Steve Allen played piano for Jack Kerouac
He was very hip and forward looking he championed people who would never get on TV in the early sixties

The composer John Cage did a similar composition called Walk Water on a show called I’ve Got A Secret
Cage was a huge influence on 20 th Century Music including FZ

Steve Allen basically invented the late night talk show and everyone from Johnny Carson to Steve Colbert owe their careers to what he started. He is one of many early TV pioneers who were often multi talented and already successful entertainers. It’s not too surprising that he would have a young Frank on his show.

Props to you, also, for recognizing Steve Allen's openness to having Frank & his bicycle on.

The Steve Allen show was way ahead of his time. He was a Renesas man. Musician, author, comedy and actor. I was 13 in 1963 and I watched this show with my Dad. Brings back good memories.

Zappa got himself invited again around 1968 with The Mothers - with long hair and his signature mustache combo. The tapes from that show are gone, but according to some people who watched that show at that time, Steve Allen talked down on Frank because of the way he looked.

In '63 Zappa was talking about composing for a 55 piece orchestra. He was always a composer first. So...spokes and fenders and squeaky seats are just notations on a score. Hilarious clip. Blessings.

At this time in 1963, Frank was living in a studio called "Studio Z" in Cucamonga, California. This was a year before the Mothers of Invention were formed. He was putting out local records (a handful of which can be found on TH-cam) and was known in the area as the "local studio guy". A year later in 1964, his studio would raided by the police and many of his tapes would be confiscated and lost forever, and he would be sent to jail being charged with "conspiracy to commit pornography" for 30 days. Anyways, thanks for checking this out, Rory; this is one of my favorite pieces of Zappa media!

If you ever listened to any Varese, who Zappa claimed as an early influence, this chaos would make perfect sense. I had never seen this in it's entirety, it was hilarious and instructive.

Frank realized early on that the exposure you can get by being on tv is far beyond any exposure you can get from marketing, so he focused on that, and it became a mainstay for him. As for the point of playing the bicycle, Frank believed that any sound could be incorporated into a musical piece, so he demonstrated that here. Glad you enjoyed this Rory!

Love the channel, new sub here! You are missing out on so much, well most people are LOL. Love the sound garden reactions by the way! Could you please check out Finger Eleven Good Times. Finger Eleven has so many bangers. As well please check out Big Wreck The Oaf. Another underrated band, sounds like cornel, incredible live singer!

This was ayear after Frank had scored his first movie The World's Greatest Sinner which he just called the worlds worst movie is now a cult classic and well worth a gander, it gives a taste of what frank was writing four years before Freak Out. The story lines not bad, but the cheap budget cheap cameras crappy acting and crappy production are epic! The soundtracks actually decent, it's painfully obvious that God Hilliard (Tim Carey) isn't playing anything close on the guitar to what Frank put down on the soundtrack.

I think this was a gimmick to get on TV. Whatever it takes right
