Maybe a slight exaggeration. "Down by 50 free throws when Buie had a chance to win with a buzzer beater". At the end of regulation, Purdue was up 33 free throws to 6 free throws - a difference of 27. Almost 50% less than the number Collins is claiming. For those claiming the game was rigged, they either don't understand the fundamentals of basketball or they didn't watch the game. Northwestern made amazing shots time and time again by separating themselves from defenders and finding open looks. You can't draw fouls on open looks. Purdue, on the other hand, had the strategy to work the ball into the paint with the reigning NPOY. The only way to stop him is to play physically and hope you get all ball or get lucky. This strategy has a high risk of fouling, but is the only method that seems to give Purdue any sort of trouble. To claim that free throws should be equal is to also claim that each team plays with the same style - this thought is absolutely ludicrous. Northwestern gave it their all and had an amazing career shooting day in a tough environment. But to complain about unfair officiating just unveils a lack of knowledge of how the game is fundamentally played.
When you foul consistently, it gets called. Northwesterns strategy was to foul and anybody that believes differently has not watched Northwestern play.
@jimmy79889 That was a horrible call. Definitely was a hook and hold. Amazing game, but it shouldn't have been that close. Far to many missed free throws.
You can tell Coach Collins is a little butt hurt over the free throw disparity. I thought Northwestern actually got the benefit of a lot of 50/50 calls, especially in the first half. The truth is though, NW mostly shot jump shots. There weren't very many shots inside of 5 feet that they took. Also, Purdue went inside constantly and drew fouls. They also got fouled after getting offensive rebounds a few times as well. Combine all of that with the inflated free throw stats from the 2 technical foul shots, and fouls NW had late in the game because they had to foul
NW played well and Purdue didn't shoot overly well. The foul total may have been skewed but if officials would ACTUALLY CALL all the fouls that Edy gets it could have been worse. A bump against a guard gets called but Edy gets mugged the majority of the time and very few get called. When I coached soccer I always told the girls to play as aggressively as the officials would let allow. They will let you know the limits of the match. Don't blame the officials because you were being called for being aggressive which they were.
Does Northwestern have a "Fouling' Coach? 31 fouls tonight and 29 at previous game at Northwestern called. That is 60 fouls called for FOULING Purdue players. How many fouls were NOT called. Could there have been a hundred fouls by Northwestern against Purdue?
