  • In this video I show how easy it is to install a battery maintainer on your vehicle. It's a great way to keep your battery charged up and ready to go especially in the winter.

    Geez, I had such a dumb question I couldn't get an answer to... and your video solved it for me. I've been using my new maintainer for this past week, with alligator clips, and wanted to install the permanent clips instead. And while I know it's safe to touch the battery, I was nervous about screwing down the nuts once the lead was attached (even with the charger itself not connected). Like, I'd create some electrical arc with me in the middle of it, haha. I don't know this kind of basic stuff and I always have to try to Google search it out. I just knew something bad would happen and the AAA dude I'd have to call to tow my car (once I shorted the whole thing out and recovered from severe burns) would say, "Oh wow, lady, you mean you actually touched the nuts AFTER you had the lead on?!! Didn't you know that created a closed circuit with high voltage?!!" Haha. Anyway, thanks for putting your hands all over that while installing the permanent clips/lead! Answered my question for sure. I just finished putting it on, wove the plug end thru the front grill, and I'm really pleased with myself. I love not having to worry about my little Honda FIT battery dying due to endless short trips and long stretches with no driving. But especially pleased now with the easy come 'n go aspect of this setup... I don't have to pop the hood at all now. Thanks for the video!

    Thanks for this! Owning a little Honda Fit in Fairbanks Alaska has made me very familiar with the issue, and of course, I have battery, block and oil pan heaters already (no garage). Your video is perfect to show my nephew. He's a good sport - he'll take care of his auntie. 😊

    Is it safe to run a battery heating pad and a battery maintainer at the same time. I live in Alaska currently it's -40 and I'm having issues with my battery going dead.. I bought the trickle charger and I winterized my truck completely by myself. Now just wondering if you can run both the pad and charger going to the 4 way??

    where do you put the connectors if you have a 4 post battery?

    • @backcountryrich7740
      @backcountryrich7740  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      If your battery has top and side mounted plus and minus connections or posts just pick the easiest ones for you to connect to and double check your wiring, plus to plus and negative to negative.

    excellent video thank you very much. so i have a question.. i have a duramax diesel, has two batteries can you show us how to hook up a maintainer with two batteries in the vehicle?

    • @backcountryrich7740
      @backcountryrich7740  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks! If your truck is 2-12 volt batteries in parallel (12 volt system) you can connect one 12 volt charger similar to the one I have. Connect positive to positive on the first battery and negative to negative on the second. The charger you buy might need to be more robust than mine since you have 2 batts. Good wiring diagrams online for 2 battery automotive systems. Hope that helps.

      @@backcountryrich7740 so if i only have 1 positive and one negative lead coming out of the charger i could splice into them and add an extra lead to each one? then make the connections in parallel like you mentioned?

    I came to your channel after Dave Whipple recommended it. Dave’s endorsement is all I need to sub. What’s with the cardboard in front of your radiator? Is that a mod for cold weather operation?

    • @backcountryrich7740
      @backcountryrich7740  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey thanks for coming over! Dave is a great friend and I really appreciate his support. Yes that is a "Mod" to block the cold air from the radiator and raise engine temperature in the winter.

      Regarding the air flow mod, I’ve seen tractor-trailers with a fabric cover on the outside of the grill to do the same thing, I guess.

    Are there maintainers that charge while car is running?

    • @backcountryrich7740
      @backcountryrich7740  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Not that I am aware of. When the vehicle is running, your alternator should be charging your battery and supplying power to accessories.

  • @juddedwards
    @juddedwards ปีที่แล้ว

    This is probably a dumb question, but why didn't you just keep the unit external from the car, and then route the quick disconnect cable out? Wouldn't that prevent the need to even route an extension cable in the car, let alone have to figure out mounting of the unit?

    • @backcountryrich7740
      @backcountryrich7740  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I have the truck winterized with an engine block heater, oil pan/transmission heating pad and onboard battery charger. This all ties into the 4 way outlet plug and then a single pigtail sticking out of the front grill to accept a extension cord. That way when I go to work or travel abroad I can plug it in for a couple of hours so it will start in really cold weather. Down to -60F. Hopefully that answered your question. Thanks for watching!

      @@backcountryrich7740I’m think of putting one of these in my car. We’ve had a polar vortex here creating windchills of -45 to -50 (Celsius). Has the maintainer worked ok so far in -50 Fahrenheit? I don’t have a garage either so the onboard maintainer wouldn’t get warmed up much ever.
