- Life with an Ostomy bag. After having ileostomy surgery from ulcerative colitis infecting my colon.
In this video I talk about what it's like to have an Ostomy Bag. Luckily, I only have a temporary ostomy bag but I am hoping my advice would help those in worse cases. I cover how to change an ostomy bag as well as general stoma care. Please forgive me guys, I recorded this video back in the day when I was perhaps a little camera shy and I do tend to talk a little bit of waffle due to nerves... lol
But either way I'm hoping this helps you over come the anxieties that come with having stoma surgery or any other ostomy related problems.

I've had this all my life (26 years) and never once had the bravery to tell anyone I know, let alone post it on TH-cam. You sir, are a legend. It's actually reassuring to see someone similar to myself talking about this (British too, I seem to only find American vloggers). I hope all is well now dude, and that you're back on track. How do I cope with it? Right now it sucks! Having major issues, in all honesty I want it gone! Sounds silly saying this after 26 years, but it's gotten to the point where I want my life back! I understand it works perfectly for some people and gives them a renewed life, but sadly not for me.

Once your stoma quite shrinking, it'll always be the same size. At this time you can ask your suppliers to pre cut your stoma hole and not need scissors anymore.

Anyway, I think it's really brave of you to make a video like this, and I love how you can put some humor into it. I was diagnosed with colorectal cancer when I was 20 years old, and had many sessions of chemo and radiation for about four years and was finally in remission. I was so excited that I was clear, that I didn't realize the havoc the treatments caused my body (mostly my large intestine). I've since been struggling with I can only describe as IBS times 1000. I go through periods of time where I'm okay, however, my life revolves around visits to my GI doctor and using the bathroom. For almost three years after being in remission, I'm still suffering, and my doctors suggested thinking about getting an ostomy.
I was really open to the idea, especially after a recent "accident" where I was standing in the queue at the bank and had to pass gas. I didn't feel anything, but the guy behind me said "there's blood dripping down your leg!" It was a lot of blood, and by a lot, I mean to the point where I felt faint. He took his sweatshirt and wrapped it around me and walked me to my car, where he called an ambulance. After that event, I was thrown into depression, where I quit my job and stayed in my room for weeks.
I started thinking about the osotomy seriously, and am still seriously considering it. I've done tons of research and heard many stories of people similar to mine who's lifestyle significantly improved after getting the procedure. I was just wondering your thoughts (or any thoughts). I am open to anyone's opinion.

I am so sorry for the late response but that is incredible! for one that guy was awesome for helping you out I can't believe that happened though! personally I wouldn't know how to cope if I had blood dripping down my legs without knowing! It's good that guy was actually decent and told you other than let you continue like it! Have you come to a conclusion on what you want to do next? have you got the bag? Trust me it also comes with a lot of benefits... I was able to skip every line at Thorpe Park because of the "inconvenience" :)... but also I too went into depression after having the bag, to the point that it wasn't only affecting me but the people around me. But with counselling and the support from my friends and family I was able to fight through it and here I am today all happy go lucky again!
No worries! No need to apologize for a late response. Any response at all is extremely nice of you! I have not gotten the bag yet, but I have got some consultations. I'm in the US and my insurance will only cover 80% of the cost of the procedure itself (anesthesia, staying in the hospital for recovery, tests/labs, medications, etc... they are all out of pocket) so it's a lot to digest.. no pun intended. I'm pretty sure that I am going to go ahead with the procedure, but after Christmas/New Years, so I have time to recover in peace.
I still have some questions/concerns that I haven't been able to find answers to. Like, for example, I am about your size, except less muscle. With the bag, would it be more difficult to gain weight and muscle? Is it difficult to exercise with the bag? Also, does the stoma itself hurt? Is it sensitive to touch? And my final question is about intimacy. You said your girlfriend was very supportive, which is awesome. My boyfriend is also pretty supportive of everything, but I'm afraid the bag will change how we are when we get intimate. We like to touch a lot. I'm just wondering, does the bag stay on? Is it okay to take off for a little while when I'm "in bed"? Do I have to worry about stuff coming out of the stoma when the bag is not on? Will I be aware of the stoma "emptying" when or before it happens? Or will it just empty without me feeling anything?

sdesai1989 I'm in the same situation--chronic radiation enteritis, getting progressively worse to the point I really can't leave the house any longer. And my insurance situation is the same--very frustrating. I want to absorb some of the positive attitude of Jack Atkins here. I'm not in a good place right now and my doc says this might help, it just seems like one more thing to deal with when my health plate is already full. I suppose there are quite a few advantages as well. I wonder...if my problem is not only the bathroom, but also the extreme indigestion and pain, does that go away as well with an Ostomy bag?

Ps - when I was on prednisone, I was a monster too, I'm amazed my hubby and family still speak to me! It's a horrible medication, and because of it, I now had osteoporosis and osteoarthritis! But they don't you about the side effects until afterwards. Because of it, I've have to have surgery on both shoulders and both hands too, such a piss off! Btw, great video!
Dude, your my hero! I am so active I sometimes break or leak 2 bags a day. I have to carry 2 changes if clothes all the time. Love your humor!

I have u.c and i am not at the point where i need surgery yet but my treatment options are sort of limited and i understand that surgery may be an option down the road in the near future and being able to see videos like this is really helping me cope with that fact! keep doing what you are doing.
Such a positive and good sense of humor about your bag and I love it! I have a bag as well! I always feel awkward explaining it to people but this made me feel so comfortable about it! I'm hopefully getting mine reversed within the next month! Hope all is well!

I like you're attitude. I hope you continue making vlogs like this. I don't have a colostomy but I have many other health issues and up beat blogs with explanations and how to's really makes a big difference. Hell. I bet this video has helped at least one person. Plus it's helped me gain insight on this as well.. My step grandma has an ilieostomy which is similar but on the other side, so its always great to learn more about things in my life that effect others people I know as well. Keep up the great work mate! And stay strong and live your life and most of all, stay as healthy as you can be.

You have really lifted my spirits because I just got one and I am 59 years old. To watch your video and see you so young, hot, full of life and uplifting brought my spirits WAY up! I've had 3 accidents since I've been home and just got more and more into self pity and when you told about yours, I felt like cleaning the bathroom AGAIN. My friend gave me a good idea of changing it in the bathtub. It's amazing how small it looks in the bag but apparently a little shit can go a long way :( Thank you for cheering me up :)
I’m just after having my permanent colostomy done a month ago - thanks for sharing. I’m paralysed and do manage my own bag changing but the farting is a real pain in the stoma as at least the wheelchair cushion muffled it a bit but not anymore, lol! Your a great character and good luck with the reversal - I don’t have that option as most of it’s gone now. Keep up the great videos your a great character. Talk soon, MarkC

I wish I had the creativity and bravery to have done this, following rectal cancer in 2012 at the age of 37 I ended up with a permanent colostomy. Hat off to you, your stories are true for all new stoma patients as they adjust to their new function, yes, it's depressing and makes you angry and then you realise those around you that care for you and remain to support you. I too have awoken to comment to my wife "why do you have shit on your nose!". I just showed her this video and we were both crying with laughter, WELL DONE and thank you for no doubt helping may others. Life moves on, you can manage and you do adjust.

I try my best to make a fool out of myself but sometimes it just comes naturally... without even controlling it ;) haha but yeah back to the ostomy point, yeah It was a funny point in my life having it! Great video, I am a fairly new ostomy patient, March 2014. I live a normal life. Some people can't believe it when I tell them I have one. I share and even let them see it so they understand more about it. I had colon cancer and I'm cancer free now. Thank you for sharing. Kerrie

I am 21 and have recently had surgery which has left me with a stoma, I am finding it hard to adjust and I am terrified that it will be for life as I am only 2 weeks in I’m soo amazed you are as confident as you are and quite frankly jealous hahaha

My mum has just had a permanent one fitted after everthing had to be remove because of cancer. Your video was great and has inspired us. Learning to laugh and have a sense of humour really helps.

I know you hate having a stoma. Which I do too. I've had mine now for about 2 yrs. now. I. finally found a bag that doesn't leak, like my my old one did. But I Still have accidents where my poop ends up on me and on the toilet and on the bathroom floor. When I go to empty it. Especially when I do it in the middle of the night and I'm half asleep. It is a pain in the butt. ( no pune contented)
But hang in there it does get easier!
You should sit on toilet in case it leaks out some when you are changing it. Also there are a lot of different products out there that helps with leaks or whatever you are dealing with. So hang in there it does get better.
So I like your video, but I. can tell you still have a lot to learn. And you will! from one stoma person to another...Good luck!

This video is absolute gold. Today my grandfather had a colostomy and it was so hard to see him go through that because he had no other option. This really cheered me up and I can teach him how to use his bag 😁

He actually just passed away yesterday. The infection that took his colon ended up spreading. 😧 but he's not in pain anymore and he was always such a positive and wonderful person to be around so I'm sure he wouldn't want us to be too sad. I keep watching your video cuz it really cheers me up. Thanks for that!

ATTACHING POUCH:
1. LBF Barrier spray around stoma
2. Paste around stoma
3. Paste around inside adhesive hole of pouch
4. Pouch, tight fit; 15-25mm, push down hard around stoma, especially up underneath (lift bottom of pouch up), get ring flat on stomach!
5. Elastic tape X2 around edge of pouch (use 2 extra top/bottom if extra activity) - Absolute key if going swimming.

Oh man, the steroids turned me evil too. ;) I like how you explained your surgery and whatnot. Just remember; a colostomy is using your colon, an ileostomy is using your small intestine (the generic term for all types is 'ostomy'). I can't wait to see more videos :)

No problem! The media always reports it as a colostomy as the generic term, which doesn't help! ;) I was in hospital for two weeks in Feb 2010 (blood transfusions, antibiotics, fluids, vitamins, Modulen, steroids & Azathioprine) and then for a month in March-April 2010 recovering from the operation (problems with my mid-line wound popping back open... yummy...)
Yeah I was I had mine since I was 18 and I am going to get it reversed in April for the second time the firs time it was bad and they had to but the bag back on and I had about five surgeries so many crap surgeries just had some bad luck but I am hoping in my sixth surgery goes well in April

Video made me cry. I have very young children and my colitis is terrible for a while now. Once the opp happens I worry that my little ones will not be able to jump on me due to getting covered in shit. I am so sorry you went through that with your girlfriend. Credit to you for being so honest.
Hey man, don't you worry it is definitely not as difficult as you may think! There are things you may need to be wary of... Like the bag filling up with air because of passing gas and what not but it really isn't that difficult! Please keep me updated on how you do! Xx

I have Crohn’s disease and I have had surgery on surgery I ended up with sepsis and ended up in emergency surgery and woke up with a colostomy bag. They say it’s temporary but I am so much happier and healthy with it! Even though it took forever to come to grips and adjust it was a major blessing in disguise

Bud I'm 31 And just had a proctocolectomy due to colorectal cancer and it beats the hell out of having chronic pain from a blockage and getting rid of the cancer was great too I'm glad reversal is possible but you can live well with this if you have too keep positive thank you for making me laugh you got a great attitude

I've had an ostomy for almost 8 months, however my surgery went horribly wrong and my wound still hasn't healed. every time my ostomy leaks, it leaks into my open wound which obviously makes me freak out. so out of necessity I got really good, really fast at applying bags.
I had a stoma around 3 moths ago now and really hurts when I change it but it helps a lot because before I felt like dieing it hurt so much:-(
Hi Jack, my brother was sadly diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis today, and he's been put on a HUGE amount of medication including steroids. If the medication doesn't work they have given him the option to remove the colon and have the baggy thingy to get rid of waste externally.
I have a few questions if you have the time you could maybe answer for me?:
1) Does this effect you going swimming ( such as on holiday), and if not what can be done to cover up the intestine?
2) Half way through 2015, are there different ways once the colon is removed to get rid of waste NOT externally? So he doesn't have to use the bag?
3) Were you put on medication such as steroids, and if so did you put on a lot of wait but lose it again very quickly? Lastly:
4) If the colon is removed, I know that the ulcerative colitis will be gone. Does that mean the chance of getting bowel cancer reduces?

I've had ulcerative colitis for 7 months now. I found that living life as normally as possible, whilst taking Health Aids 5000mg Aloe Vera capsules, probiotics and making myself a juice from organic Carrots, Apples and Napa cabbage have made my symptoms so bare able that I'm pretty much back to complete normality. I take no medicine or drugs AT ALL. Also, believe it or not, smoking just 4 cigarettes a day will completely suppress the symptoms, possibly even cure Ulcerative colitis. Nicotine does something that no one can work out. Only 2% of ALL Ulcerative colitis sufferers are smokers, the rest are non smokers. And only 4 cigarettes a day will hardly effect your health at all.

I don't know if you have figured this out but if you eat marshmallows before you change the bag the output doesn't come out as much, when you wash it in the shower if you use head 'n shoulders then it helps with the skin.

hey! I'm now 48 and I've had a colostomy since I was 30. Sometimes I have issues with it , but I think you like myself and probably others find humour with this change in our bodies! just wish they sometimes don't sound like a crisp packet! 😂🤗

That's a good question because usually your body absorbs everything from your large intestine... I mean a bit is still taken away from you small intestine just your large one takes most of it. I was advised by my surgeon to eat more and try and try more fluids !
I have chrons disease and I almost had to get one cause I was extremely inflamed but since I’m in high school my dad didn’t want to put me through that while I’m still in school but it’s gotten really bad again and if my infusion doesn’t help this Thursday then I may have to get a colostomy bag

I watched this video last night, I never had the problem of my bag like exploding but literally after watching this, it exploded when I laid on it 😂 thank you for making this, had I not watched this, I would have handled that situation much worse than I did, I'm very new to an ileostomy, but in one month I will have it reversed 🙏🏽🙏🏽
+Suriah felix it happened to me atleast 2-3 times a month... I was useless with it hahaha but you live and you learn and I soon got used to it! I've had it reversed also now so all is good! Good luck in the reversal though keep me updated!

Jack Atkins i had my stoma reversed and I'm now 100% okay besides the uncontrollable gas and learning how to fart again!😂 I hope all is well with you!

Carli smith I don't know why he had it for a year, but I've had my ostomy for a while because of surgical complecations. things need to heal and settle down before you can attempt a successful reversal.
I agree with everyone else here, really brave and heroic to make this video. Can I ask you something though, and you don't have to answer, but what are the biggest challenges with something like this? Can you live a normal life, or is there some things you need to be extra careful of?
My son should get and Ostomy reversal. Will he be able to poop properly after?

I know it's been a while, and thought I'd let you know how things went :D I didn't end up getting one, even though it came very close. It was due to a complication that I encounter every so often that my washouts weren't working (I have an ACE for my bowel issues). All is well now, thank God, lmao :) Hope you're okay!
@@jackatkins I was able to recover slowly and no longer have my ACE stoma! It was one hell of a journey, but I wouldn't take it back for anything.
1 month with this bag and I feel super depressed. I can’t sleep and feel so terrible everyday. I’m told 6months to get it reversed and it feels like that’s so far away.
Hi Jack, love the video! I have an ileostomy as well which is temporary, I was diagnosed with crohn's disease. Are you on any meds for it? I was put on Humira to calm it down for my reversal

Well I had it last january, I'd spent Christmas eve, Christmas, new years and my birthday in hospital. Finally got a reversal date I'm in Christmas eve to have it done, nice Christmas present for me! Haha Can't wait! How long did it take you to recover after your reversal?

I had started to have lower back problems that I thought were a result of work.Line of work is rough.However,it began to spread to below my waist down to my lower crotch.My sitting began to be uncomfortable.I let that go for months.Than one day I got what I thought was the flu.However it lingered for several weeks.My right leg began to swell.I became unmovable.I was rushed into surgery.Once in the morning.Another one later the next day.I ended up with a collostomy bag.It really was painless.However,I was in the hospital for two months.I really became accustomed to being there.The being taken care of,I suppose.I left.And had a training team of nurses support for several months.It was rough wearing it out,due to possible accidents.Im lactose intolerant.I learned the hard way,the first and last time.My love life went down the tubes.Nobody knew till I told them,so yeah,it probably would've weirded me out,too.However,after all was said and done,I had my reversal.I am one of the lucky few.I know the interruptions it causes.And my hope for everyone,that they can recover from whatever ailment they face.It was a brief time in my life.However,time is never over.Godbless.
I have IBS and its painful at times acually all the time. I'm gonna ask my doctor if I can get one of these done cause my problem comes on at any time of the day no warning it sucks ....I'm afraid to leave my house.
Cori, I haven't looked back since getting a Stoma.
Times were bad with Crohns flare up and dealing with it everyday for years. Like many people, having a Stoma is a great relief to the body and you can feel "normal" again.

I feel you on many levels I'm 23 and I've had a colostomy bag my whole life I also wear adult diapers cause I can't control my bladder so I have a small stoma to let the urine out. I'm just now trying to connect to people with this issue. I have a drawstring bag I take everywhere with me with my colostomy supplies and extra diapers also the draw string bag is handy when I have too much stuff. When my bag leaks or gives me issues I'm like 😒😒😒 again I'm only pissed cause I'm wasting my time on it. I used to freak out when I was a kid I would break down crying. Much love for u bro. I have the HD ultra clear vison bag 😂 shit don't bother me anymore

QUESTION : I also have UC and will probably be getting a permanent bag instead of the internal pouch. Is it worth it?
Hmm, that is a tricky one... So it's between the bag permanent or the pouch. I haven't really ever experienced the pouch, however there are some people on here who have had that experience. It's hard to say really, if the doctor has given you two options go with A first then B if A doesn't work out? Perhaps go for the pouch first then if that doesn't work out for you then go back to the bag? the bag isn't that bad to live with :)
Jack Atkins That's what I've heard too. I've also heard that with the internal pouch, that you'd poop about 5 or so times a day, and deal with pouchitis. That is something I would NOT look forward to.
Also, how many times would you have to change the bag per day?
