Can you verify with the Ronbus owner when he will be publicly announcing the release date? Thank you.
For me, hard to say at this point. The Shapeshifter is still my go-to for drilling, etc. And the Ripple plays amazing, but I need to know if there's a break-in period where the paddle gets hotter. I wouldn't want to main something that is too hot

At the moment, I have 4 in my bag -- no primary (who can have just one?!?). Just depends on what's going on. Those are: Ripple (power/pop), Monarch Control (all court, leaning control), Chorus (all court), and the Body Helix X4 (spin/power)
@@douglasmurdoch7247 they are actually very close in performance, and I’m good with either. For me though, the control has a little more pop, making it feel more lively.

Try a materials/manufacturing lab instead of medical facility to find x-ray or microCT. Many manufacturing facilities use radiography for quality assurance.
Great podcast as always ! FYI I got and played the last 2 days the gen 3s scorpeus Collin Johns . I didn’t feel any difference in terms of power compare to the banned gen 3! And that’s supposedly the less powerful… I have the mod as well and the previous model
Just curious if you prefer the 1/2 gram per inch versus 1 gram per inch tugsten tape, and why. Love your breakdown of things, so I'd like to hear your ideas on paddle performance with lead application.
Looking forward to the NEXUS ProStar Foam filled core cells and a TI/carbon face. My question about PP is how these foam being used, adheres to the PP. Will it separate over time with impact, temps, etc. With so many companies using foam in the cores, this is yet to be seen. I'm with you John about PP core specs. OM claims to have their core material "specially" made for them.???
Good point about the foam adhesion to polymer. That seems to be the potential Achilles heel of Gen-3 paddles. For the JOOLAs, my theory is that the polymer core becomes corrupted near the interface with the foam due to too much flexion (that's where the trampoline effect is most significant). So that may not be an issue with the Nexus, given that it's just foam-injected polymer cells.
Curious how the Ripple compares to one of the other poppy paddles you both liked - The Thrive Azul. Did either of you get to hit at 16mm version of the Ripple?
Hey Jon, I am curious which paddle is currently your main. Also how do you have it set up? I keep trying to find a widebody/standard to replace my M2F 16mm but just can’t find something that feels as goood!
You may want to try the 11six24 Jelly Bean. I moved to this paddle from the M2 Forza. Excellent control, great forgiveness and fiberglass layer gives it much more pop/power than the M2 Forza.
John, regarding SLYCE CAP, I removed (original) butt cap on a 14mm Pikkl Hurricane. Had to remove a plethora of annoying nails AND staples , like 6 fasteners in total 😮😮. Never been able to properly secure either SLYCE cap or even re-install the original PIKKL cap (in frustration ) using recommended methods without it eventually loosening up (initially ever so slightly then it gets worse over time ) . My Question is what type of glue should I apply to the end of my Hurricane to stop this annoying slippage . (Yes, I’ve also been using plenty of athletic tape which helps but doesn’t fix problem.
I use epoxy. but warning- once it’s on there, it’s on for good. Best to try the slyce cap first, even if it’s a little loose, before gluing it down, to see if you like it.
I’ve used athletic tape to secure, however, after playing several games and sweating the Slyce tends to loosen. It’s enough to be distracting and interfere with any benefits the Slyce yields. I can’t commit to using an epoxy like JB wield to permanently affix the Slyce to the paddle. The B&B Shogun I used a Slyce “S13” and it fits very snug it’s not coming off.
I have a J2K. It’s great but the power/pop isn’t as great as the stability and spin is. If I wanted something that’s still easy to control, has spin, but has some more power/pop what would you suggest? Others have suggested the Ruby, Shapeshifter, and the Mark One.
@@johnkewpickleball thanks, I'm debating ordering the beta b/c things could change with production but all the reviews I'm seeing make this an intriguing paddle. Kinda surprised you seem to prefer the R2 over the R1. I've always gone with R1 but the characteristics you mention make the R2 a better choice for me.
Hi John, I know you mentioned the sound, just curious how the ripple feels off the face - plush/soft feeling or stiffer/firmer feel (what paddle would you compare the feeling to) thanks!
It's stiff, but also has a softer feel off the face, similar to a JOOLA Gen-3. So the plushness is a result of dwell time and not a soft face, if that makes sense
I really appreciate the discussion on cores. Couple of questions. First, is core material really expensive? I don’t understand why companies would not use better materials like Paddletek or Engage seems to do. Second, I thought the explanation for all the early core crushing of Gen 2 paddles was from heat? It sounds like your conversation with Crbn dispels that. So is heat not an issue with thermoforming?
Hi, I'm glad to hear the topic of polypropylene interests someone besides myself, haha. Yes, prices go up with grades of polymer, so that's an area to cut costs. Although I don't know how much polymer costs compared to, say, carbon fiber or Kevlar. But for your second question, yes, heat is still very important for core corruption. It seems that several factors were at play in the early days of thermoforming leading to all the broken cores: too much heat damaging the integrity of the core, low-grade polymer with lower heat tolerance, and thickness variance in the polymer.
Curious if you could provide a ranking of plushness vs firm. It seems to be a factor that I would really appreciate when making a decision to try out a paddle but unfortunately not many paddle reviewers has a chart ranking all paddles based off their stiff/plushness. I know it's going to be hard to make that list since it's a very subjective feeling.
What's the grip circumference on the R2 Ripple? 4.125" or 4.25"? Not many standard shape paddles offer a 4.25" grip circumference anymore... Big hands here so I prefer 4.25" with a single overgrip. If I use a 4.125", I have to put more than one overgrip, but then I lose the bevels.
Question for John. When USAP/PPAA does their deflection test do they lay the paddle on a flat surface or lay it on a frame that only contacts the outer edge of the paddle? My speculation is that they lay the paddle on a flat surface and thus this would explain how the Mod TA/Gearbox can pass the deflection test because it is only deflection of 1 surface with the other surface pressed against a solid object (i.e. it's only testing if the core itself deflects). If the test placed a paddle on the frame that only contacted the outer edges of the paddle then this would better test for deflection of the entire paddle (i.e. everything inside the perimeter of the paddle including a trampoline or tennis string type of deflection). Do you know how the test is performed?
Correct - deflection machines brace the paddle on the underside and then press in from the top. But the brace is small (couple of inches). So it's ineffective for floating cores
Is there any possibility at some future point that there could be a tool whereby a user can select a given paddle, apply their desired attributes “I want >= 7 twist weight, 115 swing weight, and a hand speed index
Really interesting idea! Would be complicated based on additional factors of where the additional weight is placed; weight of grip tape; etc. I've been doing it by trial-and-error, but it can be a little time consuming. I bet Kew and Briffidi could figure it out though! LOL
Good job guys fielding my “re-core my paddle please” comment. I liked Eddie’s observation that replace the frame and keep the core would also be in play. I’m not so sure about it being cost prohibitive … probably more of unwarranted profit prohibitive. For an example … assume a paddle company was selling you a $333 paddle that spin was gone in a couple of months. Assume that company was big enough to be advancing the best tech, including the evolution of cores … and let’s say push for plug and play standardization. Why not subscription pricing with that trailblazing company … they will improve cores x times a year (or frames) … and I get the new tech with my subscription. If I pay $666 a year, and get 3 new tech cores a year, didn’t everyone make enough $, and player stays up with tech? I know … troublemaker … I will let myself out. btw … I still think that Slyce buttcap weight anchored to your hand is suspect regarding the balance and pivot point. 😁
Some more thoughts on the replaceable core model: At the basic level, you either can replace the paddle parts that wear out, or you have a disposable paddle. Assume the following is based on moving away from disposable paddles. I’ve thought for a while paddles would end up (after rule changes) following either the table tennis model (rubbers) or tennis model (strings). Note … for this post not implying actual rubbers or strings, just guessing we will have table tennis-like blade bases, or tennis racquet-like bases. You could have blade-like bases, and either rubbers OR half cores on each side (think 8 mm current plastic core and carbon/resin surface applied to both sides of blade. My guess is any future core magic would be too limited by the rubbers or half cores, so for this thought experiment lets go with the tennis model (frame/plug and play cores) At this point … in this TLDR rant 😁, maybe some input on the mature tennis racquet/strings market … both costs and what we are used to: - $100-250 racquets, last 5+ years, tech not changing much - I restrung 10ish times a year, brought my own strings to stringer … didn’t play with gut ($30ish stringing x 10 = $300 a year) - could buy any string I wanted, change tensions as needed - I could go to local tennis shop, grab 5 racquets to demo, demo fee deducted from new racquet purchase. You could also have demo racquets shipped to you from online retailer. Not a perfect system, you were demoing with whatever strings and tension were in the racquet, and both strings and tension mattered a lot). But still better the buying a paddle you never hit, or hit for 5 minutes borrowed at the courts. Paddle tech is currently at it’s early stages, changing very fast. Many of us think $250 disposable paddles with short lifespans is unacceptable. How could that change? - just start with cost … my $300 / yr stringing cost should be more than enough profit for a paddle company to keep me in the equivalent of “fresh strings” - there should be a way to demo new paddles, new cores, new tech beyond reviewer’s OMG this is an awesome paddle, although I’m all in on the OMG and loving it 😋 - since tech is changing so fast, perhaps there is actually a subscription model that might use (I’m like Eddie … never go the subscription route … but surely there is an opening here that beats buying a new paddle every x months). Reload is effectively a subscription product … addressing the current disposable paddle nonsense. If one loves their current paddle, reps and weighting to their preferences, and you get to replace the single unit core with the new and better single unit core with similar weight … you just gave me my “fresh new strings”. Rant over … $300 a year is enough for fresh paddle strings … uh … I mean core.
Dear John, Could you please add data for the Joola Gen 3 Magnus 16" as your database has only 14" data which shows 2425RPM. Could 16" version of Gen 3 Magnus have ~500RPM lower ratinhg? How ? Don't both 16" and 14" have the same surface andonly difference would be stiffness but could it account for 500RPM difference?
I think when you take a wide body and add a Slyce, you may want to add your weight much higher. Your normal throat weighting is possibly causing some of your feeling issues.

Xrays were used months ago by USAP. From USAP's legal filing in the Joola lawsuit: "USAP had x-rays taken of these new models. Each x-ray revealed that the paddles are not structurally and functionally identical to the base model. Instead, each paddle contains additional foam around the perimeter that exceeds the single cell of foam present in the Perseus 14mm Mod TA-15 and Perseus 16 mm Mod TA-15"
@@johnkewpickleball USAP also did a teardown sometime before April 11th as noted in the Motion to Dismiss. "USAP “conduct[ed] a teardown” of the paddles, which revealed the full extent of foam around the rim and showed a violation of Rule 2.E.6.f, which prohibits springs or spring-like material, flexible membranes or any compressible material that creates a trampoline effect. USAP had communicated these results to Sport Squad on April 11, 2024, BEFORE the public release date." Can you verify with the Ronbus owner when he will be publicly announcing the release date? Thank you.
You can get x-rays at a forensic engineering firm. They regularly x-ray products during product defect investigations.
John and/or Eddie,
Is the ripple going to be your primary moving forward over the shape shifter?
For me, hard to say at this point. The Shapeshifter is still my go-to for drilling, etc. And the Ripple plays amazing, but I need to know if there's a break-in period where the paddle gets hotter. I wouldn't want to main something that is too hot
@@johnkewpickleball thanks great to know thanks! If you have any update on the "break in" period before the 27th for the Ripple please let us know!
I was planning on purchasing the Shapeshifter, but might hold out for the Ripple release! Likewise, I don't want a paddle that drastically changes over its lifetime.
At the moment, I have 4 in my bag -- no primary (who can have just one?!?). Just depends on what's going on. Those are: Ripple (power/pop), Monarch Control (all court, leaning control), Chorus (all court), and the Body Helix X4 (spin/power)
@@EddieK-PByou definitely prefer the monarch control to the monarch all court?
@@douglasmurdoch7247 they are actually very close in performance, and I’m good with either. For me though, the control has a little more pop, making it feel more lively.
I’m calling it now, titanium Kevlar will be the next wave. It won’t make a difference at all in performance.
FYI, Eddie is my spirit animal. “Eeeeehhh feels like a wide body”
Will it make a difference in the longevity of a paddle's face? Instead of losing 200 rpm after a month of use, will it only lose 100 rpm?
Try a materials/manufacturing lab instead of medical facility to find x-ray or microCT. Many manufacturing facilities use radiography for quality assurance.
R1 where do you recommend for weights? I did it at 7-9 and 5 to 3
will you have a discount code for the Ripple? Im buying a R2 ASAP.
Great podcast as always ! FYI I got and played the last 2 days the gen 3s scorpeus Collin Johns . I didn’t feel any difference in terms of power compare to the banned gen 3! And that’s supposedly the less powerful… I have the mod as well and the previous model
For an x-ray, talk to a few local independent chiropractors. Should be able to find something.
Im really excited to try out the ripple. It'll probably be my new main if it doesnt core crush and the durability is good, I.E No spin loss
I've only got about 10 hours into it, but so far, so good.
@@EddieK-PB That's good to hear! Can't wait to see what it feels like.
Other than some slight size difference what is the difference between the R1 and R2 Ripples?
I’ve been testing it for a few weeks. Jesus Christ the r2 is insane. Such fast hands and counters. The pop is insane
when does the public get their hands on one?
Curious if you’ve played with other poppy paddles like the Thrive Azul, how it might compare to something like that or others
@@HardyHarzsame thoughts. Is it elongated as well or more hybrid ?
@@HardyHarz I would say it's more akin to the Joola Gen3 than Thrive. Different class of paddle IMO.

Just curious if you prefer the 1/2 gram per inch versus 1 gram per inch tugsten tape, and why. Love your breakdown of things, so I'd like to hear your ideas on paddle performance with lead application.
On a standard paddle, would it make more sense to use the 1/2oz Slyce cap?
Perhaps - if this 1 oz cap ends up being too much, I may try the 0.5 oz.
John which one you like best the Joolas Scorpious S3 16mm or the Ripple R2 ?
Before break-in, I prefer the Ripple R2. But if the R2 gets much hotter with more play, I'd go with the Scorp 3S.
Thanks John appreciated!
@johnkewpickleball have you noticed or heard of the r2 or the r1 ripple getting more powerful since this podcast?
Just got my r2. How should I weight it?
Definitely would like to see the numbers of a mod 4 setup.
Great episode. How do you think titanium woven paddles are different from other surfaces? Will titanium be more expensive?
Go check out Pickleball Pursuit's podcast uploaded today - Justin did some great investigative journalism on "titanium" paddles
@@johnkewpickleball Hoping that the face material pressing against the foam filled cells, they will stay in place. Gotta wait and see.
The prostar is so sweet, but it is heavy.
@@ElzDscribe Thanks, I swing with low 9s on all my paddles so it won't be an issue for me. Now it comes down to durability.
I'm about 30 hours into my r1 ripple and haven't had break in past maybe 2 hours

Have you heard about the new Crbn?
Yeah new crbn?
Curious how the Ripple compares to one of the other poppy paddles you both liked - The Thrive Azul. Did either of you get to hit at 16mm version of the Ripple?
How’s the control on the Ripple? Hard for me to consider a 14 since I’m used to 16 (and higher).
Hey Jon, I am curious which paddle is currently your main. Also how do you have it set up? I keep trying to find a widebody/standard to replace my M2F 16mm but just can’t find something that feels as goood!
He’s using the shapeshifter with tungsten tape at 4 and 8
You may want to try the 11six24 Jelly Bean.
I had to wrap with athletic tape on my Azul to finally get it to stop coming loose.
MONARCH ALL COURT POP AND POWER SPIN AND PRICE..
John, will you be doing a full review of the Ripple?
@@kylepickleball Yes for sure, but not until it’s released
@@johnkewpickleball thanks, I'm debating ordering the beta b/c things could change with production but all the reviews I'm seeing make this an intriguing paddle. Kinda surprised you seem to prefer the R2 over the R1. I've always gone with R1 but the characteristics you mention make the R2 a better choice for me.
Have you tried and ask veterinary clinics for their x-ray service?
That is next on my list!
@@johnkewpickleball Thanks for the reply!
4.125
@@zachcarmichael699 bummer... Thanks though!
Is the ripple louder than the Joolas or Bantams? I heard someone say they are too loud. Something to be concerned about?
LOL
Really interested in the mod results from the Slyce speed cap on a standard wide body. Any thoughts for a 1 oz cap on a Fat Boy?
The Ripple is not available for purchase!
Why are the Ripple not on sale yet?
The Ripple launch date is 9/23
Good job guys fielding my “re-core my paddle please” comment.
Racquet companies sold me $200 racquets that lasted 5+ years and those companies were profitable. Huh? 🤔
Some more thoughts on the replaceable core model:
At the basic level, you either can replace the paddle parts that wear out, or you have a disposable paddle.
My guess is any future core magic would be too limited by the rubbers or half cores, so for this thought experiment lets go with the tennis model (frame/plug and play cores)
At this point … in this TLDR rant 😁, maybe some input on the mature tennis racquet/strings market … both costs and what we are used to:
- $100-250 racquets, last 5+ years, tech not changing much
- I restrung 10ish times a year, brought my own strings to stringer … didn’t play with gut ($30ish stringing x 10 = $300 a year)
- could buy any string I wanted, change tensions as needed
- I could go to local tennis shop, grab 5 racquets to demo, demo fee deducted from new racquet purchase.
- just start with cost … my $300 / yr stringing cost should be more than enough profit for a paddle company to keep me in the equivalent of “fresh strings”
- there should be a way to demo new paddles, new cores, new tech beyond reviewer’s OMG this is an awesome paddle, although I’m all in on the OMG and loving it 😋
- since tech is changing so fast, perhaps there is actually a subscription model that might use (I’m like Eddie … never go the subscription route … but surely there is an opening here that beats buying a new paddle every x months).

What is the length and width of the ripple ? Is it hybrid shape ?
Standard: 16 x 8
I think when you take a wide body and add a Slyce, you may want to add your weight much higher. Your normal throat weighting is possibly causing some of your feeling issues.

Xrays were used months ago by USAP. From USAP's legal filing in the Joola lawsuit:
"USAP had x-rays taken of these new models. Each x-ray revealed that the paddles are not structurally and functionally identical to the base model.
