I find it difficult to understand why many Indians like Pankaj Saran think India is a global power. It’s important to acknowledge the significant economic gap between China and India-in terms of GDP, GDP per capita, and overall socioeconomic development. This gap is as vast as the difference between the U.S. and Mexico. Despite this disparity, some continue to dream of India becoming a superpower, a goal that seems not noly overly ambitious but also impossible.
For example, the GDP per capita in all Indian states bordering Bangladesh are significantly lower than that of Bangladesh itself. In the 2023 Global Hunger Index, India ranks 111th out of the 125 countries, which means a level of hunger that is serious.Additionally, while India is now the most populous country in the world, it still lacks a permanent seat with veto power in the United Nations.
Moreover, after the fall of Sheikh Hasina's government in Bangladesh, India has found itself surrounded by anti-Indian governments in its neighboring countries. If India struggles to assert influence in its own region, how can it hope to project power on a global scale?
According to UNICEF, a significant portion of India's population still practices open defecation, contributing to environmental pollution and the spread of diseases. Despite its massive population, India's recent Olympic medal counts lack of gold medals, further reflecting its challenges in excelling on the global stage.
Lastly, India ranks highest in both legal and illegal immigration, highlighting the poor quality of life that compels many to seek better opportunities abroad.

Amb . Saran, you have been a high commissioner of India to Bangladesh for a number of years. Unfortunately , you never learned or wanted to learn about the Bengali culture-distinct from the West Bengal , social and political moorings. You always worked from the selfish India’s perspective and not what the Bangladeshis want. In this interview You have delivered a narrative which is full of falsehood, misleading and evading the truth.
In fact from 2009 to 05 august 2024, before Hasina fled to her sanctuary in India, it was literally India , which ran Bangladesh through its stooge Hasina. Though there is adequate skepticism , the 2008 election was generally accepted by the people as fare. But when it comes to the elections of 2014 , 2018 and 2024 , you may duck your head in the sand, but the truth is , if it was not India directly interfering or supporting Hasina nakedly, she would have never won those three elections.
The brutal and fascist rule that Hasina ran in the country, would have never happened if she wasn’t emboldened by her conviction that India would support her to the hilt. For instance , the late president Pranab Mukherjee once threatened to send indian troops to Bangladesh , in the event of any threat to Hasina’s life. Was it any of his business ? As high commissioner it was your duty to find out the core reasons for incremental rise of anti India sentiments. You should have also mentioned Hasina’s corrupt practices , laundering of money by herself , her family members and cronies and other crimes against humanity she committed. I remember your attitude towards this country, when i once asked you to pay some attention to the killings of the unarmed and innocent Bangladeshi citizens in the border areas by the BSF. And, you rudely brushed aside my concern, displaying your arrogance. If you are honest , please provide a list of what Bangladesh gained and what India gained out of the so-called “ golden relationship between India and Bangladesh”. No doubt it was diamond for India but for Bangladesh it got only empty promises. Hasina had once infamously declared that “what I have given to India it will never forget”. Let’s see your government make such a bold statement with facts and figures.
Mr. Saran , i will advise you to refrain from lecturing us. Bangladeshis are tremendously resilient people and we have throughout our history have successfully surmounted any adversities-manmade or natural.please leave us to our fate. Thanks for reading, if at all you will.

This happens everywhere in the world. This is exactly what Saran is pointing out. You need stronger institutions. Why didn't your opposition parties go out to the world and build loyalties. Politics is dirty. We are not spewing hatred online against the Americans because they met our opposition leaders. There is a certain level of decorum that states need to maintain between them. The amount of hatred I have seen from Bangladeshi society and the gov officials is insane. But Indian officials have only been quiet and mature and not indulging in this microphone diplomacy.

In 2014, all political parties boycotted the one-sided election, and your external affairs secretary herself visited BD and forced a particular party to join the polls, so that it seems participatory.
Since then, Hasina rigged every election, and her only enabler was India. Now, India has gone mad as its agent has been kicked out by the brave Bangladeshis..
We love India and its people. But please don't try to snatch our right to elect our leaders, and don't try to set your agent here again. Also, change your foreign policy, since it is the worst one a nation can have. With this policy, you are setting all neighbours in your confrontation..

His narrative is aligned with his training as a diplomat. Indian involvement started from 2014 onwards. Hasina had no other choice but to dance with the puppeteer, the criminal Hasina received immoral support from Modi even though they knew the last three elections she rigged like a pirate in the high seas. The high commissioner, I am sure, was not comfortable to shove her around by the directives of Delhi. The people of Bangladesh naturally did realize Hasina's compromising attitude towards "Big Brother" India. India heavily relied on RAW, a rotten organization. Like her father, Sk. Mujib, Hasina was involved in conspiracy herself against the people of Bangladesh. Fascist Hasina will remain in a foreign soil but unlike her father, she will not have a final resting place in Bangladesh. KARMA.

I can understand that the truth can be bitter but certainly it can't blind you from reality.
The fact is that you have nothing to counter whatever has been said by this gentleman.

From the comments it seems many in Bangladesh feel that India was asking BNP to not participate in elections. It would be interesting to see if BNP or AL or both decide not to participate in the next elections, will Bangladeshis still blame India for it? And if India engages with a BNP government post elections in which AL doesn't participate, will Bangladeshis be still be complaining? Will such a govt. Legitimate or illegitimate?

US - Yunus connection Vs India - Hasina connection is not same. India kept its eyes closed, if not supported the killings, abductions, illegal imprisonment of her political oppositios by Hasina. While there is no such example that US is encouraging Yunus to indulge in such activities. That's why we Bangladeshis blame India for all our miseries that we suffered during Hasina's rule.

India should cautiously choose their viewpoint. Because this time it is not ISI backed government in Bangladesh like in 2001. It is USA with Pentagon has significant influence on it! India can't afford to play a proxy war in Bangladesh with USA where a vulnerable porous border exist! India is not united even 90 years ago. US can break into pieces again if India try to stand equal with USA!

A good overview of post Hasina Bangladesh from a past Indian High Commissioner from his own perspectives. Ambassador Saran spoken to a select gathering in Dhaka prior to BD election 2024 clearly favouring Hasina’s retaining Power under Bangladesh system of Democray! Now see the outcomes of her three such elections! What legacy she left behind. A series of mega projects burden with astonomical foreign loans beyond paying capacity, a shattered Administration, Corrupt Police system, worst Human Rights Record, bankrupt Banks, low Foreign Exchange Reserves, a thousand dead bodies, a few thousands bullet hit wounded! High Commissioner rightly said a few millions visit India per year. That's people to people connection but that percrption receding past undet Hasina because India supports her continuation with false & fabricated Elections for the third term. India obtained several corridors over Bangladesh to NE States without any visible solution to Teesta & other Rivers, anti dumping on Jute & jute goods, border killings. Perception in Dhaka Hasina gave up without any reciprocal benefit for Bangladesh just to hang on with Indian support. India needed to understand internal dynamics of change without blaming Nobel Laureate Yunus, Jamat or BNP. Delhi should help stabilise situation for her own longterm positive relationship with Dhaka.
Hindu community in Bangladesh is much better than Muslims in India under BJP. Let it be our internal issue as good as Muslims are India's.
