      I have a milksnake, I would characterize him as, pretty looking, zippy garden hose. He's a mixed bag for handling, he never bites or musks, but generally just zips out of your hands as fast as he can.

      @@user-cp1np1ob4d Its honestly rare to find a ball python thats willing to bite. Thats really unlucky, but it should be very easy to fix. Lookup "Tap training". It will work, trust me. Never seen it fail with ball pythons. Ive been keeping ball pythons since i was 3 years old and im in my 30s. Nowdays my ball python is my smallest snake believe it or not lol. Im not even into small snakes, but ill probably always have at least one ball python until the day i die. They are my "go to snake" for handing to people who have never handled a snake before, and want to try with something easy. Ball pythons are generally about as calm as a snake can be. Their "chill vibes" and cute derpy faces make them ideal for people who are afraid of snakes. idk how anyone could look into a ball pythons goofy eyes and be intimidated lol.

    As a person with mental health conditions that cause anxiety and panic attacks, my ball python helps by redirecting attention and directing pressure because she is stronger than a corn snake. I’m not saying corn snakes are not a great pet. They are fantastic pets I’m just saying this is my reason for picking a ball python.

    • @alexcrowder1673
      @alexcrowder1673 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      I can relate. I love feeling them squeeze a little bit. Something about the pressure is calming. Not the "i'm scared im going to fall" sort of squeeze, but just feeling their strength. My african rock python basically massages my neck (just the back of it) and my shoulders sometimes. It is incredibly relaxing and calming most of the time. Shes a sweetheart too. She doesnt even strike her food, let alone people. Whenever I feed her, she just calmly opens her mouth and eats her frozen thawed rabbits off the ground without striking at them at all. She doesnt even coil them until shes halfway done eating it. She never ever skips a meal..... unless that meal is not a rabbit lol. She does not eat rats. She used too, but apparently shes too good for them now lol. Either that or they are so small to her she doesn't even see them as food anymore. Not a species id reccomend to everyone, but they can be perfect for someone looking for a larger snake. I prefer my african rock python over any of my burmese or reticulated pythons. They are all wonderful though! I just think african rock pythons have the most personality out of all the giant snakes.

      This is one of the reasons I love snakes so much. Aside from the fact that they physically feel so cool to hold, like that wonderful tactile sensation of their muscle-y noodle-ness, I also feel like that would be incredibly helpful for my mental health, like you mentioned, with that attention diversion.
      And they're beautiful.

    • @alexcrowder1673
      @alexcrowder1673 3 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@coalblooded Handling snakes is super different from species to species. Id handle a few species at a shop to get a feel for what you are looking for, and what you can provide for. Then id narrow is down from there. Some snakes, like ball pythons, are snakes you can easily handle while doing other activities. Something like a Corn snake however, IS the activity. If you try to sit on a couch watching tv, with a cornsnake you are likely to lose it. A ball python is a lot less likely to do that, but still might lol. Also, dont be afraid to look at snakes that people consider "Intermediate". As long as you do enough research it doesnt matter. Never get a snake as a "stepping stone" to what you really want. Just do the proper research and get what you actually want instead. Unless its listed as "Expert only", youll be fine with enough research. Getting a snake as a "stepping stone" is almost a guaranteed way to get bored of your pet. I saw it all the time working at arizona reptile center.

    Ball Python, personally. Mine has his own personality and they can even be trained to only have a feeding response when you tap on the enclosure with the tongs. He transitioned from mice to rats effortlessly. I only had one instance where he went off food, but it was related to him developing minor scale rot and the stress of the treatment caused him to not care for eating. He went off food for 5 months till he completely healed, but didn't loose any weight in that time period. I've had him for three years and he's one of the best things that ever happened to me. Absolute goofball.

      I've been told that Corn snakes can get a lot bigger than you expect, I think these days with better care they will get just as long as a Ball, just not as thicc. That's why I like my milksnake, he has great patterning, and 3.5ft is as big as he will ever get, about 60% the length of a big Corn snake or Ball.

    Whatever your looking for in a snakes personality is what matters. If you’re looking for a more entertaining and lively snake go for a corn snake but if you want a snake who will just chill with you then get a ball python.

    • @alexcrowder1673
      @alexcrowder1673 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Very true. It applies to bigger snakes too. Burmese pythons are BASICALLY just giant ball pythons that never go off food. They are great for relaxing on the couch and watching TV. Reticulated pythons on the other hand move around a whole lot more and are more interactive, more similar to a cornsnake. Handling them is more of an activity in itself rather than something you would do while doing something else. Obviously big snakes are impractical for most people though. For most people I highly reccomend Carpet pythons! Particularly the smaller localities of them. They have an INCREDIBLY cool looking face and head shape compared to most other nonvenomous snakes out there. They are very smart and active snakes who are not difficult to handle and are extremely hardy. Some localities dont need very much added heat, and do not even have any special humidity requirements! For whatever reason they never gained much popularity in the united states, but they are one of the top reccomended beginner snakes in Australia.

They’re much better feeders than ball pythons and more reasonable temp and humidity requirements. Between those two, a Corn snake, less likely to go on hunger strike. But a Corn snake may need just as big an enclosure, they can get just as long as a Ball. I personally chose option #3, a Pueblan Milksnake, pretty patterning, great eaters just like Corn snakes, stays small enough to live happily in a 40, a Ball or a Corn may need a 120 if they get to the bigger end of their size range.

    I find corns a bit wriggly and flighty; when we're talking about which makes a better PET, that, to me, is very important. I like to hang out with my animals, not wrangle them.

    When keepers say ball pythons go off food USUALLY its because they don’t want to offer it live rats. Some situations are different though of course.

    I've wanted a corn snake my entire life but then when it was time to choose I picked a pine snake and never regretted it, and then a ball python because I felt in love with one that is super active and has an insane good response. Corn snakes are cute but now I find them a little bit boring

    I wanted to have a snake for a really long time so I asked many people what kind of snake I should get and everyone said corn snake or ball phyton. It was a really hard decision cuz they are both so cute 😭 but I got a corn snake instead :) they are really friendly and caring

    Ive got a 4 month old ball python and hes the sweetest thing ever, hes actually been pretty good with feeding, sometimes he gets a bit funny with food when hes in the middle of a shed but other than that, i would say ball pythons are awsome

    I’d LOVE to have a Ball python!! It seems to be the most docile and calmest of any snake for a pet! Corn snakes are good too! I also hear red tailed boas are very good as pets as well

    I love corn snakes but I'm a big constrictor kind of gal. Though I would actually go with a dwarf retic since they don't go off food and have similar size to ball pythons

    According to a lot of people who keep balls correctly... emphasis on correctly, going off feed is entirely due to breeding or shitty husbandry

    • @alexcrowder1673
      @alexcrowder1673 หลายเดือนก่อน

      A good thory, but even if that were true... It would still not explain why this behavior is SO much more prevalent in ball pythons than ALL other python species. Or why they still breed so readily. IMO ball pythons simply have a very mild prey drive and thats all it is. Males also go off food for breeding season like you said though. Infact i know male BP's who go off food for 8+ months EVERY year. Its also worth mentioning that ball pythons have a tendancy to prefer mice to rats ( thought to be due to them smelling more like their natural prey). So sometimes they will take a mouse but refuse a rat.

    Team it depends. Corn snakes are fast and I've seen people get them for kids that are still scared of that, then they never get handled.. Otherwise corn snakes do seem to eat better, and you are going to see them being way more active.
