyplace on the property where he would park the coop that bubble levels wouldn't help in leveling the coop. He built the coop light enough that he can probably use shims of some sort to raise one side or the other to level the coop.

    Very nice...... just leave a 1 inch wide strip unpainted on the water tank so you can see the level.

    Nice build. You mentioned a possibility of having to fill the tank yourself when rainwater is scarce... you could always dual-purpose the overflow vent as a manual filling point, too.

    Maybe make a set of wheel chocks you can hang on the side when moving the coop. Could just leave a 1 to 2 inch vertical strip unpainted on the forward end of tank as a sight gauge. Very enjoyable build series, thanks for sharing it!

    Paint the bottom part black as will only leave a 1-2" stripe unpainted. I use painter's tape and with a black sharpie I do make some marks so visually I can estimate how much I got in the tank. So like every 5 Gallon on your small tank is more than enough.

  • @Bass2010

    If you put a Strip of tape down the middle of the water tank then paint it then remove the tape then you have a fill strip you can see were the water level is

    That's a cool water system you rigged up there, Troy! I was surprised though, that the roost bars are out in the open instead of back in the part that has solid walls to block the wind. Will your chickens like roosting in the open like that? I will stay tuned to find out! :-)

    I really love how this came together. Thanks for sharing all the details, Troy! I found a cheap junk trailer on Craigslist that I'll be able to use to make a very similar mobile coop. It actually has a light steel frame, forming a box about 5 feet tall, so I'm hoping it comes together with minimal framing.

    This isn't a troll, it's a genuine question. I just can't wrap my head around why so many people are pursuing this rural lifestyle. 100 years ago I would get it; but now? Living a "rural" or what many TH-cam channels call a "simple" lifestyle is far more expensive than "normal" Western life in nearly all circumstances. Land prices have been skyrocketing for a generation. Raising your own livestock is generally a horrible value proposition, even compared to purchasing organic $$ food. It requires an incredible investment in time, energy, etc. All for what? So that your standard of living is roughly the same as it was for people 100 years ago? What am I missing? Do you really get *that* much satisfaction from growing your own food as opposed to going to the farmers market?

    • @lobotomise863
      @lobotomise863 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Probably depend on the people for the reason but many are more autonomous that way... They don't have to depend that much on some else for food, water, electricity... Organic food in the store... based on what... what the seller in telling you? lol... good luck with that buddy... Raising price of land... and you think the price in a city for a piece of land did not raise too? Are you living under a rock or something like that? The price of housing is most of the time only raising and at the moment at least around here we have more demand than offer so guess what... the price are even more ridiculous... Not only that but the price of land or house near the better place in town have skyrocketed even more so yeah people go away from city to get lower price for a piece of land and a bigger one too...
      Anyway for many it's way be away from the idiot around them and get some space... i mean in today world at least around here you can't fart without your next door neighborhood knowing about it because the house/apartment are too close to each other... Not only that but because you are in a city many thing can't be done because of city rules, lack of space, etc...

      It’s all well and good to rely on a job, a paycheck, and a farmer’s market when times are good, but it’s too late to decide to raise your own food , when there’re no jobs, no paychecks, and no farmer’s market.

      I appreciate your question.
      We are trying to make our own food that avoids all the poisons. It is not the GMOs, it is all the poisons that are used.
      Even at a farmers market, unless you know the farmer, you do not know their growing practices. My local farmers market has a few individuals that are buying vegetables wholesale and re-selling for a profit. They are not supposed to, but it happens.
      It is much more peaceful with my cows, pigs, garden and forest that anything I have done it my life.

Some day I hope farms like yours will be in every county across our great country again... I got a nice looking rib roast and a leg of lamb for the day. Good thing spices and my Traeger will save the day for flavor... Thinking of all the farmers that made our meal possible. Thank you!
