  • TEST STARTS at 4:19 - We test three Tubes: Stock Rode K2, 1960 RCA/Amperex, and a 1966 Mullard/Dumont. We tested each tube with four instruments, male voice, and for noise. This is a sound comparisson video that shows the differences between Mic Tubes when all other conditions remain the same. The seller said the Mullard/Dumont was made in England, but the package and the tube say "Holland" so... Yeah. Maybe it's Holland.
    I purchased the tubes in this review here:

    In my opinion the RCA. The detail and the warmth is unbeatable. Dumont sounds also more detailed than the stock tube. All in all i must admit that the difference is not that big. But the NOS tubes are for sure popular because of their unique sound back in the day. There are surely tubes that are nowadays manufactured that sound also outstanding, but there is something magical with this vintage ones.

    RCA is the ONE, BUT, that MULLARD is so SWEET, WARM and SMOOTH ...and quiet.

    I agree RCA sounds more rich and vibrant. It sounds like it's capturing more subtlety, but the stock and RCA sounded about the same with the male vocals.

    Mullard Dumont for me, but listening over the internet is going to introduce artefacts of its own. The Rode definitely sounds a little muddy compared to the other two.

    RCA for the win on voice

    While I preferred the RCA, it made me wonder if the Dumont might not be preferable in a horn set up to tame ringing and shout?

    Amperex made in Holland before 1959. What did they change?

    Hey, Could you offer some advice. We have new modern Mic with a ECC82 tube. It’s a nice big open sounding mic, but can be harsh from 2.5 right up!
    Is there any tube old or new that may help to soften it ?

    • @yaniv-nos-tubes
      @yaniv-nos-tubes ปีที่แล้ว

      a nos mullard ecc82 will give you less highs and a nice low mid bump without losing clarity

    When You Buy and Put a Tube in to a Rode K2 Or Replace a Tube in Any Microphone ( Do You Have To Burn It in ) i Have Heard You Have to Live it on For 24 to 50 Hr is That True Thanks for the Video

    I hear a very strange undertone when he played the guitar over the Mullard tube. If you listen closely you will hear this slight distorted undertone, I did not like that. The stock tube or the RCA sound best IMO.

    RCA stands out with instruments. Stock is the best for male vocal. Du Mont is uniquely dissimilar to the other two, but I don’t know how to interpret it’s character.

    They pretty much sound the same to my ears. Sounds like the Dumont has the least noise however.

    • @KalaniMusic
      @KalaniMusic  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      rwgamer Yes - My experience of the Dumont is a little more open and smooth sound, also less harshness on the mark tree as compared to the RCA.

    • @joshuamclaughlin9257
      @joshuamclaughlin9257 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      rwgamer the Dumont had resonant nasties with the guitar plus on the first clip. somethings wrong with the internal design
      the RCA makes the guitar sound like a real guitar. the first tube makes the bass notes of the guitar too resonant and bassy. I'm buying the RCA

      You'll have to listen with decent headphones. Headphones under $100 usually don't have the detail and resolution.

    Du Mont all the way.
    There's another alternative, that hasn't been shown here unfortunately: The Amperex Philips made in Netherlands.

    Ok Mr. Das, gloves are only necessary to prevent the lettering on the tube from flaking or rubbing off, unlike halogen auto headlight bulbs that get super hot and can shatter with only the slightest amount of oil from the skin, vacuum tubes, even audio power beam pentodes are not compromised in any way from skin oil other than marring the labeling which can alter their collectible value. AND if your concern is in maintaining the tubes' collectible value NEVER clean them with a "light alcohol and water mixture" because THAT will surely degrade the tubes' labeling and degrade the tubes' collectible value.
    Look, your video is important and tubes are indeed the way to the most organic and life like sound but please get your facts straight before you make such inaccurate comments and give such erroneous advice and care instructions.......Fact check me and learn.

    I expected a recording from an amplifier output while you were playing. What I heard from a microphone was hard to judge. Why did you record an original sound?

  • @ourcollectiveinsanity
    @ourcollectiveinsanity 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think the recorder is the limiting factor here, not much variation or subtle
