  • Listen carefully as Tortugas Jack gives us valuable lessons before we board the Yankee Freedom II Ferry for our 70 mile journey. We arrived in a rain storm setting the stage for remarkable footage of this most inaccessible National Park.
The fort was started in 1846 and saw active use from 1860 to 1930's. It is a massive but unfinished coastal fortress. It is the largest masonry structure in the Western Hemisphere, and is composed of over 16 million bricks.

Well to be honest with you, I never heard of this place either until I saw an aerial picture of it in a gift shop at the entrance to Everglades National Park! My friend said “we have to go see that” so out to the island we went after a quick trip to Key West. Thanks for commenting! Dave.

I truly admire your video approach of letting the images tell your intended story, mitout mindless voice-over. the nat sound is superb, the hint of dramatic background music perfectly mixed. Sir. you ARE a Master. I give thanks to you for your posts.

John, many thanks for the kind words! I am not one to do a lot of narration since detailed information is only a click away on the internet (and probably more accurate than I could ever remember!) I usually try to tell my story with visuals and music only. Sometimes it works, sometimes not! I let the viewer make his/her own impression of the scenes presented. Thanks again for watching and taking the time to comment. I really do appreciate it! Dave in Montana.

I actually found this place from a poster hanging on the wall in an Everglades gift shop! Since we were going to Key West anyway we just HAD to do a day trip to Fort Jefferson! I hope you can make it out to the island some day. Thanks for watching and commenting. Dave.

Love the history of Key West! Check out our video which displays a vintage birds-eye cartograph of Key West Florida produced in 1884. Click the link below.
