    First distress pistol shot of the run. I'd also say the closest you've come to death. If you had fallen through the ice going for that backpack after the wolf attack, that could have been the end. Good job surviving Zak!

    I generally get past the wolves in crumbling highway by getting off the road and sticking to the left-hand side of the map. If you stay near the cliff walls, you rarely encounter the wolves.

    Kinda interesting that the take on surviving in the crumbling highway has changed completely in just a month since this video LOL Beach-combing made it viable, now the fishing hole update made it easy. The coal is interesting you can just move it a bit to the side and it will reset the timer. Next time when you come back it will be there and there will be another one. Useful if you're already very heavy and want to min-max the coal.

    To goat up to the lighthouse, pause the video at 42:11 and look at the left side of the screen. Just below the bridge is a snowy slope, that's where to start and you can work your way up by going around to the left.

    Coal has the best burn time/temperature increase to weight ratio in the game, so it's great for travelling when you want to be able to make a fire in an emergency, but don't want to carry too much unnecessary weight on you. However do keep in mind that you can't use it to start a fire, and can only add it to one that's already burning, so you always want to carry an emergency stick (or some other fuel) on you as well. A book is usually a good choice, since it only weighs half a kilo, gives you the highest fire starting chance bonus (+35%, followed by +15% for a stick and cedar firewood), and you can also read it if you're bored or something...

    That was once again a very interesting episode!
    I haven't really tried beach combing in my own runs, but I have found good loot in a few individual items that washed ashore, like combat pants in a suitcase.
    I guess surviving in Crumbling Highway should be even easier today now that one can place iceholes.

    I don't know if it was a bug, but as I was going through the PV-Winding River cave for the 2nd time after a few weeks, I started picking up coal and sticks, and many of them were just "doubled". I had not picked them up, and another had spawn in the same place/orientation so you could double pick them. All that to say, in current version, you don't need to pick/move coal in cave for it to respawn apparently.

    The main use of crampons is that they increase your climbing speed (by 60 percent according to wiki) by helping you keep you stamina high (since the higher your stamina meter, the faster you climb), so they are of great use in the mountainous areas when you have to go up and down a rope several times in a row, for example, when you're trying to carry all that sweet sweet loot down Timberwolf mountain, and have to carry it down a rope in several batches because of the weight limit. By letting you climb faster, you spend less time time climbing each individual rope, and by result, can climb more ropes before you run out of energy and have to camp in a cave for the night to restore it. Of course, that's assuming you actually use the ropes when going down the mountain :D

    • @Zaknafein
      @Zaknafein  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      They may have changed it, but if you look at the side by side comparison in this video you see they dont increase climbing speed. They may have changed it, though.

    • @zioming
      @zioming ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Zaknafein it's possible, I haven't played LD in a while...
      Edit: Looking at the comparison, your stamina was still more than half full without crampons, so your climbing speed didn't decrease as a result. It would have been different on a longer rope climb (from what I recall) if there's no ledge to rest on. You also didn't wear any cumbersome clothes that limit you max stamina, which might also change the outcome (not sure how that works in this scenario).

    I wonder if there is a chance of breakage under a certain percentage of condition. I was shocked when my 28% hacksaw broke opening a summit crate. Is that a new mechanic or did I just never run into it. So annoying the crate became unaccessible after the hacksaw breaks while opening.

    Still learning this game. Playing on a lower difficulty. Trying to learn the areas, how to hunt, etc. Started a playthrough this month just for that purpose. Was doing fine. Spawned AC, goldmine got bear coat...then to summit and vacationed there awhile enjoying Aurora from the plane...headed to HRV for moose satchel. Stopped in Milton at Home stead. Couldn't find the key. First night slept fine in shed. Second night, all stats up. Clear night, no wind, had read a book, ripped down some cloth. Pushed to sleep. As soon as I slept watched the health bar run out and got the red screen. Ended my run...this game is fickle as heck. Still scratching my head over it. I walked in a blizzard from Dam to the lake cabin and my cold meter didn't budge in driving wind and snow then went to trappers in same blizzard. Just don't get it.

      The temperature can change wildly in any given hour, even if the wind doesn't pick up. Plus, for some reason the sound effect of the blizzards is much much quieter than it used to be, so it's possible one started but you couldn't hear it. Sleeping outdoors is always a risk.

    So this leads me to another question that i think has been touched on but if you could make a better explanation, Why is reclaimed wood so bad? by how much is it worse than an equal weight of sticks, for example? is it about it's "max temperature?" I know that coal can get a fire much hotter, in addition to it's burn time being solid...so maybe reclaimed wood is worse on both variables?

    • @Zaknafein
