Gnossienne No. 1 Cello Version - Erik Satie

  • With four cellos only I created this Gnossienne No. 1 cello version. I think with only strings it brought out even more "airiness" from the piece. Really like the result and happy that I can present it to you today. Haven't seen anyone else do it before with only strings so thought it was time!
The Gnossiennes are several piano compositions written by the French composer Erik Satie in the late 19th century, first published in 1893. The pieces are for the most part in free time, lacking time signatures or bar divisions, and highly experimental with form, rhythm and chordal flow. The name and form was invented by Satie as well.

Hi Julianna! Correct, the First Cello part in the arrangement is what I am playing in the video. The rest of the cellos I recorded beforehand and then played first cello on the camera. I put an asterisk on the arrangement where I think one can improvise a little, hence my slow slide between two notes in one bar at one specific place. But that exact slide is not notated for example. But the rest of the arrangement is basically 99% of what first cello is playing @@juliannatemple-roberts4012

As a big fan of this piece, what I found notable besides the overall beauty, was an impression that I was listening to more Thant one instrument. Also the tempo a tad faster than the one I like the best was refreshing. This is my first exposure to you and your channel, and I am subscribing. What I would like is a very brief introduction to the pieces you are about to play from your perspective as a musician. Thank you and be well.

Hi Naomi, thank you so much for taking your time to write. It’s very kind of you and it’s a joy to read. I have in the past talked before the playing and it has resulted in people skipping but I believe I will bring it back since you and others do enjoy it. The silent just play period has been a good testing phase in the latest videos 🎻

Avec le son des violoncelles, la Gnossienne prend un air plus tragique que lors de son interprétation au piano. Une superbe transcription, bel hommage au compositeur . Bravo !
