    As for the price of meat today, the last time I bought a pound of bacon it was $14.24!!! And that wasn't the most expensive brand - All I can say about that is: "LETS GO BRANDON!" The garden is coming along fine, but I'm a little behind in my tilling of Zone B - I had stressed my right elbow and had to let it heal, so I just now got finished with Zone A. If the weather holds, I'll be tilling and re-installing drip tape, and at least two 30' double rows will be onions. Y'all have taught me well, and I've had success growing onions at my old house, even though I had a lot of shade. This year, I expect to have a much better crop, as the garden will be in full sun.

    The price of beef has tripled but the cattle prices have remained reletively the same the problem is the processing costs then the supermarket takes it cut. Has anyone ever thought about processing a beef yourself I have and about to do it again. You could do one for 3 dollars a pound in the freezer something to think about.

    They just changed our zone from 4b to 5a. I planted onions in greenhouse before last winter and had onions in the spring. I will do this again but also plant outside in my raised garden beds. Trying different varieties to see which grows best. You can never have too much garlic or too many onions

    Everyone please, if you’re going to be skinning or butchering wild hogs, wear rubber gloves. Some of them carry diseases that can take years to manifest and are very debilitating. It is my understanding that it can be prevented by simply wearing rubber gloves. Stay safe folks.

    I'm in zone 8b. I sowed a trey of Texas legend and Savannah Sweet on September 1. They are emerging today. Sept. 7. about four seeds per cell in a 162 tray. They are outside on a table that gets five hours of direct sun. Do I need to shade them? Also, when should I expect to transplant them to bedded rows?

    Great video! I always tell new gardeners in the deep south never to buy onion "sets" at the big box stores because half the time they aren't labelled and often end up being long-day varieties that don't bulb here. I always tell people to start onions from seed, and to buy seeds from a reputable Southern company like Hoss Tools. I lost some of my onions to rot last spring because of all the rain we had, but the couple of onions I had in fabric root pouches were the size of grapefruits. I put the Row by Row Garden Show sticker on my truck! Happy fall planting yall, keep up the great work

    • @gardeningwithhoss
      @gardeningwithhoss  ปีที่แล้ว

      You can count back the correct number of weeks for your seeds from the first expected frost date in your area. If the plant is frost hearty, you can. Most of the root veggies, can be direct seeded.

      Anything that loves Nitrogen, like corn. I don't give that much N to most "general" garden crops, like beans, peas, tomatoes, etc. I've found that with too much N, you get a jungle of foliage and less fruit. Of Course, you could use it sparingly on most anything.

    The problem with bulbing onions grown in zone 8b/9a is they're all sweet onions; virtually none of them dry. I don't care how you store them, they don't store more than 60 days without spoiling.

  • @gogogardener
    @gogogardener 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I suggest a bit difference advice for your 8b and 9 customers. Green onions can be grown any time of year in these zones, but I choose not to sow seeds in Fall. The reason is that I sow short day onions then. I transplanted green onions in early Fall, for Winter use. Also in early Fall, I sowed seeds for short day onions Then, Like you, in late Fall, I plant short day onions close and then thin the thinner short day onions for 'green onions' around Easter.... About time I run low on the real green onions. I love how versatile green onions are for filling in harvest gaps in my allium crops.

In any case, I bought the Hoss Tools driptape system and injector and also got those taps for each driptape run. My main fertilizer is Jack's all purpose 20:20:20 + TE and ammonia sulphate that leafy greens like. As I have a small space, my rows usually end up with mixes of crops. What's the best rate for the 20:20:20 as a general safe amount for all veggies via injector every two weeks or so?

    Greg, do you ever grow a small patch of Peanuts ? I have three rolls about 15 ft. long, of Virginia Jumbo's. Their looking real good. Some plants are 2ft tall. Should I dig them after the frost kills the plant or when the leaves yellow ? ( This is my first time growing them )

    • @Lochness19
      @Lochness19 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I grew mine for the first time this year and pulled half when they were yellow and some pods were ready but many others won't, so I think I'll leave the rest in until frost. Keep in mind that many critters will like to eat the leaves - if you have those sorts of problems with beans, peas and the like, you can expect to have the same problems with peanuts (part of why mine yielded poorly is they kept getting chewed back).

    If we plant onions in the fall, how do we winterize them for the winter?

  • @ericheithoff2006
    @ericheithoff2006 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Love the show! Elliot Coleman once said that each layer of protection from plastic would change the temperature inside to the same as roughly 500 miles south. I'm in zone 5b. Do you think it would be possible to grow short day onions in a high tunnel/unheated greenhouse with another low tunnel plastic cover over each row, and fabric row cover over the onions under the low tunnel? Or do you think they need the heat? If I'm right, I think we could transplant at the same time that we would plant garlic in the fall, and have a crop of sweet onions ready in the spring.

    • @ericheithoff2006
      @ericheithoff2006 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      This might also mean that it would be possible to grow long day onions in the south in the summer using shade cloth.

      interesting. I know a guy in zone 6 that has grown short day onions successfully in a hoop house on plastic mulch. Probably not for the beginner gardener, but worth trying.
