  • Recently, more than 130 veterans who fought in the Falklands conflict returned to the islands 40 years on to meet the people they liberated.
One of the veterans to return was Rob Stenhouse who was just 17 when he was deployed to defend the overseas territory.
Forces News joined Rob as he toured the battlefields he fought on in 1982.

A good number of 17 year olds, fought in the Falklands. Neil Grose, Ian Scrivens and Jason Burt of 3 Para, all gave their lives on Mt Longdon. Indeed, Neil had his 18th birthday on 11 June 82 and died the day after.

Now I’m nearing old age i think going back will put a lot of sad, some bad memories too rest. Sailed on my 18th birthday with 42 Commando RM on the Canberra. Still wouldn’t change a thing if given the chance and do it all over again.

I was 10 in 82. I wanted to join since the age of 6. So living in Southampton I got to see the ships leave and return. My step dad loaded the ships in Southampton Docks. Then he had a shift on Canberra the day after her return. We all either watched then from Weston Shore as they sailed up Southampton Water, or on the Itchen Bridge. I remember being off school the next day, and I begged my dad to take me to work with him. I wanted to see the Miltary on Canberra. My dad and I were about to walk inside the ships working gangway. When a Wo2 Bootneck said to my dad. I wasn't allowed on board, but he snuck me into the pig (crew bar on Canberra). I got treated to sweets. Coca cola, and watched TV all day til my dad finished. But met loads of RM lads. I told them I wanted to join the Army. Esp the base opposite Southampton Docks. The Wo2 said to me that was A Royal Corps of Transport Military Port. The Army had vessels there. So there were Army Soldier Sailors as Marine engineers or Deckhand/Navigation. Plus Army Stevedores that did same job as my step dad. My eyes lit right up. So from then on I knew that's where I wanted to go.
I served 3 different times in the British Army. 1st time in 1988 as Jnr ldr Royal Artillery aged 16 (Couldn't get in RCT as intakes full, my grandad was RA 1932 to 1946 so it was 2nd choice). So planned for 29 Cmndo after Juniors. Unfortunately I ruptured Achilles tendon 5 months in. So either backsquad or rejoin at 17.5yrs at adult (Regulars) entry. 2nd time 1989 to 93 I served in RCT Maritime on Army Landing Craft,Mexeflote Rafts, LCVP'S, Small Fast Patrol Boats, Tugs and Dutch Barges, Ribs and Geminis etc. I trained as RCT Mariner in Deckhand/Nav trade. So finally got my dream. Served 3 great yrs. Only left as had chance to work either my step dad in Southampton Container Berth. Otherwise I'd have stayed full colour service 22yrs. Maybe like some mates do extended til 55. 3rd time I was working in Aircraft Industry and split with ex in 01. Trained hard from 16 stone to 12st 10lb, from Dec 01 to Jan03. I joined 63 SAS Signals Sqn T.A. Unfortunately I broke my back doing a charity parachute jump on a weekend off from SAS Signals pre Selection course in March 03. Went on June 03 Selection with an unaware broken back at the time. Miracle I made it as far as I did. All part of my 29yr ongoing - multiple, degenerative, physical and mental, chronic and acute health battles.
I'll never forget meeting those RM guys on Canberra. Esp the kind Sgt Major. I'm so proud to have also served alongside many Falklands vets. Not just as instructors, mentors, but also as friends to this day. I learnt so much from them. You just never messed with a Falklands veterans.

@@Michael-4 oh wow were abouts on the route did you see her. I've lost count how many times I've sailed Southampton Water into the Solent. Either via North Channel or Cowes Roads. Many on the Red Funnel. A fair few mates from my RCT Maritime days have or still work on the ferries after leaving the Regt. Mostly Marine Engineers. My trade was Deck/Nav, most of my trade went to Red Funnel Tugs etc. So along with many trips to IOW on days out or few days stop over etc. We also sailed out of our 17 Port & Maritime Regt Base at Marchwood in various Landing Craft and Mexeflote rafts etc. When huge ships pass. They just look like behemoths of floating steel. They'd cut us in two and not notice it. Michael were you still on ferry for part of her return or only ftom Red Funnel terminal. I liked walking via chain ferry, to the pub in the precinct that looked out onto the Solent. Some nice viewing of big ships there. Growing up as an Itchen/Woolston lad by the River Itchen. I lived sitting on the weston jetty and just see the ships come and go as a young teen.

The sad thing about this saga is that everyone knows how much oil and resources are around the Falklands yet countries like Kuwait Bahrain Qatar reap their rewards whilst the good folk of the Falklands remain scratching for a living but successive British Governments have failed to capitalize or invest in them and many Veterans are left to rot on the streets.
The Veterans of the Falklands campaign got an extra few pounds per day during the conflict, then a medal and concessionary £1500 flights to the South Atlantic to spend a few days where many of their mates never returned.

The island is inhabited by British, the people are English, the language is English, the laws and culture is British. There is no semblance of Argentinian or Latin American culture on the Falkland Islands. The people of the Falklands want to be British. The Falklands has been British longer than Argentina has existed as a country.
      Do you understand now?

@@tdoran616 Imagine Brazil claiming the rights of Guernsey because they came to the island 400 years ago. Kaliningrad is somewhat close to Russia, but Falkland Island is FAR away from the UK. Whatever, its belong to you, the all mighty white europeans wins again

@@rasmusmortensen4756 people have always lived on Guernsey, The Falklands was inhabited by setters until the British settled there. Your comparison is a strawman. The Falklands has literally always been British, the people, language, culture, architecture and laws are all English. There isn’t any semblance of Latin American or Argentinian culture on the Falklands. Argentina started a war of aggression, lost and still cry about it to this day.
Low IQ third Worlders who think geographical proximity is enough for a foreign power to steal land from another country need educated on the history of the Falklands.

If the Brits would have lost it would be Argentinians giving their veterans a tour now. And this girl would've probably grown up in England. Either way climate and other catastrophies will kill us all in the years to come. Human suffering won't be around forever, but those alive now have got a very bad deal indeed. Glad to be smart enough not to have bred any descendants ;-).

The Falklands War is arguably the most just for the British fought in since WW2. Defending your people from an aggressive foreign invader is very just.

that makes no sense. It would mean that making war against those that make war is unjust. Yet those making war in the first place are unjust.

I’m sure only Nazis would constantly and consistently obsess over war. You have to meet historians to find people that know about their nations wars. In uk you only need to know how to listen.
