Are Yukon gold potatoes determinant or indeterminate ? What about purple majesty 💜 potatoes ? I'm going to grow them in 5 gallon buckets. I hope it will work in the crazy weather we have here in central Florida.
I didn’t realize how childish my mind still is until I saw that potato 🥔 gave me the laugh I needed! Thank you for sharing🌿🌸 I can’t wait to grow some this year
Your videos are so enjoyable to watch. I love watching the potatoes harvest more than anything! Here is Sydney, we don't have the same type potatoes you do, but I came across Mayan Gold potatoes that have sprouted in the shop. So I bought them really cheap and will plant them and see what we get!! 😁
Love the way you narrate the video! I could glance away and still know what’s going on. (What pros do very well.) Also, awesome potato harvest!! Starting to grow a few varieties myself.
There is something really ASMR about watching a potato harvest. Excellent job. I grew in 10 ltr pots this year as an experiment. Late planting of Charlottes - a first early. Great yield considering how late we planted (just moved to a new place) , but we harvested the last of them this week. 1.5 - 2lbs per pot. I'm looking forward to the Sweet Potato harvest. I'm growing them for the first time this year. (Southern Ireland).
There is, isn't there! That is a great yield, especially considering you had a late planting. :) We are also looking forward to sweet potato harvest time (should be in the next week or so). I would love to hear how your harvest turns out. Thank you so much for watching!
Amazing harvest of potatoes .. containers were definitely a success... You're doing your Fall Harvest, I'm about to put my seed potatoes in containers over the weekend 😃 Awesome video Have a good evening
That is so awesome that you are just getting started. What a difference in seasons! We love container potato growing for sure. You did great with yours last season, so we can't wait to see the results with them this year. :)
You have just made my day. I have to say, I'm pulling for the potatoes, but I've seen some pretty big sweet potatoes too. I love potatoes of both varieties. Being from the South and living on a farm, (now in WV) I really miss gardening. Thank you so much!
As someone who is originally from the great state of WV, and who grew up on a farm, I know what you mean. :) I am so glad you enjoyed the harvest. We have sweet potato harvests coming up really soon, so stay tuned. :D
Hi Pearl. Welcome and thank you! Here is a video that documents the planting process in containers: th-cam.com/video/0xp71HVeH8M/w-d-xo.html and, the harvest results are here: th-cam.com/video/8qilYht6H2k/w-d-xo.html.
Great harvest. We enjoy the buckets for the "control" you get so to speak. We love the Yukon gold for mashed potatoes, perfect for that and the russet we grow almost entirely for making fries. Potatoes are definitely a weakness here lol.
Instead of rocks by the drain wholes, I place straw. By the end of the season it is decomposed nicely. I also add live worms during planting which helps. My holes dont leak dirt but do let excess water out.
I just planted some russets today. I learned some things from you today, it was never clear to me what were Early potatoes and what were late, I have it now. Thanks.
Two of my favorite varieties to grow are Yukon Gold and Adirondack Blue. So far they are all I'm growing this year. Maybe I'll get some Russerts too I don't know. Adirondack Blue that I've grown in the past have a purple skin and very bright purple meat. I'll be growing in the ground, in containers and in a raised bed. Although I don't really want to dig down in my raised bed. I can always get more containers lol. Nice harvest looked like fun. One of my favorite things is potato harvest time.
Hi! I’m going to be growing potato’s for the first time and I’m growing Norkotah russets and masquerade!!! :) I’d love to see y’all try masquerade if you haven’t already
Fantastic options for potatoes. I had never seen masquerade potatoes before you mentioned them. They look really cool, so we will have to see if we can get our hands on some. Where did you/will you get your seed potatoes this season?
I am new to your channel so I don't know what all you have tried. My favorites are french fingerling, Adirondack blue, Yukon gold, purple majesty, but I'm anxious to try this purple Puruvian fingerling, Adirondack red, magic molly, Russian banana and Austrian crescent fingerings as well as German butterball potatoes.
Welcome to the channel! We hope you enjoy. Great choices on potatoes. We have grown about half of the ones you mentioned, but a personal favorite has to be the Magic Molly potatoes. They grew so well, and they have an outstanding flavor. Keep up the good work and keep trying new varieties, and we will do the same! :)
Here is a link to the actual containers: www.globalindustrial.com/p/shipping-container-without-lid-12. Global Industrial makes them, and they are #5 plastic, which is considered food safe. Very fortunately, as you can see from the cost, we didn't have to buy them, but they have made great growing containers.
Yukon Gold potatoes are determinate so that's why they grow in the top 4" or so. You don't need a deep bin or bed to grow them as a result. You also don't need to hill them up. Russets, on the other hand, are indeterminant and have to be hilled up.
Hi I live in milw Wi I am going to try and plant potatoes with my grand babies could u please tell me what kind of fertilizer to use and where would I get the buckets from?? Thank u!!
I use all of my varieties for one thing !! TO EAT 😂🤣 !! They can all be baked, fried, roasted, mashed, whipped, and baked ! The size has a lot to do with the process of cooking them. I fry can a lot of mine !
At some point we need to figure out a root cellar, but for now, we are trying some alternatives to make sure we can keep them as long as possible, and of course enjoy them as much as we can. :D
Hi. How much did you get on average per seed potato in pounds/kg? and What type of fertilizer did you use throughout from soil preparation to during growth stage till maturity? Thanks
1. I didn't know a russet could make a berry. It must be OP, I thought they were hybrids, interesting. 2. That machine looks like a version of the one the Veggie Boys reinvented to work their potato fields. Originally it was some kind of rock picker. It was on one of their recent episodes. 3. I would like to see you grow Purple Viking Potatoes next year. Their beauty is outside and how beautiful depends on how good of seed potato you pick up. If you are really really adventurous you could try to grow the South American tuber OCA.
1) We aren't sure about this. Not all varieties do, but we don't know exactly which ones can or cannot, but we will look into that further. 2) When I recorded that (several months ago) we had not yet seen that video, but since then we have. It is really neat what they have done with theirs. Another one of our community members also commented a link to the specific potato picking machine. It is amazing to watch it work. It looks like it originally would have been drawn by horses. 3) We definitely want to try some different varieties, and I think we can locate some purple viking potatoes (but we will have to see). I have seen OCA before but never tried it, so I don't really know how it tastes, but it looks beautiful. Thank you so much for the comments and suggestions! Have a wonderful weekend!
I'm also in Wisconsin. We grow KENNBECK and sweet potatoes. I would like to try Yukon or baby Reds. I was wondering about the grey totes....where did u get them?
Excellent choices! The grey totes were given to us by someone who had used them to store papers in the past (so unfortunately I don't have any idea where they originally bought them), but they are sturdy and food safe, so we repurposed them. They work really well. I think the overall size of them is great for root crops, or at least that has been our experience so far. :)

I disagree with your statement that you don't wash your potatoes that soil has microbes in it and so forth you need to hose them off then make sure that they're well dried out before you store them you should not store them with Garden dirt on them that's asking for trouble I've been growing potatoes for over 30 years always wash them but make sure they're good and dry before they put in storage

Russell Potato 🥔 😋
So delicious!!!
Concerning the type of potato harvest I’ve enjoyed the most, the russets probably have it, but I really did like the purple Molly, as well!
Thank you! Yes, the Magic Molly potatoes were a favorite of ours as well. :D
I think digging potatoes is the best gardening task. It's like Christmas!!!--never know what you'll get, but what excitement! Great harvest!
So much Christmas happening these days! :D You are so right, it is so much fun to harvest. Sweet potato harvests coming soon. :)

What kind of soil did you use? Looks so nutritious.
It is a really nice, well-draining mix. This soil mix is: coco coir, peat moss, and organic compost. Then we add our organic fertilizers.
