- We're back with the Clowne Local History Society on this video catching up on the old Clowne LDECR/LNER station work. We're also having a bit of an explore and some of the burried and lost platforms and goods facilities that were nearby.
Since our last visit in November, various pieces of cosmetic work has been undertaken as well as further work behind the scenes on the information board.
We're back in Clowne, Derbyshire, for an update on the restoration of the former LDECR/LNER station.
Lots of cosmetic work since our last visit. The sillouhet of the train has now recieved some colour and looks splendid. Further work has been carried out to repair the ramps from the booking office down to the platforms. Work is ongoing to install an information board at the top of the station footpath on the way down to the Clowne Greenway. We also take a look at the colliery memorial with Remembrence Sunday decoration.
The station was opened in March 1897 as Clown, by the Lancashire Derbyshire & East Coast Railway on the company's Beighton Branch between Langwith and Sheffield. The station building booking office was situated on top of the tracks with ramps to the platforms either side. In 1939 before WW2, passenger serivces over the line ceased leaving the stations existence in question. Before this time the LD&ECR was taken over by the Great Central Railway.
In 1951 the station was renamed Clowne South to distinguish is from it's neighbour on the MIdland Railway - Clowne & Barlborough station. Which sat only a few yards away.
The line and station remained open for excursions and freight traffic before 1964 when the station was closed completely.
The station was eroded. Local development erased the surrounding infrastructure piece by piece until the station site and tunnel entrance was left overgrown and a hotspot for anti-social behaviour. The station building remained in use thanks to it's street frontage and would later become a bank, bridal shop, photography shop and most recently a beauty salon. The station masters house sits aside the station and is now a business centre.

It’s disused, never likely to be used so why spend time and money on it when so many more important issues need addressing.
I don't believe any public money is being spent on it.
It's just a local community giving up their time to make a part of their village history look nicer.
Just people taking a bit of pride in their community, nothing wrong with it.
Watching from Northampton
its nice to see clowne station being preserved its a shame i couldnt see this for myself, keep up the good work paul
Cheers Jason 👍🙂
Live at Beighton not far from the old Beighton station originally from Leicester where my mum and dad's house backed onto the the Great Central line near the old Dunlop works of the Narbourogh road my Grandad and I loved steam engines and lines they ran on.Nice one again Paul.
Great connections with the GCR there.
I lived in Beighton for nearly 16 years. I loved living there. So much to explore 👍
Thank you for the updates on this restoration. The companion with the walking tour in the field was a great addition showing the existing remains. Been watching since your first video. Will patiently wait for the next. Cheers Paul! 🇬🇧🙂👍🇺🇸
Excellent. Thanks Martin. Glad you've enjoyed the journey.
Watching from south Devon . My great grandfather and grandfather were drivers on the line and lived nearby
Hi Helen. That's great to hear.
And hi to South Devon.
So many thanks Wobbly Runner, my dad was a premium apprentice at Stratford LNER works during the war. Studied at night school and left the railways as he said it was 'dead mens' shoes. But never lost his knowledge and love of railways. As daddy's girl I loved all the trips to rail events, I remember him taking us to watch one of the last steam hauled services pulling out of , I think? Paddington. If my knees weren't shot I would love pottering about among the ivy trying to piece together what was where before the wanton destruction, and overlaying of Greenway accesses. But you are doing it for me so I can enjoy it sitting down, I am soo grateful.
Thank you very much. Great to hear your story. So much history destroyed
I like what they've done with this station renovation. It's now much tidier and the character has been preserved, with some key features such as the railings replaced. I'm guessing that this has been achieved on a small budget and the people are mainly volunteers. It might be great if a full-height, representative section of platform could be included, but that could be costly.
Watching from South London. Lived in Sheffield for a couple of years.
Thanks Paul.
Yes, very low budget. Reusing a lot of stuff reclaimed or donated. A very resourceful group of people. Full of admiration for the toil and sweat through heat, cold, wind and rain :)
Went down to meet the team last week and followed up again today, made very welcome by everyone and it’s fantastic to see the restoration work progress.
Although I’m not ‘native’ to Clowne (originally from Boston, Lincolnshire) I’ve been living in the village for over 14 years and having recently found my love for walking again last year it’s great seeing Clowne’s history being restored and preserved.
Subscribed to your channel and look forward to catching up on your previous content and future videos.
Thank you for sharing this excellent video with everyone. Best wishes to you and your family
Great stuff. It's got some very interesting pockets of history hasn't it, Clowne.
They're doing great work at the station. I've had so much fun watching them work on it, in a way I'll be a bit sad when it's all finished.
Watching and living in the Scottish Highlands. Used to live in Derbyshire. We love your videos. Miss the railway walks with the dogs back in the day. Keep up the good work. Excellent ! 👍
Great stuff John! Hi to the Scottish Highlands.
Watching from New Orleans Louisiana! (originally from Sheffield). Hopefully you can get round to doing a video of the lost London 'downline' from Midland station?! Keep up the good work!
Hi Jamie. Sheffield and New Orleans are quite different I guess? 😃
Nice one Paul. These people do a great job in preserving this stuff. I love how they use LEGO to figure out how there gonna do stuff to!
LDEC ran at the top of our garden on Spital Lane when I was a kid whilst the Chesterfield Loop ran across the front just over a field.
Hi David. As luck would have it, I'm just in the middle of editing a video of the LDECR over Spital Lane.
@@WobblyRunner Thanks I’ll look out for that
Well done for following this project and filming updates. It's great to see the progress of this project, I'm hoping to get over there with my grandson to have a look.......cheers James 🙂👍
Cheers James. I'm sure he'll love seeing it 😀👍
@WobblyRunner I think you are right he will, we'll have to pick a nice day 🙂👍
Would make a great model layout 😮
As luck would have it I'm having a replica of it on my layout...eventually
Hi Paul, the team are doing a great job there. 😊One thing that could be added to this site, other than the 1897-1907 rail map i mentioned on facebook is a section of a telegraph pole and signal wind bracing loop which is currently at Duckmanton Cutting,it's about 1ft long protuding out of the ground, but is presumably anchored another 1ft into the earth. Will point it out when we go over it in late March or early April.
Watching from Victoria, BA, Canada. I lived in Swallownest many years ago when I was a student and recall passing through Clowne many times.
Great to hear from you in Canada 😀👍
And great to see you guys restoring UK industrial and cultural heritage - keep up the good work!
Twentynine Palms California. Very interesting. It would be great to see all the Shrubs removed.
Great stuff
👍 It's great to hear from so many people far and wide. 😀
Greetings, the wobbly runner well it’s Jeff here from Melbourne Australia. I find your TH-cam have quite fascinating and very informative on Railway archaeology. Well done Sir well done
Hi Jeff. Good to hear from you. Glad you enjoy the videos 👍
Watching from Bath, Somerset. Great stuff going on!
Thank you. Hello to Bath 👍🙂
Viewing your super efforts from just outside Alicante, can we have some of that there rain please?😁

Watching from Melbourne Australia
Hi to Melbourne.
Great to hear from so many folk down under.
Looking 👍 good.
Back in 98 when I took photos the bulldozers hadn't moved in and the other staion was still standing.
Nice chapter lads .
👍 why didn't you stop them 😄
lived in Tibby for a long time, now in Newcastle. I do miss some of the rolling countryside but there is as much, if not more industrial and transport archaeology here to rummage through & explore. Been here nearly 2 year and barely scratched the surface. Its good to see your videos of the place that sparked my interest in industrial archaeology to add to my love of exploring, Thank you.
Wow you're in a real hotspot up that way. I know very little about the stuff up Newcastle way other than what I've watched and read about. I wouldnt know where to start. Happy exploring. An area I would love to spend more time learning about
Fantastic update Paul, the guys have done an amazing job! All the best from Sunny Brisbane (Aus) 😊👍
Greetings to Brisbane 👍😀.
I think that's 3 different comments from Brisbane now 😄
Watching all your videos from Hackenthorpe, Sheffield 12 👍
Hi Jim 👍
My memories of Shirebrook Valley, the closed line from Birley East Pit and the Coisley Hill tunnel being filled in which I watched in one of your earlier vids 👍 👍
I think we are a bit far south for you, but the Bath/Bournemouth Somerset and Dorset line offers similar hidden secrets and parts are under restoration to
very high standards.I thoroughly identify with the young man pulling apart the undergrowth. It would not surprise me if their enthusiasm has yet to be fully quenched! Brill vid.
Cheers Bob. Great to hear from you. It's good to hear similar projects all over the country. Youngert people getting involved to to keep the stories going for future generations.
Watching from the Scottish Highlands.
Hi to the Scottish Highlands
Watching from Minnesota
👍 It's great to hear from so many people far and wide. 😀
Well I’m in Norfolk now where I’m originally from.
Would so love to hire a mini digger and search for those platforms!
Hello Norfolk Jon
😂 Catching the train from Wroxham to Cromer and Sheringham today. Should be in the presence of some disused railways!
Another great video thanks, watching from Barmouth Gwynedd
Cheers Ian.
Love Barmouth. Be there again in a few months time. Say hi to the coastguard for me :)
@WobblyRunner Will do I know quite a few of them, also a great video on the Mawddach Trail on the Barmouth to Ruabon Railway, another good Railway walk is the Afon Wen to Caernarvon Railway which is a public walk way. And part of the Bangor to Bethesda Railway with a tunnel and a part you did on the Caernarvon th Llanberis Railway also with a Tunnel you can walk through on a public Trail towards Llanberis 👍
@ianbache8776 great info Ian cheers. Hoping to get upto Llanberis to do a few bits around there. It's all wife permitting, as if it was down to me I'd be off shooting videos every day 😄.
The coastguard had to rescue me off the beach last year by the harbour break after I broke my leg 🤕
I may of caught that rescue on my scanner last year hope all went well, there is another great walk on the Bala to Trawsfynydd Railway across the Cym Prysor Viaduct and track bed, there is a lay by you can park in and walk across the Viaduct and further, keep up the good work 👍
@@ianbache8776 great stuff. The Cym Prysor is very tempting. What is the trackbed like walking all the way back to Trawsfynydd?
Remarkable work done
👍😀
Living in Sheffield.
Searching for videos of Chesterfield, particularly Clowne if anyone knows any other You tubers.
We always like to see your updates, kids love finding out more about "our stations". As you can. Guess, we're from Clowne!
Cheers Charlotte. Glad you all like watching them.
Oh wow, brilliant video, wouldn't it be great if can do a time team sort of thing for these lost relics? A dedicated group of people giving us our past back!!
You're right. Would be great to investigate more. Tony Robinson know's where Clowne is right? 🙂
Great to see history being preserved , the last of the 1800’s bridges is soon to be demolished at stairfoot Barnsley by a council that knows the cost of everything and the value of nothing , great work by the volunteers.
Cheers Mick. That's sad to hear about Stairfoot
Portland, Oregon, USA
👍 It's great to hear from so many people far and wide. 😀
Watching from Ramsbottom, Bury
Home of the East Lancashire Railway
Hi to Ramsbottom. I used to know a good chippy there about 30 years ago :)
They are doing a grand job of making the portal look really good again. Rather a shame that the ground has been built up so much in recent years...seems to be quite a bit left under the ivy too. I wonder if some patches could be cleared to have some more to show to visitors, while obviously keeping most of the area for nature? Watching from Yorkshire and enjoying the channel!
Great stuff. You're right. It's amazing the size of the area of ruins in the "woods". Such a big site.
Hi Paul Fab update on the Clowne restoration im not far away in Whiston Rotherham. ❤😊

If anyone in Clowne is bored get digging and get all that ivy etc removed. 😁 I'd never considered the ground has been raised /altered where the tunnel entrance is..
I suspect all it would expose is demolished scattered bricks and bits of concrete sadly. Would be a great project though

Nice and local 😄
I'm not far from this, in Beighton Sheffield
Nice was Paul.
