So what I’m getting from your summary is that: In this world we’re in Mankind has gone to shit as nothing but grief and despair ravage the land as everyone begs either for forgiveness for what they had to do to survive or demands punishment for those who have wronged them. Hearing these overwhelming cries for penance some entity is spawned or responds by sending the miracle to punish them for their sins. At first it goes well as people are being rightly punished for their sins but then the entity or the miracle itself decides to communicate with one of the humans. This starts a religion of Masochism similar to Christianity but the priests get more and more corrupt as it seems that those who follow in the footsteps of his holiness do not undergo the punishment of the miracle as if it were playing favorites. While they are still punished it’s almost never as bad as those who are not part of the congregation so more and more join and soon the Miracle or the entity sees the corruption within the church and stops communicating with the church. This leads to an age where no one is being punished for their misdoings as they all cry out for it. This leads to the age of the turned throne where because Escrobar believes that the miracle has stopped punishing people meaning he could whatever he wants. The cries of the people and the sins of the church then pile up and the miracle sends the biggest punishment they’ve ever seen like a Masochist begging the Sadist to “Hurt me more daddy”. Resulting in Escrobar becoming a tree, being revived and given a form that supposed to torment him for all the sins he’s committed and the release of a horde of monsters that ravage the land killing or torturing the humans. After decades of fighting and torture the people’s cries turn to those of forgiveness rather than punishment so the entity allows the miracle to stop only if they can climb the pile of ash and regain control of the turned throne. Many try and none succeed until we get to our protagonist. Ending 1: Even though he was chosen by the miracle to take the throne the sins of the people are to great to overlook and he fails letting the punishment of Humanity continue forever. Ending 2: The penintant one manages to climb the hill of ash as this means that humanity’s worthy of forgiveness and so kills himself in order to seal away the miracle but Castanta wants the punishment of humanity to continue and so pulls the sword out of him hoping this would break the seal and let the Punishment continue.

Just an FYI, this video was made before the Stir Of Dawn and Wounds of Eventide DLCs came out, both of which added some story stuff that didn't exist yet when this video was made. Wounds of Eventide added a whole new ending to the game which is covered in its own video which you can watch here: th-cam.com/video/K9V5aBK9XI8/w-d-xo.html Stir of Dawn didn't change the story in any significant way, just added some context to help with understanding it. My question stands, did we just get a "loop ending"? As if the story is in an endless cycle that cannot stop, and only will repeat. Great video, I loved the story as I am fascinated by the universe and the astetics of it. I love the OST too.
I sort of got a sense of a loop too, because even down to the audio of the sword being removed, it’s almost identical to the opening when the player gets the sword.
It’s not necessarily a time loop, but Crisandra’s actions are implied to bring back the Miracle, which would eventually attract more people to the Cradle of Affliction in the eventual outcome of finding someone to be the true Penitent One and become the next Son of the Miracle.
Thank you for making the story clear to me. When I first played Blasphemous, I wasn’t exactly sure what it was about, because the story was kinda vague. And other videos I’ve seen only explained so much. But thanks to you, now I have a somewhat full understanding of the story and what exactly is going on in this game’s world.
Yes AND no, he's the second coming of Jesus. They already had a Jesus figure before the Penitent One, he's called The Twisted One and he's the guy doing the 8 figure pose on the wooden pole you see in the background during the first level.
Wait, Is shovel Knight joke canon In blasphemous? Cause that would technically mean That God of war and blasphemous can take place in the same universe, just not realm I assume. A God of war and Blasphemous crossover sounds amazing now that I think about it.
I love this game a whole lot, but a bug that happened to me really deflated my will to finish it myself. So thank you for collecting the lore so I could understand the points I was missing.
Lol. Hope you enjoyed the video! Thanks so much for watching! They may take a while, but there will be more videos to come, so there will be more voice! :)
The lore of Blasphamous reminds of From Software's Dark Soul Games. I really love these kinds of lores even tho i couldnt understand it fully it still fascinates me.
This game's world and story is so interesting, but I don't think I'd have ever played it because it would just be too hard to be enjoyable. Thank you for making this video so I can experience the former without having to suffer through the latter
It's not hard it's just tedious. The art is so beautiful but the game is not fun to play. I just beat Dead Cells which has amazing gameplay, so going to Blasphemous next was too big of a contrast in terms of "fun." Again, amazing art...just couldn't get into the gameplay. I don't really like Metroidvania games anyway, I prefer roguelites way more.
It's not an overly long game or terribly complex, but about half way through I realised I had no idea what I was trying to achieve. I knew what my objectives where and pretty much where I needed to go, but the language sort of made it unclear at times and I hadn't been paying quite enough attention. Smough's videos informed me a bit more after completing the game but this summary was really good. I didn't even realise that the Penitent One was actually serving the Will (or WIlls?) of the Miracle in the first place. Musta missed that part, but it makes way more sense to me now.
One of the best 2D platformers I've played. And I played a lot of them in my life. I love everything about this game, especially the OSTs. The spanish songs are masterpieces. Thank you for making this video, it's awesome! :)
thank you so, so much for this video! i just finished the game and have been struggling to understand what was actually going on around me, even at the end of the game I wasn't sure what had happened or what it meant. Your video is literally just what I needed, thanks a ton!
Late response but pretty much the entire catholic creed spins around the idea that the more you suffer, the holier you are. Jesus himself was the holiest among men since he endured not only unimaginable physical torment during his calvary, but also carried the sins of all humanity. There are many other examples of this but, yeah, pain in this world = promotion in the spiritual realm or whatever.
@@CidGuerreiro1234 Not entirely, I wouldn't say it is directly proportional, but I think if it is suffering for the benefit of others, that's kind of how it works and it means that you spend less time in purgatory.
Thanks a lot, man! I didn’t do a deep dive into this game cause Smough Town has quite a few, but I’ll probably make a few when the DLC eventually comes out!
Thank you very much! I'm not sure what game I'll be doing next, but I'll look into Detention to see if it's interesting! Thanks for the recommendation! And Thanks for watching!
I knew when I saw all the catholic symbolism that there was more to the story than I thought wished more story's would utilize such things in such a way
Haven't played this yet but I'm really intrigued by the lore so thanks for taking out the side missions so that I have at least a reason to play it for the side quests.
Great breakdown of the lore. I understood the gist of it once I finished it, regarding the true guilt saving you from being swallowed up, but I didn't understand that the mindless mobs were the original followers, swallowed up by the ash. Thanks a lot for this.
I didn't understand what was going on at first but it started making more sense the second play through. I love the way they talk in the game and the story is interesting and like no other. Really cool concept to compliment a fun and gorgeous game. You're explanation makes sense but I'm going to dig into it more.
...and I agree with your final thoughts about the story being hard to follow. I even changed the language to Spanish to see if it would be easier to follow due to the catholic aspects of the game, and while Spanish would be the ideal language suited for the iconography of the game (kinda like most anime), the story kept being hard to follow. I also thought that, since I grew up catholic and went to catholic school all my life, the story would be familiar in some sense, well, it does not lol. It just takes the penitence and suffering of catholicity into a thick mess of everything with everything on top. So thanks for the video, I enjoyed the game a lot specially the music but I wouldnt recommend it to everybody, just metroidvania fans that like gothic/dark stuff. Cheers!
I guess it's not only religion, but also a cultural thing. Me being from a catholic latin american country, the lore of the game(taking away exaggerations) its everything you were thought to fear as a child. The design and art also are very representative of the hispanic culture. This game is a true gem
...exactly like Dark Souls lol, i would say having a Catholic background probably is nowhere near as helpful for understanding this game as just having played all the Souls games would be because it does exactly what those games do, which is take basic Catholic themes and iconography and twist them using messed up characters and crazy otherworldly powers into a world of insanity, with vague remnants of religious undertones.
I really like what you've done on this channel. Your examinations and summaries are a rare blessing. If it's not too much trouble, would you consider checking out Fire Emblem Three Houses, or at least watch a bit of it? When you get past the anime aesthetic, there are interesting stories and deep, morally grey characters. Especially on the four different routes the game takes. It could really suit your style, and be a popular game to dissect.
Thanks, man! I really love storytelling and helping people understand stuff, so this is a blessing for me as well! :) Fire Emblem is actually one of my favorite series of all time! I've played most of the titles available in the US (Awakening is one of my favorite games of all time), but I don't have a Switch, so I haven't gotten around to playing Three Houses yet! I don't think I'd ever do a series on it (from what I understand, it's a looooooong game), but it's definitely on my list of games to play. Lol. Thanks again for watching this video though, man! I'm happy you enjoyed it! :)
Unfortunately not! I don't have the means to capture the footage for that. Lol. Oxenfree has been suggested a few times! I'll have to finally check it out here soon!
@@Mendax5 when zoomers became old enough to use the internet and started calling literally everything edgy because they grew up on shit like teen titans go lmao
Thank you for this summary. I will say that this is an interesting story, with a legitimately gorgeous presentation. The art style is a good blend of pixel art and religious artistry, and the orchestral score fits the setting perfectly. It’s also clear that the voice actors gave their best as well. My problem is that the whole story is told with lots of purple prose, even in the item descriptions on the inventory screen; the story becomes even more confusing with its grim-dark tone, which makes you wonder which characters are good or evil; not in a morally ambiguous way, but as basic characters. I believe this game needed to just cut out the padding and tell its story in a much simpler delivery.
I absolutely love this game's story, and art style. It is so good. Even if I don't understand fully, I still think it is remarkable. Can't wait for the second one.
In my understanding, the Miracle is this entity that is extremely pure in terms of morality, as i remember the entirety of Custodia was incredibly devious and crazy bad thus the Miracle punished them, and as in the video some people WANTED to be punished thus the Miracle did so. I remember a theory in which that the Miracle really does wanna be stopped from punishing them, thus the penitent one going to the throne, so basically you have a karma system for a god who punishes or blesses you based on what you do, and what you want it to do to you.
So I've been noticing a bit of conflicting information regarding the Miracle's intent. The Steam Page specifically mentions that the Miracle is a curse, and that seems to line up with Deogracias' explanation of The Penitent One's sacrifice in Ending A ("...and break off from the ungodly will of the Grievous Miracle"), but at the same time, why are people so eager to be punished by this entity if it's a curse? Maybe a Stockholm syndrome type of thing? I don't know - the only thing I can say (sort of as a cop out) is that Deogracias also says we cannot understand the will of the Miracle. Maybe we're not supposed to understand... But anyways, thanks for watching, man! Hope you enjoyed! :)
@@SquatchGamingChannel kool, i also believe the clergy does that based on penance thus hurting yourself and to maintain suffering in order to pay of sins
The miracle is so obviously evil. Why are you surprised by people wanting to be punished? That's literally Christianity, which this game is based on. Everyone is evil for being human alone, not even a newborn is free of sin, and you need to repent to be forgiven.
@@アドリアン-d3o You have that backwards. True Christianity is that we are forgiven if we accept Jesus; paying for our sins Himself, His gift. The ones WANTING to be punished miss the point entirely, and are actually being kind of blasphemous by not excepting Christ's sacrifice fully, and trying to earn forgiveness themselves. Spitting on the notion of a gift by trying to earn it. When it is a gift. Grace, (God's Riches At Christ's Expense)not works, but the ones wanting to be punished would rather work for it themselves, missing the point of grace entirely.
@@skeletorgames8641 Kinda right and wrong. The asian-looking usernamed was referring probably to the "old" religion (where you would be punished just by being human unless you become the slave of the church) while you are talking about the "newer" one. Basically you two have diferent interpretations.
I'll have to check it out eventually and see if it interests me! I'm not a fan of scary games though, so I'm not sure it'll happen... Thanks for the recommendation! And Thanks for watching! :)
Yeah, I guess that’s a pretty good way of breaking it down. Lol. I would say they believe that by humbling themselves before it, it will spare them from its wrath, but then that gets warped and people start believing that the pain and suffering actually indicates you’re in the favor of the entity. Thanks for watching!
That’s honestly what drew me to it in the first place. I’ve never played a game with a setting and atmosphere like it! It really is fantastic! Thanks for watching!
The Miracle is a monster. Why would anyone worship and protect such a cruel and blatantly evil creature. I'm surprised they don't spend every waking moment trying to destroy the demon.
What a fantastic explanation! You put it in simple terms and kept it short so it was very easy to digest. Well done! I will say, in the playthrough I watched, everything happened the same way but Crisanta didn’t show up in the end. I’m assuming I saw a different ending. Probably the better one considering that her actions bring the sacrifice of the Penitent One to naught. 😊
You may have seen the “Wounds of Eventide” which is a third ending that was added in some free DLC for the game after it came out. I have a video on that whole story arc if you’re interested, but basically, the Penitent One finds out who the Miracle really is and defeats them. Its ending also sets up the story for the sequel. Thanks for watching! Happy you enjoyed!
I allways thought that the brambles on Mea Culpa were growing in both directions. Both extending on the hilt, and back over the handle, digging into the Penitent one's arm. Or worse yet; burrowing through his palm via the thorn.
Hey Squatch, will you do more videos about Blasphemous? I wasn't aware of this game's existence before, but I really like the themes and the philosophy behind it. And I bet there's even more to discover here. It was an awesome video, keep it up! :)

Ending1 has the loop until you get ending2 (but consider the Penitent One won't be the same person so try to get ending2 in the first run xD)
It’s not necessarily a time loop, but Crisandra’s actions are implied to bring back the Miracle, which would eventually attract more people to the Cradle of Affliction in the eventual outcome of finding someone to be the true Penitent One and become the next Son of the Miracle.
If yes, then I'm imagining modern miliitary, even if magic was hundreds of years ago
I love the surreal and tragic style of this game. It’s very haunting
Man, the lore is so dark and twisted, it's interesting af
Last time I was this early the crusades were still a thing
Love ur vids man :)
Haha. This made me laugh out loud!
Thanks for watching, man! Hope you enjoyed! :)
Finally got the platinum trophy.. I learned tons of lore on each playthrough.. what An awesome game
So he became "Jesus" just like our Jesus in our world.
He died for our sins... yeah he is kinda Jesus
@@kevincastillomorales4858 and then Casanta took his sword because she was butthurt.
Yes AND no, he's the second coming of Jesus. They already had a Jesus figure before the Penitent One, he's called The Twisted One and he's the guy doing the 8 figure pose on the wooden pole you see in the background during the first level.
The Hoboman of the trashcan not before performing gruesome fatalities on thousands of worshippers first
I'd still worship him
Wait, Is shovel Knight joke canon In blasphemous? Cause that would technically mean That God of war and blasphemous can take place in the same universe, just not realm I assume.
A God of war and Blasphemous crossover sounds amazing now that I think about it.
It's an easter Egg room, you have to go out of your way to find the secret. It's probably just a shoutout to a fellow indie game.
I just beat the game for the first time today. Such a awesome game! Thank you for the video. Very helpful to better understand the overall story.
I when bought the game no one had any good lore videos. I'm happy I saw this.
SmoughTown has a few on his channel! I recommend giving them a watch if you want to know more!
Thanks for watching!
10 hours into the game and I have no idea what's going on. Thanks for this vid, you just got a new subscriber!
I love this game a whole lot, but a bug that happened to me really deflated my will to finish it myself. So thank you for collecting the lore so I could understand the points I was missing.
That helmet's the same as the 1 bumping on ladders
Thank you God. To make me hear this narrator voice again
Lol. Hope you enjoyed the video! Thanks so much for watching!
They may take a while, but there will be more videos to come, so there will be more voice! :)
:]
Best video by far covering the story. No fillers, no opinions. True to the title and content. I wish I could like this a million times.
Thanks so much! That's exactly what I aimed for when making this (and all my videos), so happy to hear you enjoyed that! :)
Thanks for watching!
'And thus shall your name be erased under the heavens...you big old bed-wetting doodie-head!'
I'm so glad they changed Crisanta's voice.
14:00 I love how there is all this deep lore then BOOM pic of shovel knight
In confusing justice with torture the people and church have taken for holy something clearly hellish..
Loved your hotline miami lore video(s) , I couldn't find blasphemous story explanation at first the last time I checked. Glad you are back :)
Thanks a lot, man! I didn’t do a deep dive into this game cause Smough Town has quite a few, but I’ll probably make a few when the DLC eventually comes out!
I love these videos, i would love to hear u narrate the game "detention" i never understood the lore of that game :)
Thank you very much! I'm not sure what game I'll be doing next, but I'll look into Detention to see if it's interesting!
Thanks for the recommendation! And Thanks for watching!
I knew when I saw all the catholic symbolism that there was more to the story than I thought wished more story's would utilize such things in such a way
Haven't played this yet but I'm really intrigued by the lore so thanks for taking out the side missions so that I have at least a reason to play it for the side quests.
you've been spoiled.. kuddos to you for that hahah
Great breakdown of the lore. I understood the gist of it once I finished it, regarding the true guilt saving you from being swallowed up, but I didn't understand that the mindless mobs were the original followers, swallowed up by the ash.
Thanks a lot for this.
So instead of gold, pain and suffering is the currency that everyone craved in Custodia...
Depressed town lol
Just like new york
I am going through the game right now, but had no idea what I was doing! Thank you so much! That's a great video right there!
Really good explanation of this game's story! You should make more videos like these!
I just realized the Penitent One is literally Jesus
You mean figuratively.
No
Yes, a very violent Jesus
Mmmm I think the Twisted One would be the Jesus of that world
Hell yeah, now I feel like I can play the second game
I didn't understand what was going on at first but it started making more sense the second play through. I love the way they talk in the game and the story is interesting and like no other. Really cool concept to compliment a fun and gorgeous game. You're explanation makes sense but I'm going to dig into it more.
Well, Idk how I ended up here, but now I know what I'm diving into this coming weekend! Thanks dude!
...and I agree with your final thoughts about the story being hard to follow.
Beautiful story telling and sources. Best blasphemous lore video out of all that i watched.
Your type of storytelling is suitable for classic fallouts. I bet you could make a few videos about them.
A few people have said that about those games! I'll have to try them out at some point! :)
Thanks for watching!
Clicked as soon as I saw the notification. So happy you covered this game!
Awesome to hear! Hope you enjoy! Thanks for watching! :)
I don't play a lot of video games anymore but a good friend of mine recommended this, so I bought it and played through. Pretty good.
Fire Emblem is actually one of my favorite series of all time!
So do you plan to do a story telling video on FE awakening in the near future and hey if your taking recommendation , try out oxenfree
Unfortunately not! I don't have the means to capture the footage for that. Lol.
Oxenfree has been suggested a few times! I'll have to finally check it out here soon!
Esdras' running animation is so cute and derpy.
Its....almost like a twisted form of Jesus. He bears everyone's sins to save the world. Cool i guess. Kinda edgy but cool!
Says to the game that's literally edgy
@@fisgust When did moral and self-sacrifice become edgy I wonder?

That’s hands down the best explanation of the game and it’s lore. Good job!
watching this has got me even more hyped up for the upcoming dlc
Can't wait for the second one.
what a bad ass story. Never played the game but I've always been curious about it and this just made me wanna jump in
A few of the people in the world: Please give us pain
The Miracle: PAIN FOR EVERYONE. ALWAYS!
I just beat this game and loved it. But I had no idea what was happening. Thanks for the summary!
If there was a God that answered prayers on the regular, this is the universe it would create.
I am glad I finished the game before watching this. I adore this game and this made things more clear.
Maybe you could do a vid on Cry of fear, there aren't that many vids explaining the story or just talking about it
I'll have to check it out eventually and see if it interests me! I'm not a fan of scary games though, so I'm not sure it'll happen...
Thanks for the recommendation! And Thanks for watching! :)
Ok, after the hotline Miami series and this one, blasphemous! You've earned a sub my guy.
So, a being exists that does nothing but give people pain and suffering. And everyone just decides "Yeah, this seems like the good guy."?
Yeah, I guess that’s a pretty good way of breaking it down. Lol. I would say they believe that by humbling themselves before it, it will spare them from its wrath, but then that gets warped and people start believing that the pain and suffering actually indicates you’re in the favor of the entity.
Thanks for watching!
I never realize how fresh it is to experience a story based on cristian mythology, that it’s not just the usual “angels vs demons” conflict
Amazing video and explanation. Loved listening to your voice as it told this perilous story
Haven't played this game by the vibes and art, everything is so great about this game!
I was hoping for Ending 3. The Penitent One decides "screw this noise" and teleports out with a certain Shard-bearer.
Best metroidvania/2d Souls-like over the past few years.
Ahhhh I loved the aesthetic of this and the lore was so good, I started learning about Spaniard Catholicism for fun LOL

Wow. An ending hidden behind side quests. Niiice. Not to mention this lore is fucking wicked
Just finished Lisa, and came here (channel) to finish all the holes in my knowledge; you're a saint and your videos bring me joy :)
I allways thought that the brambles on Mea Culpa were growing in both directions. Both extending on the hilt, and back over the handle, digging into the Penitent one's arm. Or worse yet; burrowing through his palm via the thorn.
I'm sad I took so goddamn long to get here after Squatch recommended it to me. I just wish there was more in this series!
Klergy: Miracle! Do something!
Miracle: Hmmm...yes, tree.
Hey Squatch, will you do more videos about Blasphemous? I wasn't aware of this game's existence before, but I really like the themes and the philosophy behind it. And I bet there's even more to discover here. It was an awesome video, keep it up! :)
Oh, there is a ton of information behind the game! Another token of inspiration it takes from the Souls-Borne games. Lol. I was thinking of doing a few covering the stories of the bosses and maybe some of the side characters, but I'm not totally sure yet. We'll see!
Thanks for watching, man! :)
Thanks, this was really helpful! Me and my GF finished the game last night and had no idea what had happened :-) It is actually a pretty cool story, I wish the devs had made it a little less obscure and shrouded in waffley language during the game.
Guy: *kills himself for the safety of Custodia*
Crisanta: I'm about to end this man's whole career ..
Excellent video with compelling oration, well done.
Does the game drop any hint as to why the Penitent One takes off his helmet and fills it with blood? What's the symbolism there?
This game is a masterpiece!
One of the best metroidvanias I've ever played
Cannot explain how much I loved this game, it just got me
