I don't care about Taylor Swift, but I completely understand the uncensored scene because as a celebrity, if you are not skin and bones as a woman, the media is vicious. They called Britney Spears fat because her body filled out when she hit adulthood and she was a normal weight and that's what that scene is in the music video, except Taylor Swift ended up internalizing it.

They are bullies. Plain and simple. The lack of consideration it takes to forget that *all* women are subjected to shame and judgement about their appearance will always be baffling to me. I'd bet a lot of money that Taylor has gotten more scrutiny about her appearance than all the women complaining about her combined. The fact that there is no thought about that just shows how completely self centered they are.

The other thing that bothers me about the “health swap” hate videos is that they fail to acknowledge that a lot of junk food is highly palatable and scientifically designed to keep us eating. The people that have to hide the food or not keep it in the house don’t have a bad relationship with food, they literally can’t stop themselves from eating it all because the food is designed to make you do that. If you are addicted to booze, it’s best to keep it out of your house, no?

I think that the thing that really peeves me about these FAs attacking skinny people is that these skinny people are under the same societal pressures that FAs are supposedly fighting. "Skinny"/normal people are also told that they're not skinny enough. Taylor Swift was told she wasn't skinny enough.
This isn't "the thins" oppressing fat people, this is society not wanting anyone to feel secure about their body.

    • @iceprincess2134
      @iceprincess2134 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

Exactly. I'm generally a thin person, but I have a wide pelvis and muscular thighs, but when I was in middle/high school in the 90s I was thought of as fat because I didn't fit the waifish, thin-hipped, flat butt look that was popular at that time.
A lot of girls developed deep insecurities if not straight up EDs because of this.
The trauma and the messaging didn't not happen simply because some people are bigger.
In a way though I think it was actually worse. While I don't endorse bullying and negative reinforcement, at least for those that are overweight it is real and a problem that needs to be fixed, whereas the others where healthy girls being gaslit to starve themselves.

My husband is a type I diabetic, & it's always driven me crazy when I hear FAs/people in that camp talk about cancelling health swaps/diet foods. They so easily forget that some people have chronic conditions that make sugar-free/low-carb foods NECESSARY. I really don’t think it was demonizing. It was saying “this isn’t helpful for everyone.” Which is very true for me, personally, as my family will go on somewhat radical diets for relatively mild sensitivities, eliminating foods and swapping them for substitutes. I tried copying their actions and removed all corn, wheat, and dairy, and it was miserable, and contributed to my obsession with food and binge eating disorder.

...That said, I imagine that's a lot harder when your job involves caring about your public image. Probably helps that I'm innately contrarian, a tiny bit twisted, and kind of a bad person, though I imagine that many who have met me would disagree. People confuse being polite with being nice, for some reason. I try my best to be the former, especially with strangers, but that's mostly just to smooth social interactions along. As someone who grew up fat, I know for sure that feeling insecure about weight sucks, but so does having an ED and feeling shamed into silance. the way people responded to the Taylor Swift video really breaks my heart - if anything, it's in line with what they're advocating for. if this woman who is very much The Western Beauty Standard - blonde haired, blue eyed, thin, tall, conventionally attractive white woman - still struggles with feeling good about herself, what does that mean for other more marginalized people? i also just feel like a lot of people have this really deep disdain for women with restrictive EDs - they'd deny it, but it's there. they don't want her to talk about her experience at all because it makes them uncomfortable. i mean, why don't people get up in arms the same way when meghan trainor and jennifer lawrence talked about "trying out anorexia" but they "didn't have the willpower"? Pink made a super offensive music video for "stupid girls" in the early 2000s where she's mocking women with EDs - it's just another form of "i'm not like other girls" to me

I don’t think there is any other verbiage they could’ve used. They could’ve used “larger, overweight,” or even just a number and people would have still had a problem. The lady who was going off about people not having certain foods in their house sure is something. Restriction/binge cycles aren't the only way overconsumption of food manifests. I'm one of those people who can't have certain food items living in my house all of the time because I will fixate on them. Am I banned from eating them forever? No. My rule is that I'm allowed to have those items whenever I want, but I have to go buy them. They're not allowed to be staple foods in my home. If it's a snack item, I'll buy it in the portion I want to eat it in, no questions asked. If I have an endless supply of hyper palatable foods and snacks, then that's what I'm going to eat instead of healthier options--even if those are still tasty. And since I'm no longer eating those hyper-palatable snack foods every day, I don't crave them as often. This has actually given me more control. No foods are off limits, but I don’t have unlimited access to them. Also, health-swapping foods that are binge/overconsumption triggers can be super helpful for satisfying whatever that craving was without going into a psychological tailspin. And health swapping isn't by itself indicative of food restricting.

I totally agree with you. That video also annoyed me. I agree with her that if you really want a certain (high calorie - low nutrition) food then it is probably best just to eat a small amount in moderation, but that may not be possible for everyone. I can't have certain sweet foods freely available in the house without over consuming them. I also find, same as you, that what works for me is to buy them in the small snack size quantity that I want to eat. If a large portion is in the house I'll eat it, not all in one go, but bit by bit until it's all gone in a day or two. If the sweet food is in the house for my husband or kids I ask them to hide it away, so it is not freely available, maybe pathetic, but I think it is self awareness. And allowing myself a reasonable moderate portion of the food every now and then or even daily (which I do) doesn't prevent me over indulging if it is in bulk in the house. Better to know yourself and not have to constantly fail at fighting temptation

I changed my diet and I stopped craving chips and most candies, because they started tasting very chemical. I still eat dark chocolates and sweet baked goods. The way I stopped enjoying those others foods though was by not buying them anymore. I just didn't keep them around the house and I still enjoyed food. At first I missed them, but that passed quickly. Whenever I visit a certain family member, she always buys candies and chips whenever she does groceries and she finishes them within two days. Just because they are there.

I think this is a great mindset to have. My mom restricted sugar from me and my sister a lot when we were younger so when I got to uni I craved sugary things a lot more, and had the ability to go and get it myself without judgement. So to combat over indulging in that, I wouldn't buy those things every week. I'd rationalise it as an unnecessary cost which helped considering I was a student.

I feel like the Taylor Swift situation also applies to many social situations nowadays. I’m an average-sized person who has struggled with an ED for 5+ years (since I was 13/14). I am terrified of gaining weight, I am terrified of being fat. But I can’t express those disordered thoughts/worries at the risk of being called fatphobic. I feel horrible, I feel like a horrible person. I don’t want to be fatphobic, but I still have these horrible thoughts. It’s like now I have to deal with these disordered thoughts AND the guilt of having them.

  • @shortandsquare

Food swap options have given me a lot more food freedom than avoiding it. I'm not disordered for getting Halo Top instead of Ben & Jerry's, I'm avoiding the massive calories and upset stomach. Getting small bags of chips are better for managing my binging because I still get to eat an entire bag. Thin crust pizza or cauliflower let's me have my own pizza or ½ of one (9/10 that's what the binge wants). All are healthier for me. Neither effects Friday Nights when we watch movies.
If my relationship is ruined because I AM having cookies made with stevia... I don't want that person anyways. That's incredibly narcissistic.

There's a huge difference between sharing an experience to educate others and hopefully drive change compared to competing for the most oppressed in society award.
Swift was sharing her experience, in a way that she knows how - via her art. She shouldn't have to minimalise her experience at all. It is jarring seeing that image, and I think she needs to be extra careful about how she communicates because of young female fans potentially interpreting her message harmful, but she owes fat acceptance activists and society precisely nothing.
If Swift was just a drama chaser, this would have different connotations. She's not - and the furore over this detracts from a very important fact - even 'perfect' looking girls are pressured to look a certain way by the industry and society in general. This is where I take issue with activists snapping back at her - it seems much more like jealousy than genuine concern.

In fact, I've said something similar to, "The stress is more unhealthy than the food itself. Just eat it and chill!" like this person says. But obviously this isn't universal. Not everyone's relationship with food is identical. I can't make prescriptions for others, and everyone needs to make their own way and do what they need to do. The 20 percent where I take issue is mainly with her tone. If people want an artist to express themselves, they have to also understand that expression may sometimes make them uncomfortable or challenge things they think. I do think Taylor Swift has done problematic things in the past (whether you agree or not, we can keep it moving) and I have no particular like for her to an extreme, but there is no way she deserved this kind of backlash over her portraying her very own real and valid feelings and something she dealt with. I don't think she did anything wrong with that music video and find it crazy that this is what someone could pull away from what she was showing.

"When your 'fat creator' start posting stuff about weight loss". So the only thing they liked about them was that they are/were fat and nothing else. Like the personality doesn't melt away just because they drop some kilograms.

I was sad about Taylor swift taking the scale part down, if anything she was a victim of fatphobia and ED and I felt identified with her, let’s face it, we were taught that fat is bad and the worst thing you can be and NOWADAYS is consider neutralnormal/good when we’re already adults with a mindset of fatfhobia that’s extremely hard to let behind
    I’m considered skinny but I
deal with body dysmorphia, had an ED and my lowest was below 100lbs scared of gaining weight
I don’t get to feel identified with an artist I love just because I’m not fat? I get so mad when fat activists say we can’t talk about our problems because we’re not fat

I think people also forget that when Taylor was first in the spotlight, pop culture did villianize the word fat. If you look at like any celebrity magazine from that era there would be covers calling any female celebrity fat, reguardless of their actual size. That kind of stigma stuck for a lot of people, and not just larger people.

i get so confused when fat activists talk about how “not wanting to be fat is fatphobic” and “feeling fat isn’t a bad thing” but in the same breath will talk about the oppression, struggles, and prejudice that supposedly come with being being fat. like why would anybody want that?

that woman b*tching about how others don't wanna keep junk food in the house and how that's sooooo bad is totally missing the point. NOT keeping junk in the house means you will gravitate towards the other foods you do have (actual meals and not processed snacks, for example). nobody is saying to cut things out completely but let's be honest, eating a whole tub of ice cream or bag of chips or whatever in one sitting IS a PROBLEM. overeating large quantities of processed food IS a problem. these behaviors have been normalized by our society and companies purposely make processed foods as addicting as possible. the people who choose not to keep junk in the house are the ones who know if it's there, they'll gobble up a whole pack instead of eating in moderation!

Hello! just wanted to say that in the second video the woman is talking about not demonizing food but normalizing it instead (because it usually leads to eating less of it), which is something a lot of people with disorder eating struggle with and also a major source of binging. I don't think she was against the swap but more like the idea that food is inherently wrong. Also, it seems to me that the video is more directed to people that struggle with anorexia/ bulimia and binge eating rather than morbidly obese people, but I could be wrong here idk! Also, I love your work and your personality, you always do really good videos ^ ^ have a nice day

Not me sitting here with my peanut butter health swap as a snack 😂… but I am enjoying it. I eat Smuckers all natural PB now and it’s super good. As I cut sugar out of my diet things are tasting sweet that used to not taste sweet. So at first it was weird to get used to but now it’s yum.

You have a good point about the praise thing. Imagine someone was mentioning that they wanted to tackle climbing Mt Everest or writing a book or starting a garden, and their dear friend just... didn't respond or brushed them off. Once again, FAs making other people's experiences all about themselves.

  • @Laf631

"feeling fat" is totally a thing. Still can't get over FAs getting THAT angry over someone else struggling with an eating disorder and making it all about themselves. As if Taylor Swift had anorexia AT you.

I have an aunt who is the freaking best aunty ever, and I’ve always wanted to be like her, she’s beautiful and successful. She’s also a bigger woman, and in our family, there’s a serious pressure to be thin, and I’m sure that’s caused her stress because it has for me and I’ve always been thin. She has started a weight loss journey, and although I love my aunty at any size and don’t see anything wrong with being big, I know she wants to do this for her well being and health so when she posts about it ( mostly on platforms that me and some close people only look at) I congratulate her on the weight she’s lost, even small bits, because I just love the fact that my aunt shared that with us and is proud of herself. If someone shares their journey with u it’s because they want support, not to be ignored. I assume if someone doesn’t talk about their weight loss that they don’t want me to speak on it so I never give unsolicited compliments or comments like that, and I do agree those can be un called for and damaging, but when someone is asking for your support, you should give it to them and be happy that they are caring for themselves. Seems so shitty to just brush off your friends who share their journey with u. That’s my thoughts, sorry for the long paragraph
