  • In today's video we're taking you to the Polynesian Cultural Center, what we personally consider the best thing to do in Hawaii.
Polynesian Cultural Center is located on the North of Oahu, the main Hawaiian island. This is a full day out and then some!
The Polynesian Cultural Center is a tourist attraction that is focused on giving guests a deep dive into the culture of 8 Polynesian islands through simulated villages. You can experience different elements of each of these islands through exhibits, talks and demonstrations as well as activities that you can participate in yourself.
The countries represented in the center are Hawaii, Fiji, Tonga, Samoa, Tahiti, Marquesas Islands and New Zealand, each of these offering an insight into their culture, in New Zealand for instance we saw traditional games and a Haka.
The center also allows you to take a boat through the complex to experience the exhibits from afar, we chose to start by taking the boat from the front to back and then experiencing this way.
Near the front of the complex you have a theatre with a cinema film being shown in an immersive way giving you scenic views of the territory. This film is around 15 minutes long and is on at regular intervals throughout the day. You also have a couple of museums in the complex to show you traditional Hawaiian elements like the Ukulele.
As part of the ticket packages there are many choices, one of which includes a buffet dinner, this is a fantastic value way to eat at the complex, there's nowhere really to get food throughout the main islands so remember to bring snacks and drinks if needed but the buffet at the end of the night is well worth the wait with a huge selection of freshly cooked food, massive seating area and live music.
If you don't buy the buffet package, at the entrance to the complex, before you enter the main islands is a market of sorts where you have small food stands and trucks as well as souvenir stalls with a wide selection, this may be a slightly cheaper option depending on how you feel.
The finale of the day is the stage show, Ha - Breath of Life, this is a highly energetic evening show featuring lights, sounds, fire effects etc. The story takes you through the life of a family from birth to death but told through the traditions of the islands represented.
    Enjoy!

I really enjoyed your video. Thank you for sharing. I'm going in October and curious to know about how long a typical presentation is at the islands. For instance the haku/dance presentation?

Thanks for watching! We hope you have a great time! The presentations can range really, anywhere from 10-30 minutes, I think the Haku went on for around 20 minutes but leave yourself time you may need to be selective in the presentations you see

If I do the Breath of Ha, does also doing a luau (chief’s) make sense? Especially since I’ve been to that luau before but this is my husband’s first time to Hawaii so I’m torn

We really loved the Breath of Ha show, it really brought all of the islands together, we didn’t do the Lu’au but we had one at our resort, if you have enough time and don’t have one to do elsewhere, both may be a good option, sorry that’s not too helpful 😂
