Quand Bartok prend un tempo, il le garde... Et Presto c'est Presto !! Quelle leçon pour les pianistes et les musiciens When Bartok takes a tempo, it keeps ... And Presto is Presto !! What a lesson for pianists and musicians
he played his own concertos himself...you know that his own piano concertos are all devilishly difficult, those piece should have come to him as " very easy"... becoz if somebody plays the "bartok piano concertos"- he may play the scarlattis- "in sleep" ;;;))
The relationship of smaller shapes and phrasing to the different scales of the architecture of each piece are astonishing! And the virtuoso gusto and joy and freshness that surf on top of his formal intelligence. Like a Pollini and Cortot four-handed recital. I have not been so shocked and re-rooted in what is revealed about Scarlatti since Mikhail Pletnev. Thank you, universe!
The speeds are generally fast, removing some aspects of grace&elegance but in recompense we get amazing energy, some explosive surprises and forceful logic, all in superb playing. Really fascinating;one great composer/pianist's take on another.
How utterly fascinating!!! What marvelous technique...and if there are better versions of these, none right now have so interested me as these short bits played by a great composer.
@Kaikhosru Shapurji Sorabji Yes, he took second prize in a major piano competition, and was angry at not getting the gold, which went to a kid named Backhaus.
These performances are pianistically equal to the greatest Scarlattians-- Horowitz, Michelangeli, Tipo--combined with an almost Landowska-like passion for revivifying and animating early music. The sheer velocity is dizzying.
why do pianists play these so fast. a harpsichordist once corrected my tempo for k.141.musically they certainly work .this man def knew what was happening in this music . why not these super tempos. there is no hungaraian dance element in his playing.where do these comments come from. i would def like to read his letters.
unbelievable pianist he was, too
One of the speedier versions of K 427 I've heard on YT . . . but not without its charm. He certainly knew his way around a piano.

What a treat to hear an acoustically efficient piano, one that doesn't obstruct the ear-to-hand connection!
As my sainted( fainted ) old man would have said: " That'd be too much like right!"
Only someone POSSESSING an ear would have made this specific point! It's indeed a joy.

Glorious! What a rare find and treat!
HIs performances and his music are incredible.
Lord! Just astounding playing! Humbling.
his playing is so pretty, and soft, and fun!
作曲家で有名なバルトークですが、ピアノの腕前も一流です。
Splendid interpretations full of fantasy from a man who was so rigorous in his own music!
Incredible playing....
Fascinating.
Being a composer he mastered the piano in a level many exclusive pianists would like to have...
Splendide.
Wow! Amazing! Thank you for posting!
That is a piano player, all right... Just M A R V E L O U S!!!!!
I did not know that he was a distinguished pianist, too! Thanks!

Boy. I was sure not cut out to appreciate Scarlatti.
Wow this is amazing, cool, amazingly cool.
I don;t think ,Bartok as been fully appreciated as the pianist that he was.
Блестящий пианист!
Transl: Brilliant pianist!
He makes it sound like one of his compositions, it's like listening to Microcosmos :D lol
You say that like it's a bad thing. ;) (FWIW, I thought the same thing!)
Yes! It sounds like Bartok playing Scarlatti, as opposed to Scarlatti played by Bartok
No, not on the first sonata, I've performed it a lot and it really does sound like this because it's marked "to be played as fast as is possible".
Great post! thanks
Great!
Super!
@carmenaballi Here is film Bartók playing (in colour, and with sound):

Hurry up children, it's time to go to school !
This reminds me an awful lot of Horowitz's playing.
Tempi pianists wouldn't dare today.
if you have EQ on your audio amp,,knock down the hiss, boost a bit in the midrange, add a smidgen pf reverb
La K 70 está demasiado rápida... :/

sounds like Glenn Gould

TO FAST !
Astonishing pianism, but the tempi are way to fast; this robs the music of its inherent nobility.
The first one is marked as fast as possible. So there's no too fast!
