    Hannibal studied Pyrrhus' Memoirs before going to war against Rome. apparently that book was so replete with cunning strategems and tactics that Hannibal became too dependent on it and had the same problem Pyrrhus had, no overall strategic objective which was always obviously to take Rome.

      Hannibal had a strategy, it was to break Rome down into a bunch of polities through coercion and promises (freedom from the hegemony of Rome, trade) . All the time he spent ravaging Italy though and only one city switched over to his side (the name escapes me). His grand strategy didn't help. Carthage refusing to give him reinforcements didn't help either but the core of the strategy was to sever Rome from the rest of the Latins and eventually force Rome to surrender or simply destroy it once most of the other Latin cities in Italy were on his side.
      The problem was that his strategy was out of date. Rome went through a civil war (called the Social War) over this exact issue - over 100 years before Hannibal. Rome prevailed but as part of settlement gave the rest of the Latins citizenship and more rights. All the resentment had mostly faded by the time Hannibal rolled around, and while he was able to get Syracuse and that one city to his side it wasn't nearly enough. His grand strategy was simply out of date.

    In Annibale Barca’s Diary Phyrrus was considered the second best strategic mastermind in history, only inferior to Alessandro Magno. Is a little bit of a shame that no one really remembers him, but for his named victory. With a inferior number of man he won against the Roman twice, and in the same campaign he goes to Sicily winning against Carthago too, proclaiming himself king of Sicily. He never lost a battle but he was killed in fight against Sparta, in 271. Glad to see someone who wants Phyrrus to conquered anything

      Pyyrhus is a captivating figure. He never lost a battle while losing every war.
      On a tactical level, he was truly brilliant. On a strategic level, he was an absolute cluster fuck.

      I remembered reading about him somewhere wherein he slashed a pirate so hard in a duel that he basically split the man in half and terrified the surrounding audience with his incredible strength.

    • @Pawsk
      @Pawsk 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@blakeboles2848 He really wasnt that bad on a strategic level either, his biggest fuck up was a group of mercenaries raiding Pella while he wasnt around.
      Pyrrhus managed to challenge rome and Marcedon while in reality not having an army or the support of a state.
