когда тебе говорят ни пуха ни пера это значит что тебе желают удачного завершения предстоящего важного для тебя дела (например хорошо сдать экзамен). Вы отвечаете Иди к черту . Это значит вы посылаете трудности (проблемы) этого дела к дьяволу when you are told no fluff or feather it means that the person wishes you a successful completion of the upcoming important business for you (for example, pass the exam well). You say Go to hell . This means you are sending the difficulties (problems) of this case to the devil

It is, though the French:"cauchemar" has itself a double root: Old French "caucher" (tread) and Dutch "mare" (ghost). How those two words came together is anyone's guess!

I wonder, could you provide me with some hint as to the etymology of the word "мерзопакостный" ? It looks rather interesting, this word, (as well as quite a few others :) )
I know that "мерзость" means "abomination". Maybe that is the root?
Indeed, 'мерзость' is 'a disgusting thing, abomination', 'пакость' is also 'a nasty thing', so it's a combination of these two words.
You don't worry, it' a challeng to learn every word.
