5 draws in a row, and a classic game of 2 halves. #OUFC were decent in the first, but you have to give credit to those Rams. #DCFC were much better in the second half. Oxford fans and Derby fans, let me know your thoughts. 🐂🐏
Really frustrating second half performance. Looked like a different team. Didn’t take our chances in the first half and it came back to bite us. Onwards and upwards but pretty disappointing in the end! Particularly our midfield was missing in the second half. Look forward to Brannagan’s return..!
Yes Brannagans loss is being felt more and more with every passing game. It's was annoying that we couldn't wrestle back any control. Think that is where we miss some genuine pace on the wing. Not doing too bad but I am worried about today's game.
Let's face it, we're certainly doing a lot better than anyone predicted. I for one are well impressed. Sunderland is as mentioned a free hit. Hope that Des recovers real soon and thanks very much for your continued efforts.
Cheers Malcolm. Des seems fine so that is good news. I think you can be happy with Oxford start to the season and still call things out that we're not great. Sunderland is going to be a really tough game. Maybe we are due a lucky win.
Bit of reverse from our previous home games with us starting strong and finishing weak in the 2nd half. Don’t think el-Miz and Rodrigues have been strong recently and again last night. In the end think draw was a fair result and current points total and league position is way beyond expectations at start of season. Hope Des is ok and COYY!
I think Des is ok, so all good there. Rodrigues is the one that is struggling more for me. El Miz may also need a break. I think I underestimated Derby in this game, and overall a point is certainly not a terrible result. Feels a bit worse as we were good in the first half. If you can't win though, DONT LOSE. Roll on Sunderland. Maybe a first away win.COYY
After playing Burnley and WBA at home this was a game to win Derby are not in their class and in the first half we should have been at least two up, but if you don't take your chances you will pay and we did with a Vaulks gift (again) probably the worst game I've seen this year at home , both teams looked like poor div 1 teams a real lack of quality and a draw was the right result in the end as no one did enough to win, play like that Saturday and we will get a spanking.....COYY.
Cheers Paul, ended up being a frustrating draw, but at least we got something from the game. I feel maybe we underestimated Derby a bit, and maybe we are not the best against a side like that. Hard to see us getting anything at Sunderland, but the next 2 home games are Swansea and Hull. Oxford need to be targeting points there. COYY
Frustrating second half. This is the first match I’ve felt really despondent. Oxford need to freshen things up for Saturday. We looked worryingly flat. I agree with moving Goodhram to the No 10 role. He played well in the middle last season, so it feels a little counter productive to move him to the wing, especially there’s plenty of options for the wing
Team is struggling a bit, and hard to fathom that Sunderland wont be a bit of a tin hat backs to the wall job. Swansea and Hull are the next 2 home games and Oxford need to find a win in one of those games.
Rodrigues is looking in need of a benching (slow and regularly giving away possession). Sibley needs to be given a proper chance. Have to say I'm not convinced by Dembele. Yes, he "looks lively" but he's so easily knocked off the ball and loves to dribble when a pass would be a better option. His career stats bear out his lack of end product.
Cheers Ted, lets give Dembele a chance, I thought he was decent in the first half, and played a good hand in the goal. Agree with you on Rodrigues. Also think he could be a good impact sub like he was vs Stoke. Sibley should get more game time.
Derby fan here. I see yates being this year what collins was lasy year. A solid striker, as long as there's decent supply and I seriously believe that's what is missing. David ozoh missing from midfield through injury plays a massive part to that I believe, and without him just not enough creative outlets to bring the ball forwards. Ebou adams is a quality CDM, aggressive, always hunting for the ball back to derby possession, and in that role he's probably one of the best in the division, but in terms of taking the ball forwards, he lacks a bit of quality and is a bit clumsy unfortunately, and him and ozoh just compliment each other so perfectly in getting possession back and the first quality pass or the first touch in getting the ball forwards. Blackett-taylor will play a pivotal role in that, as he's still growing into the side with every game, creating more and more chances, but just lacks that final touch quality whether that's a shot or a lay up, but I'm sure more of that will come.
Cheers Darren. I thought you looked a very solid side. Appreciate you taking time to go over your thoughts on this Derby side and I am always curious to learn from opposition fans. I feel Warne is good for the short term where you look to consolidate. Longer term I can't see him being a manager that pushes Derby towards top half, playoffs, promotion though. Good luck for the season bud. If Oxford stay up then that is a massive achievement for us. I think I underestimated this Derby side, so in the end I can't begrudge a point.
You could see their goal coming, we just couldn’t hold the ball for any decent periods. I think we were tired and that causes mistakes. Definitely McEachran for Vaulks and Sibley for Ruben Saturday. We are so missing Brannagan.
Cheers Michael, every week you see how irreplicable Brannagan is. I agree with those changes for Sunderland. Demebele may be injured so there maybe another tweak there.
as a derby fan i built you lot up to be alot better than you was last night, i thought youd of carved us open more especially with you being at home, in terms of similarities of who weve played you seem very similar to qpr in terms of style but think you are slightly better
Cheers Sam, appreciate you leaving the comment. I think Oxford underestimated Derby, and I think I was guilty of it too. I think you look a solid side. I am not sure Warne is a guy that can take Derby towards the upper half of the Championship, but for now I think he is doing a good job. If Oxford stay up on goal difference then that is an amazing season for us. Good luck for the season bud.
Is Placheta injured he looked lively early season. Its time to try some fresh faces. Current 11 not ticking boxes for 90 minutes. Would like to have seen Sibley given a start against his old club Vaulks seems to be cruising at present
Hi Ian, hope your well. great review covered the points I had a issue with. I felt after we scored we got to overconfident, players hogging the ball to long and losing it, it was like from that we got very sloppy Derby were good and got into some great positions but our defence came to the rescue. hopefully we can keep that sloppiness out on Sat. and get a draw 🙏
Cheers Robert. I think I underestimated Derby, and credit to them they played well in the 2nd half. In the first half whenever we got it out to Goodrham or Dembele we looked dangerous, so not sure why that wasn't the plan all the time. Rodrigues was the chief ball hogger for me. Holds it then fall over looking for a free kick. Anyway can't complain too much a point is always going to be better than nought in this league.
@@OUFCFanView Yes Derby caused a lot of problems in defence and had a lot of good chances , But every point for us is important, I was Checking over past seasons and 50 plus points is the safety mark. Birmingham last season were 51 points i think and went down but before that it was below 50 points. i’m aiming for play offs myself. 👍🏼 bring on sunderland
Give Sibley more game time. Vaulks an accident waiting to happen We need Edwards and Phillips back to put some punch up front. We aint gonna score many with one striker up front. Harris has faded Scarlett will be gone at seasons end and Goodwin has barely been off the injury list since he arrived Has he played a full game yet?
I don't think Goodwin has played a full 90 for us yet. Let's not get too upset, we don't need to dismiss players like Vaulks just because he has had a iffy start. Plenty of players have made mistakes, but all his seem to result in goals. Scarlett has. Been good so far and Harris I am sure will go on another decent run. Buckingham is never going to play 2 up top either. I would like to see it, but it's out of fashion.
With this game sandwiched between tough West Brom and Sunderland fixtures I thought it was one where 3 points really had to be targeted. However with the benefit of hindsight both teams form did suggest this had a draw all over it, as did most of last nights Championship fixtures. Vaulks is now a liability and with this many mistakes and his propensity to always look to pass backwards I’m sure all teams will look to press him to force yet more errors. If McEachran is fit enough I just can’t see how Vaulks can start at Sunderland. It’s going to be interesting when Brannagan comes back to see if he gets put into the CDM role or takes maybe Rodrigues place? It’s also going to be interesting to see who starts out of Scarlett and Harris at the weekend but it would be hard to drop an in form striker who’s scored 3 in 3 (inc his international goal) although the harrying and hold up play of Harris will be useful against a Sunderland team who will no doubt enjoy the majority of possession. We have typically started matches slowly and improved this season. Much of that I think is down to Buckinghams in game tactical intelligence so I wonder if the poor 2nd 1/2 last night can, in part, be attributed to Buckingham being unwell? The intensity of the games and injuries will no doubt be taking their toll but with 5 consecutive draws, disappointing displays vs Portsmouth and Derby and sloppy mistakes becoming habitual it would be a great boost if we could take at least 4 points from the upcoming back to back home games. It’s so tight that a run of 3 losses or wins would put us bang in trouble or in contention respectively. I was intrigued to see Leigh come on for Rodrigues last night. I wonder if that was just to get some fresh legs on and minutes into Leigh or if that was a portent of Buckingham seeing Leigh’s role as more attacking and potentially as another cover winger?
Agree with you about Vaulks, just not up to the standard required to survive in this Lge. 1 or 2 others also qualify in that respect. Never been a Harris Fan and El Miz is fast becoming a liability. Sibly and Scarlett need to be given a decent run, & with McEachran back Vaulks is surely out for a long period.
Cheers Peter. I think Both sides would have marked this for a win so as you said probably not surprising that it was a draw. I was pretty happy with the first half, it's just a shame that we couldn't wrestle back control from Derby in the 2nd half. The team is hanging in there and I don't think the Buckingham illness had much to do with the drop off in the 2nd half. Glad he is OK BTW There has been talk of Leigh playing on the wing this weekend, and it might not be a bad shout. Wouldn't it be great if he scores the winner. Onto Vaulks then. His mistakes are getting in punished. Nelson made 2 howlers in that game, Derby didn't score from them so everyone comes away saying he played amazingly well. I think he did too, but those mistakes are forgotten. I feel a bit sorry for Vaulks, and I don't want to write him off just yet, but I have noticed his tendency to always play back. I do think Brannagan will take that holding role when he comes back, and maybe Vaulks might be a sub to come on to help us close games, and throw balls into the box. Lets not give up on him yet though.
I wonder if we are now slightly a victim of early success; beating Norwich, Preston and Stoke at home is no mean feat, and certainly for me I'm looking "up" the table at the moment...so whilst if we are pushing for promotion we should be winning these games, the reality is this season we need to try and stay in this division so whilst we probably should have put the game to bed in the first half, a point is fair and another one on the road to survival 🤷 Vaulks will take the brunt of it but generally our play was so sloppy in the second half as you pointed out, if we'd just got the basics right I don't see Derby scoring...but it's all a lesson and learning curve and unbeaten at home is nothing to sniff at!
Every mistake Vaulks is making at the moment seems to end up in the back of the net. All over the park that was a poor goal to give away. Nelson also made a couple of horror show passes out from the back in that game, but Derby didn't score so people don't dwell on them. I think I was guilty of underestimating Derby, and I think you are right. It was built off the wins we have had already. Every point should be cherished, and also credit to Derby as they played well in the 2nd half. Sunderland will be very tough Dave. BUT!, it is the sort of game the players should relish. The Derby point was the first game where I was disappointed with a point. If you can't win though, then don't lose, so you are right. Point is not a bad thing.
