@@djdox2425 I can not agry with you about Novi Sad. Novi Sad is one of the best looking serbian cities. It is question of individual afinities, which city is better for someone. Fact is, southern and eastern part of Serbia, including Banat region, is visited mutch less then northern part and some places in western Serbia like Zlatibor and Kopaonik. For example, i know just one man who visited Kragujevac, Kragujevac is historicaly and cultural very important city for Serbia. Also Valjevo, very very important place with it neigborough. Kikinda, Leskovac, Vranje, Negotin,... Bunch of historical palces and location sorounds these cities.

@@kingquinn3897dunno, it's cheap even for Serbia. Two pieces (perfect for one person) is less than a euro. For comparison a slice of pizza would be around 1,50. There aren't a lot of Serbs in the UK, but you can look for a Turskih or Greek restaurant, they should offer burek
Guys, my wife was born and bred in Niš, and we’re loving your travels through Serbia. One place you should try is ‘Kod Rajka’ which translates as ‘ At Rajka’s’. The place is very well known for its grilled meat…especially recommend the cevapi and rebarca (ribs) in kajmak!!! Its across from where you had your beers on your first day. Before the pandemic, Anton's bakery started operating at 3 o'clock at night. There is no better burek in the world than with Anton at 3 am when we return from the city, and there were some good afterparties ...

Hi Matt & Molly, I really enjoy your Serbia videos. I literally searched on YT for 'Belgrade, Serbia' a few weeks ago after I friend who I recently caught up with really enjoyed travelling in the country and recommended it to me. Since I found your Serbia video I really enjoy watching them and have watched all your Serbia videos so far. It is a really interesting country with a lot of history and so far is kind of an undiscovered country in terms of international tourism. I plan now on visiting Serbia myself probably in September. I plan on staying in Belgrade first but will visit Novi Sad and if I have time probably Nis as well. If I manage to get to Nis I will definitely have a Burek in Antons place.
It is much more convenient to visit Subotica and Sombor after Novi Sad - two very beautiful and much smaller towns - than Nish. And, it depends what you are going after - if it is architecture and atmosphere, Novi Sad, Subotiza and Sombor are much better choice. Food is generally good all over Serbia. Burek is found in every pekara all over Serbia - flaky, crusty, greasy, with cheese, meat, spinach, fruit ...
I just binge watched all of your Serbia travel videos and you two make such amazing travel content! From the history to the food and everything, major props :) I'm Canadian with Serbian parents and even though I go back to visit quite often, I tend to just stay and see family in the east, so it's really cool to see you go all over and explore what different parts have to offer! Trust me, Leskovac has the best bbq in my opinion in all Balkans. All over the Balkans in any country you can see signs “Leskovacki rostilj” which means “Leskovac’s bbq”.. The main squares in both Niš and Leskovac are under reconstruction so the southern cities may seem a bit messy now cause there is a lot of construction going on 😄👍🏻
There is no official "The best" burek in Nis... there are sooo many different pekara's in Nis, and also it depends on when you buy it (it is the best early in the morning). I would say that "Rayko" has the best burek in Nis, and "Chicha i Nele" is also really good.
Great review guys! 😊 The cheese's taste is distinctive, that's why I like it, it's homemade in the village (authentic) vs. the factory-made mainstream cheese that other bakeries use.
You've got the burek right, but i'm thinking you're missing out on Serbia's craft beer scene completely, in Niš you had like two places with good beer selection. Also not visiting kafana while in Serbia is like you haven't really been here :D
(Wheat) 'Palachinke' are actually type of 'Crêpes Suzette' (in the US, adapted from French) but I'm not sure how they are called in England - maybe English don't like French adaptation. In the US 'Pancakes' are thick and made from 'Buckwheat' if made properly. Also I believe that 'yogurt' everyone consumes with Burek there is actually Buttermilk and not yogurt at all but I left Yugo long ago and could be wrong. Yogurt is 'thick' while Buttermilk is more 'liquidly'.
When you eat burek dont forget a yogurt. Burek is greasy and yogurt dilutes it. And its cowith each other, that's the kind of culture here. We never separate from each other.
It's so cool you got into burek. If you're gonna be in Belgrade again I can recommend you a place that does it in different style that has a mythical status within the neighbourhood where its at, and wider. Also if you need some other recommendations about what to see etc. I'd love to give my two cents.

And Nis is not only famous for borek we are the best of the best for the BBQ meat and meat in general. You need to go to kafana there and to try the best cevapi, lamb in milk, gurman's burger and pljeskavica with kajmak! Nislijska Mehana! We are much much better than Leskovac!
You may not like yogurt, but there is a better dairy there "kiselo mleko" and "pavlaka" . You can dip things in it, while pavlaka can be spread. Also have you tried Serbian 'proja' the best cornbread in the world? I think proja is better than burek, you can eat it all day alone or with anything and it does not need to be warm so easy to carry around.

I see you like your bureks! You should try the best burek with kolenica in Pancevo, city just 13kms from Belgrade. It can be a nice 1-day trip from Belgrade, couple of cozy places to visit, little bit of history, architecture, parks and couple of great food places and if you visit on Sunday, you could visit buvljak, big, open flee market.
By the look of it, seems very good. Spinach most often goes with cheese in pastry. Actually, what you bought was very cheap even for Serbia. They probably sell it there by weight, not by piece.
Next time you visit the Balkans, I suggest you to try Pizza Burek, It's not traditional, but more modern version of Burek like when Burek and Pizza meet and meld together hehe :)
Feta cheese is called Beli Sir in Serbian. Beli = white, Sir = cheese cognate to the word sour because that's how cheese is made-it is fermented. The word Beli is cognate to the English word pale.
I understand you have moved on to Bulgaria but it is a shame you didn't have the time to check out the food scene in Niš. The tradition of slow food is still very strong there and the food scene is so much more diverse apart from burek and grilled meat. It's really world class in my opinion.

Gibanica is the true Serbian traditional food. My mom made this egg and cheese pie for every occasion. We ate pita and not burek. :)

They can try mantije in Nish. Micko - bakery close train station have very good (like in Novi Pazar).

You may not like yogurt, but there is a better dairy there "kiselo mleko" and "pavlaka" . You can dip things in it, while pavlaka can be spread. Also have you tried Serbian 'proja' the best cornbread in the world? I think proja is better than burek, you can eat it all day alone or with anything and it does not need to be warm so easy to carry around.

When in pekara ask for "empty" burek. The burek without filling. Not many pekaras do them any more, but I loved these since I was a kid.

I see you like your bureks! You should try the best burek with kolenica in Pancevo, city just 13kms from Belgrade. It can be a nice 1-day trip from Belgrade, couple of cozy places to visit, little bit of history, architecture, parks and couple of great food places and if you visit on Sunday, you could visit buvljak, big, open flee market.

Actually, what you bought was very cheap even for Serbia. They probably sell it there by weight, not by piece.
It's by piece. One quarter (two pieces, perfect for one) of cheese burek is 110 dinars.

Feta cheese is called Beli Sir in Serbian. Beli = white, Sir = cheese cognate to the word sour because that's how cheese is made-it is fermented. The word Beli is cognate to the English word pale.
This is not feta.Feta cheese is made from goat and sheep milk and this cheese in burek is from cow milk
In Serbian language most of the accents fall on the first syllable. :)

I understand you have moved on to Bulgaria but it is a shame you didn't have the time to check out the food scene in Niš. The tradition of slow food is still very strong there and the food scene is so much more diverse apart from burek and grilled meat. It's really world class in my opinion.
