  • Third in the series of videos showing how to convert the Bruder MB Sprinter using hobby-grade RC. In this video I use the steering components from red Jeep that comes with the Sprinter to fabricate functional and proportional RC steering - with suspension - using the original wheels and tyres from the Sprinter. The process to do this was quite involved and took a few hours to do, but I am really happy with result and on the plus side it was very inexpensive to do and I managed to preserve the original look of the model. It is worth noting that I changed the gear ratio in the Tamiya twin gearbox as it runs better this was - this is covered towards the end of the video. The video is deliberately very detailed to allow others to follow what I have done.
My intention in the videos in this series is that the conversion to the truck will be using commonly available, inexpensive components and methods which are available to and achievable by most people.
I am very happy to receive comments and suggestions & hear about your ideas in the comments section.

Thanks for sharing another great video Pete.
I enjoyed watching your practical engineering solution to the steering dilemma.
As soon as I can get around a bit better we'll have to have a catch up.
I can't wait for the next series of videos.
    Very well done mate.

Thanks Ian, I was determined to make it work and was pleasantly surprised how well it actually drives. The kids really enjoy using it - as it is slow and controllable enough for them to use in the house, with enough torque to carry stuff. I've just got to mechanise the ramps and find a home for the electronics & this one will be done. I think that the articulated (semi) lorry with the long bed trailer comes next & I've got some ideas for that already.

Well...I was very impressed by the neat manner in which you suspended the Tamiya gearbox in the last episode of this intriguing build, but this video takes the biscuit.
I love the resourceful way you´ve repurposed the steering knuckles and - er - the red bits from the Willys to create a beautifully tucked-away steering and suspension system. I love it so much I´ve subscribed on the strength of it. I have no idea how you´ll get the ramps to extend and retract but I can´t wait to see!

Thank you. I am trying to work these things out as I go along & not simply copy videos made by other people (although I sometimes have a look to get ideas or see how to get the models apart - if anyone has ever attempted the models I am adapting). The big challenge here was not to raid either my hobby grade RC models or the spares box, but to make something largely out of what can in the box with the recovery truck. i hope you still enjoy the ramps video - I did take an easier route, but might return to this one I have developed a few more techniques. Thank you for your comment and subscription. I have subscribed to you also - as it looks like you have some interesting stuff on there!👍

Thank you very much for subscribing; like you, I enjoy converting toys or toy-grade RC vehicles.
Having discovered your channel I´ll be working my way happily through your past builds for the foreseeable future...

😂😂😂 You are welcome! It's a good method, took me a few destroyed wheels before I figured this method out. 👍🙂

@@RCModders well as i proceed with my conversion, it really is a no instructions, figure it out yourself trial and error process. Alot of staring at it before i cut etc, but mine is involving a team associated cr12 ford truck, my axial 69 blazer transmitter and receiver, and my trusty and awesome Canadian tire dremel. The width of the axial with tires on is 178mm. i think the bruder truck is about 185 mm, so approx 3.5mm difference each side. So far is coming along nicely.

Sounds really excellent: the super scale detail of a Bruder body together with the capability of hobby-grade 4x4 axles & transmission should make for an awesome combination. Feel free to post a link to pictures / videos of the outcome in the comments. Small differences in wheel base or track can usually be got around if you need to (eg wider hexes - if its just a mm or two - very flat washers can be ok - I've used plastic ones before to do this), although Bruder tend to be a little too wide on the, so this may be perfect anyway. Letting your imagination flow & creating something truly unique is great fun! 🙂👍

creative mind bud nice work again 8-) What you need is a 3d printer then you can fabricate and design your own parts to fit right in at the touch of a button.. It does take a few retro peices to get the exact fit you wnat but after that every one you build you can print out the same pieces 8-)

Any small brushed ESC - with reverse - would be fine.

The gearbox is plenty strong enough for a small model like this.

For the time being I am focusing on the Bruder conversions which are keeping me quite busy. I think that the techniques for these conversions are going to be fairly similar. The sort of things I would think about are 1. has it already got steering? that helps a lot. How will you control the steering? 2. are the tyres any good (not too hard)? will you have to change the wheels, if so what size? have you got some, can you get them? how will they attach? 3 axle size: have you got a transmission for that? 4. wheelbase / track (width). can the body be put on a different chassis? 5. is there room for the electronics? These are the sort sort of things I think about before starting a project. You get better at mods by just trying & having a go. Building stock RCs and watching videos will teach you a lot and give you ideas. inexpensive toys are not a big risk if they go wrong. Good luck! 🙂

    No suspension

The second version of this has full all round suspension. Leaf and springs at the back and springs on the front. And 3D printed parts. The second one used uses the DHL van body. You can see it briefly in my latest (Nov 2021) video. 😁👍
